1 H abía un hombre de Benjamín, hombre valeroso, el cual se llamaba Cis hijo de Abiel hijo de Zeror, hijo de Becorat, hijo de Afía, hijo de un benjaminita.

There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.

2 T enía él un hijo que se llamaba Saúl, joven y hermoso. Entre los hijos de Israel no había otro más hermoso que él; de hombros arriba sobrepasaba a cualquiera del pueblo.

And he had a choice and handsome son whose name was Saul. There was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.

3 U n día se perdieron las asnas de Cis, padre de Saúl; por lo que dijo Cis a su hijo Saúl: «Toma ahora contigo alguno de los criados, levántate y ve a buscar las asnas.»

Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. And Kish said to his son Saul, “Please take one of the servants with you, and arise, go and look for the donkeys.”

4 Y él atravesó los montes de Efraín, y de allí pasó a la tierra de Salisa, y no las hallaron. Pasaron luego por la tierra de Saalim, y tampoco. Después pasaron por la tierra de Benjamín, y no las encontraron.

So he passed through the mountains of Ephraim and through the land of Shalisha, but they did not find them. Then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and they were not there. Then he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they did not find them.

5 C uando vinieron a la tierra de Zuf, Saúl dijo al criado que tenía consigo: —Ven, volvámonos; porque quizá mi padre haya olvidado la preocupación por las asnas y esté intranquilo por nosotros.

When they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come, let us return, lest my father cease caring about the donkeys and become worried about us.”

6 É l le respondió: —En esta ciudad hay un varón de Dios; es un hombre muy respetado: todo lo que él dice acontece sin falta. Vamos, pues, allá; quizá nos dará algún indicio acerca del objeto por el cual emprendimos nuestro camino.

And he said to him, “Look now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honorable man; all that he says surely comes to pass. So let us go there; perhaps he can show us the way that we should go.”

7 R espondió Saúl a su criado: —Vamos ahora; pero ¿qué llevaremos a ese hombre? Porque el pan de nuestras alforjas se ha acabado, y no tenemos qué ofrecerle al varón de Dios. ¿Qué le podemos dar?

Then Saul said to his servant, “But look, if we go, what shall we bring the man? For the bread in our vessels is all gone, and there is no present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”

8 E ntonces replicó el criado y dijo a Saúl: —Mira, tengo aquí en mi mano la cuarta parte de un siclo de plata; se lo daré al varón de Dios, para que nos indique el camino.

And the servant answered Saul again and said, “Look, I have here at hand one-fourth of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.”

9 ( Antiguamente en Israel cualquiera que iba a consultar a Dios, decía: «Venid y vamos al vidente»; porque al que hoy se llama profeta, entonces se le llamaba vidente.)

(Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he spoke thus: “Come, let us go to the seer”; for he who is now called a prophet was formerly called a seer.)

10 D ijo entonces Saúl a su criado: —Dices bien; anda, vamos. Y se fueron a la ciudad donde estaba el varón de Dios.

Then Saul said to his servant, “Well said; come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.

11 C uando subían por la cuesta de la ciudad, hallaron unas jóvenes que salían por agua, a las cuales dijeron: —¿Está en este lugar el vidente?

As they went up the hill to the city, they met some young women going out to draw water, and said to them, “Is the seer here?”

12 E llas les respondieron: —Sí; aquí está. Daos prisa pues precisamente ha venido a la ciudad en atención a que el pueblo tiene hoy un sacrificio en el lugar alto.

And they answered them and said, “Yes, there he is, just ahead of you. Hurry now; for today he came to this city, because there is a sacrifice of the people today on the high place.

13 E n cuanto entréis en la ciudad, buscadlo, antes que suba al lugar alto a comer; pues el pueblo no comerá hasta que él haya llegado, por cuanto él es el que bendice el sacrificio; después de esto comen los convidados. Subid, pues, ahora, porque ahora lo hallaréis.

As soon as you come into the city, you will surely find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat until he comes, because he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Now therefore, go up, for about this time you will find him.”

14 E llos subieron entonces a la ciudad; y cuando estaban en medio de ella, vieron a Samuel que venía hacia ellos para subir al lugar alto.

So they went up to the city. As they were coming into the city, there was Samuel, coming out toward them on his way up to the high place.

15 U n día antes de la llegada de Saúl, Jehová había hecho a Samuel esta revelación:

Now the Lord had told Samuel in his ear the day before Saul came, saying,

16 « Mañana a esta misma hora yo enviaré a ti un hombre de la tierra de Benjamín, al cual ungirás como príncipe sobre mi pueblo Israel, y él salvará a mi pueblo de manos de los filisteos; porque yo he visto la aflicción de mi pueblo, y su clamor ha llegado hasta mí.»

“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him commander over My people Israel, that he may save My people from the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked upon My people, because their cry has come to Me.”

17 C uando Samuel vio a Saúl, Jehová le dijo: «Éste es el hombre del cual te hablé; él gobernará a mi pueblo.»

So when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said to him, “There he is, the man of whom I spoke to you. This one shall reign over My people.”

18 A cercándose, pues, Saúl a Samuel en medio de la puerta, le dijo: —Te ruego que me enseñes dónde está la casa del vidente.

Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, “Please tell me, where is the seer’s house?”

19 S amuel respondió a Saúl: —Yo soy el vidente; sube delante de mí al lugar alto, y come hoy conmigo. Mañana por la mañana te despediré y te descubriré todo lo que hay en tu corazón.

Samuel answered Saul and said, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today; and tomorrow I will let you go and will tell you all that is in your heart.

20 E n cuanto a las asnas que se te perdieron hace ya tres días, pierde cuidado de ellas, porque han sido halladas. Además, ¿para quién es todo lo que hay de codiciable en Israel, sino para ti y para toda la casa de tu padre?

But as for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not be anxious about them, for they have been found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on you and on all your father’s house?”

21 S aúl respondió y dijo: —¿No soy yo hijo de Benjamín, de la más pequeña de las tribus de Israel? Y mi familia ¿no es la más pequeña de todas las familias de la tribu de Benjamín? ¿Por qué, pues, me has dicho cosa semejante?

And Saul answered and said, “ Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak like this to me?”

22 E ntonces Samuel tomó a Saúl y a su criado, los introdujo a la sala y les dio un lugar a la cabecera de los convidados, que eran unos treinta hombres.

Now Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the hall, and had them sit in the place of honor among those who were invited; there were about thirty persons.

23 D espués dijo Samuel al cocinero: —Trae acá la porción que te di, la que te dije que guardaras aparte.

And Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it apart.’”

24 E ntonces alzó el cocinero una espaldilla, con lo que estaba sobre ella, y la puso delante de Saúl. Y Samuel dijo: —Aquí tienes lo que estaba reservado; ponlo delante de ti y come, porque para esta ocasión se te guardó, cuando dije: “Yo he convidado al pueblo.” Saúl comió aquel día con Samuel.

So the cook took up the thigh with its upper part and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, “Here it is, what was kept back. It was set apart for you. Eat; for until this time it has been kept for you, since I said I invited the people.” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

25 C uando hubieron descendido del lugar alto a la ciudad, él habló con Saúl en la azotea.

When they had come down from the high place into the city, Samuel spoke with Saul on the top of the house.

26 A l otro día madrugaron; al despuntar el alba, Samuel llamó a Saúl, el cual estaba en la azotea, y le dijo: —Levántate, para que te despida. Luego se levantó Saúl, y salieron ambos, él y Samuel.

They arose early; and it was about the dawning of the day that Samuel called to Saul on the top of the house, saying, “Get up, that I may send you on your way.” And Saul arose, and both of them went outside, he and Samuel. Saul Anointed King

27 H abían descendido al extremo de la ciudad, cuando Samuel dijo a Saúl: —Di al criado que se adelante —y se adelantó el criado—, pero espera tú un poco para que te declare la palabra de Dios.

As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us.” And he went on. “But you stand here awhile, that I may announce to you the word of God.”
