1 C uando se decidió que habíamos de navegar para Italia, entregaron a Pablo y a algunos otros presos a un centurión llamado Julio, de la compañía Augusta.

And when it was decided that we should sail to Italy, they delivered Paul and some other prisoners to one named Julius, a centurion of the Augustan Regiment.

2 N os embarcamos en una nave adramitena que iba a tocar los puertos de Asia, y zarpamos. Estaba con nosotros Aristarco, macedonio de Tesalónica.

So, entering a ship of Adramyttium, we put to sea, meaning to sail along the coasts of Asia. Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, was with us.

3 A l otro día llegamos a Sidón; y Julio, tratando humanamente a Pablo, le permitió que fuera a los amigos para ser atendido por ellos.

And the next day we landed at Sidon. And Julius treated Paul kindly and gave him liberty to go to his friends and receive care.

4 Y haciéndonos a la vela desde allí, navegamos a sotavento de Chipre, porque los vientos eran contrarios.

When we had put to sea from there, we sailed under the shelter of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

5 H abiendo atravesado el mar frente a Cilicia y Panfilia, llegamos a Mira, ciudad de Licia.

And when we had sailed over the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.

6 A llí el centurión halló una nave alejandrina que zarpaba para Italia, y nos embarcó en ella.

There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship sailing to Italy, and he put us on board.

7 N avegamos despacio muchos días, y habiendo llegado a duras penas frente a Gnido porque nos lo impedía el viento, navegamos a sotavento de Creta, frente a Salmón.

When we had sailed slowly many days, and arrived with difficulty off Cnidus, the wind not permitting us to proceed, we sailed under the shelter of Crete off Salmone.

8 D espués de costearla con dificultad, llegamos a un lugar que llaman Buenos Puertos, cerca del cual estaba la ciudad de Lasea.

Passing it with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea. Paul’s Warning Ignored

9 C omo habíamos perdido mucho tiempo y era ya peligrosa la navegación por haber pasado ya el ayuno, Pablo los amonestaba,

Now when much time had been spent, and sailing was now dangerous because the Fast was already over, Paul advised them,

10 d iciéndoles: —Veo que la navegación va a ser con perjuicio y mucha pérdida, no sólo del cargamento y de la nave, sino también de nuestras vidas.

saying, “Men, I perceive that this voyage will end with disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives.”

11 P ero el centurión daba más crédito al dueño y al capitán de la nave que a lo que Pablo decía.

Nevertheless the centurion was more persuaded by the helmsman and the owner of the ship than by the things spoken by Paul.

12 Y como el puerto era incómodo para invernar, la mayoría acordó zarpar de allí e intentar llegar a Fenice, puerto de Creta que mira al nordeste y sudeste, e invernar allí. La tempestad en el mar

And because the harbor was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised to set sail from there also, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of Crete opening toward the southwest and northwest, and winter there. In the Tempest

13 Y como comenzó a soplar una brisa del sur, les pareció que podían continuar el viaje. Entonces levaron anclas y fueron costeando Creta.

When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their desire, putting out to sea, they sailed close by Crete.

14 P ero no mucho después dio contra la nave un viento huracanado llamado Euroclidón.

But not long after, a tempestuous head wind arose, called Euroclydon.

15 L a nave era arrastrada, y al no poder poner proa al viento, nos abandonamos a él y nos dejamos llevar.

So when the ship was caught, and could not head into the wind, we let her drive.

16 D espués de pasar a sotavento de una pequeña isla llamada Clauda, con dificultad pudimos recoger el esquife.

And running under the shelter of an island called Clauda, we secured the skiff with difficulty.

17 U na vez subido a bordo, usaron de refuerzos para asegurar las amarras de la nave; y por temor de dar en la Sirte, arriaron las velas y quedaron a la deriva.

When they had taken it on board, they used cables to undergird the ship; and fearing lest they should run aground on the Syrtis Sands, they struck sail and so were driven.

18 P ero siendo combatidos por una furiosa tempestad, al siguiente día empezaron a deshacerse de la carga,

And because we were exceedingly tempest-tossed, the next day they lightened the ship.

19 y al tercer día con nuestras propias manos arrojamos los aparejos de la nave.

On the third day we threw the ship’s tackle overboard with our own hands.

20 A l no aparecer ni sol ni estrellas por muchos días, y acosados por una tempestad no pequeña, ya habíamos perdido toda esperanza de salvarnos.

Now when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest beat on us, all hope that we would be saved was finally given up.

21 E ntonces Pablo, como hacía ya mucho que no comíamos, puesto en pie en medio de ellos, dijo: —Habría sido por cierto conveniente haberme oído, y no zarpar de Creta tan sólo para recibir este perjuicio y pérdida.

But after long abstinence from food, then Paul stood in the midst of them and said, “Men, you should have listened to me, and not have sailed from Crete and incurred this disaster and loss.

22 P ero ahora os exhorto a tener buen ánimo, pues no habrá ninguna pérdida de vida entre vosotros, sino solamente de la nave,

And now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.

23 p ues esta noche ha estado conmigo el ángel del Dios de quien soy y a quien sirvo,

For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve,

24 y me ha dicho: “Pablo, no temas; es necesario que comparezcas ante César; además, Dios te ha concedido todos los que navegan contigo.”

saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.’

25 P or tanto, tened buen ánimo, porque yo confío en Dios que será así como se me ha dicho.

Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me.

26 C on todo, es necesario que demos en alguna isla.

However, we must run aground on a certain island.”

27 A l llegar la decimacuarta noche, y siendo llevados a través del mar Adriático, a la medianoche los marineros sospecharon que estaban cerca de tierra.

Now when the fourteenth night had come, as we were driven up and down in the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors sensed that they were drawing near some land.

28 E charon la sonda y hallaron veinte brazas; y pasando un poco más adelante, volvieron a echar la sonda y hallaron quince brazas.

And they took soundings and found it to be twenty fathoms; and when they had gone a little farther, they took soundings again and found it to be fifteen fathoms.

29 T emiendo dar en escollos, echaron cuatro anclas por la popa, y ansiaban que se hiciera de día.

Then, fearing lest we should run aground on the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern, and prayed for day to come.

30 E ntonces los marineros procuraron huir de la nave, y echando el esquife al mar aparentaban como que querían largar las anclas de proa.

And as the sailors were seeking to escape from the ship, when they had let down the skiff into the sea, under pretense of putting out anchors from the prow,

31 P ero Pablo dijo al centurión y a los soldados: —Si estos no permanecen en la nave, vosotros no podéis salvaros.

Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, “Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.”

32 E ntonces los soldados cortaron las amarras del esquife y lo dejaron perderse.

Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the skiff and let it fall off.

33 C uando comenzó a amanecer, Pablo exhortaba a todos que comieran, diciendo: —Éste es el decimocuarto día que veláis y permanecéis en ayunas, sin comer nada.

And as day was about to dawn, Paul implored them all to take food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day you have waited and continued without food, and eaten nothing.

34 P or tanto, os ruego que comáis por vuestra salud, pues ni aun un cabello de la cabeza de ninguno de vosotros perecerá.

Therefore I urge you to take nourishment, for this is for your survival, since not a hair will fall from the head of any of you.”

35 Y dicho esto, tomó el pan y dio gracias a Dios en presencia de todos, lo partió y comenzó a comer.

And when he had said these things, he took bread and gave thanks to God in the presence of them all; and when he had broken it he began to eat.

36 E ntonces todos, teniendo ya mejor ánimo, comieron también.

Then they were all encouraged, and also took food themselves.

37 Y éramos todas las personas en la nave doscientas setenta y seis.

And in all we were two hundred and seventy-six persons on the ship.

38 U na vez satisfechos, aligeraron la nave echando el trigo al mar. El naufragio

So when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship and threw out the wheat into the sea. Shipwrecked on Malta

39 C uando se hizo de día, no reconocieron el lugar, pero vieron una ensenada que tenía playa, en la cual acordaron varar la nave, si podían.

When it was day, they did not recognize the land; but they observed a bay with a beach, onto which they planned to run the ship if possible.

40 C ortaron, pues, las anclas y las dejaron en el mar; aflojaron también las amarras del timón, izaron al viento la vela de proa y enfilaron hacia la playa.

And they let go the anchors and left them in the sea, meanwhile loosing the rudder ropes; and they hoisted the mainsail to the wind and made for shore.

41 P ero, dando en un lugar de dos aguas, hicieron encallar la nave. La proa, hincada, quedó inmóvil, y la popa se abría con la violencia del mar.

But striking a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the prow stuck fast and remained immovable, but the stern was being broken up by the violence of the waves.

42 E ntonces los soldados acordaron matar a los presos, para que ninguno se fugara nadando.

And the soldiers’ plan was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim away and escape.

43 P ero el centurión, queriendo salvar a Pablo, les impidió este intento, y mandó que los que supieran nadar se arrojaran al agua primero y salieran a tierra;

But the centurion, wanting to save Paul, kept them from their purpose, and commanded that those who could swim should jump overboard first and get to land,

44 y los demás, parte en tablas, parte en cosas de la nave. Y así aconteció que todos se salvaron saliendo a tierra.

and the rest, some on boards and some on parts of the ship. And so it was that they all escaped safely to land.
