1 J ehová se dirigió por segunda vez a Jonás y le dijo:

Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying,

2 « Levántate y ve a Nínive, aquella gran ciudad, y proclama en ella el mensaje que yo te diré.»

“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.”

3 J onás se levantó y fue a Nínive, conforme a la palabra de Jehová. Nínive era una ciudad tan grande, tanto que eran necesarios tres días para recorrerla.

So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day journey in extent.

4 C omenzó Jonás a adentrarse en la ciudad, y caminó todo un día predicando y diciendo: «¡Dentro de cuarenta días Nínive será destruida!»

And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. Then he cried out and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” The People of Nineveh Believe

5 L os hombres de Nínive creyeron a Dios, proclamaron ayuno y, desde el mayor hasta el más pequeño, se vistieron con ropas ásperas.

So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.

6 C uando la noticia llegó al rey de Nínive, éste se levantó de su silla, se despojó de su vestido, se cubrió con ropas ásperas y se sentó sobre ceniza.

Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes.

7 L uego hizo anunciar en Nínive, por mandato del rey y de sus grandes, una proclama que decía: «Hombres y animales, bueyes y ovejas, no prueben cosa alguna; no se les dé alimento ni beban agua,

And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water.

8 s ino cúbranse hombres y animales con ropas ásperas, y clamen a Dios con fuerza. Que cada uno se convierta de su mal camino y de la violencia que hay en sus manos.

But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.

9 ¡ Quizá Dios se detenga y se arrepienta, se calme el ardor de su ira y no perezcamos!»

Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish?

10 V io Dios lo que hicieron, que se convirtieron de su mal camino, y se arrepintió del mal que había anunciado hacerles, y no lo hizo.

Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.
