1 ¿ De dónde vienen las guerras y los pleitos entre vosotros? ¿No es de vuestras pasiones, las cuales combaten en vuestros miembros?

Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?

2 C odiciáis y no tenéis; matáis y ardéis de envidia y nada podéis alcanzar; combatís y lucháis, pero no tenéis lo que deseáis, porque no pedís.

You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.

3 P edís, pero no recibís, porque pedís mal, para gastar en vuestros deleites.

You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

4 ¡ Adúlteros!, ¿no sabéis que la amistad del mundo es enemistad contra Dios? Cualquiera, pues, que quiera ser amigo del mundo se constituye en enemigo de Dios.

Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

5 ¿ O pensáis que la Escritura dice en vano: «El Espíritu que él ha hecho habitar en nosotros nos anhela celosamente»?

Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?

6 P ero él da mayor gracia. Por esto dice: «Dios resiste a los soberbios y da gracia a los humildes.»

But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Humility Cures Worldliness

7 S ometeos, pues, a Dios; resistid al diablo, y huirá de vosotros.

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

8 A cercaos a Dios, y él se acercará a vosotros. Pecadores, limpiad las manos; y vosotros los de doble ánimo, purificad vuestros corazones.

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

9 A fligíos, lamentad y llorad. Vuestra risa se convierta en lloro y vuestro gozo en tristeza.

Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.

10 H umillaos delante del Señor y él os exaltará. ¿Quién eres para que juzgues?

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. Do Not Judge a Brother

11 H ermanos, no murmuréis los unos de los otros. El que murmura del hermano y juzga a su hermano, murmura de la Ley y juzga a la Ley; pero si tú juzgas a la Ley, no eres hacedor de la Ley, sino juez.

Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.

12 U no solo es el dador de la Ley, que puede salvar y condenar; pero tú, ¿quién eres para que juzgues a otro? No os gloriéis del día de mañana

There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another? Do Not Boast About Tomorrow

13 ¡ Vamos ahora!, los que decís: «Hoy y mañana iremos a tal ciudad, estaremos allá un año, negociaremos y ganaremos»,

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”;

14 c uando no sabéis lo que será mañana. Pues ¿qué es vuestra vida? Ciertamente es neblina que se aparece por un poco de tiempo y luego se desvanece.

whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

15 E n lugar de lo cual deberíais decir: «Si el Señor quiere, viviremos y haremos esto o aquello.»

Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”

16 P ero ahora os jactáis en vuestras soberbias. Toda jactancia semejante es mala.

But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.

17 E l que sabe hacer lo bueno y no lo hace, comete pecado.

Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
