1 E l hambre era grande en la tierra;

Now the famine was severe in the land.

2 y aconteció que cuando acabaron de consumir el trigo que trajeron de Egipto, les dijo su padre: —Volved y comprad para nosotros un poco de alimento.

And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, “Go back, buy us a little food.”

3 R espondió Judá: —Aquel hombre nos advirtió con ánimo resuelto: “No veréis mi rostro si no traéis a vuestro hermano con vosotros.”

But Judah spoke to him, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’

4 S i envías a nuestro hermano con nosotros, descenderemos y te compraremos alimento.

If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.

5 P ero si no lo envías, no descenderemos, porque aquel hombre nos dijo: “No veréis mi rostro si no traéis a vuestro hermano con vosotros.”

But if you will not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’”

6 D ijo entonces Israel: —¿Por qué me hicisteis tanto mal, declarando a ese hombre que teníais otro hermano?

And Israel said, “Why did you deal so wrongfully with me as to tell the man whether you had still another brother?”

7 E llos respondieron: —Aquel hombre nos preguntó expresamente por nosotros y por nuestra familia, diciendo: “¿Vive aún vuestro padre? ¿Tenéis otro hermano?” Y le declaramos conforme a estas palabras. ¿Acaso podíamos saber que él nos diría: “Haced venir a vuestro hermano”?

But they said, “The man asked us pointedly about ourselves and our family, saying, ‘ Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ And we told him according to these words. Could we possibly have known that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?”

8 E ntonces Judá dijo a su padre Israel: —Envía al joven conmigo; nos levantaremos e iremos enseguida, a fin de que vivamos y no muramos, ni nosotros, ni tú, ni nuestros niños.

Then Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, both we and you and also our little ones.

9 Y o te respondo por él; a mí me pedirás cuenta. Si no te lo traigo de vuelta y no lo pongo delante de ti, seré ante ti el culpable para siempre.

I myself will be surety for him; from my hand you shall require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever.

10 S i no nos hubiéramos demorado, ciertamente hubiéramos ya ido y vuelto dos veces.

For if we had not lingered, surely by now we would have returned this second time.”

11 E ntonces su padre Israel les respondió: —Pues que así es, hacedlo; tomad de lo mejor de la tierra en vuestros sacos y llevad a aquel hombre un regalo, un poco de bálsamo, un poco de miel, aromas y mirra, nueces y almendras.

And their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: Take some of the best fruits of the land in your vessels and carry down a present for the man—a little balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.

12 T omad también en vuestras manos doble cantidad de dinero, y llevad así en vuestras manos el dinero devuelto en las bocas de vuestros costales; quizá fue equivocación.

Take double money in your hand, and take back in your hand the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks; perhaps it was an oversight.

13 A simismo, tomad a vuestro hermano, levantaos y volved a aquel hombre.

Take your brother also, and arise, go back to the man.

14 Q ue el Dios omnipotente haga que ese hombre tenga misericordia de vosotros, y os suelte al otro hermano vuestro y a este Benjamín. Y si he de ser privado de mis hijos, que lo sea.

And may God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved, I am bereaved!”

15 E ntonces tomaron aquellos hombres el regalo, y tomaron en sus manos el doble del dinero, así como a Benjamín, y se levantaron, descendieron a Egipto y se presentaron delante de José.

So the men took that present and Benjamin, and they took double money in their hand, and arose and went down to Egypt; and they stood before Joseph.

16 J osé vio con ellos a Benjamín, y dijo al mayordomo de su casa: —Lleva a casa a esos hombres, y degüella una res y prepárala, pues estos hombres comerán conmigo al mediodía.

When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Take these men to my home, and slaughter an animal and make ready; for these men will dine with me at noon.”

17 H izo el hombre como José había dicho, y llevó a los hombres a casa de José.

Then the man did as Joseph ordered, and the man brought the men into Joseph’s house.

18 E ntonces aquellos hombres tuvieron temor, porque los llevaban a casa de José. Se decían: —Por el dinero que fue devuelto en nuestros costales la primera vez, nos han traído aquí; para tendernos lazo, atacarnos y tomarnos por siervos a nosotros y a nuestros asnos.

Now the men were afraid because they were brought into Joseph’s house; and they said, “ It is because of the money, which was returned in our sacks the first time, that we are brought in, so that he may make a case against us and seize us, to take us as slaves with our donkeys.”

19 S e acercaron, pues, al mayordomo de la casa de José, y le hablaron a la entrada de la casa.

When they drew near to the steward of Joseph’s house, they talked with him at the door of the house,

20 L e dijeron: —¡Ay, señor nuestro! Nosotros, en realidad de verdad, descendimos al principio a comprar alimentos.

and said, “O sir, we indeed came down the first time to buy food;

21 Y aconteció que cuando llegamos al mesón y abrimos nuestros costales, vimos que el dinero de cada uno estaba en la boca de su costal, nuestro dinero en su justo peso; y lo hemos vuelto a traer con nosotros.

but it happened, when we came to the encampment, that we opened our sacks, and there, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; so we have brought it back in our hand.

22 H emos traído también en nuestras manos otro dinero para comprar alimentos. Nosotros no sabemos quién haya puesto nuestro dinero en nuestros costales.

And we have brought down other money in our hands to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.”

23 É l les respondió: —Paz a vosotros, no temáis. Vuestro Dios y el Dios de vuestro padre os puso ese tesoro en vuestros costales; yo recibí vuestro dinero. Y les sacó a Simeón.

But he said, “Peace be with you, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.

24 L uego llevó aquel varón a los hombres a casa de José; les dio agua y lavaron sus pies, y dio de comer a sus asnos.

So the man brought the men into Joseph’s house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their donkeys feed.

25 E llos prepararon el regalo mientras venía José a mediodía, pues oyeron que habrían de comer allí.

Then they made the present ready for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they would eat bread there.

26 A l entrar José en casa, ellos le trajeron el regalo que habían traído consigo, y se inclinaron ante él hasta tocar la tierra.

And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed down before him to the earth.

27 E ntonces les preguntó José cómo estaban, y les dijo: —¿Vuestro padre, el anciano que dijisteis, lo pasa bien? ¿Vive todavía?

Then he asked them about their well-being, and said, “ Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?”

28 E llos respondieron: —Tu siervo, nuestro padre, está bien; aún vive. Y se inclinaron e hicieron reverencia.

And they answered, “Your servant our father is in good health; he is still alive.” And they bowed their heads down and prostrated themselves.

29 A lzó José sus ojos y vio a su hermano Benjamín, hijo de su madre, y dijo: —¿Es éste vuestro hermano menor, de quien me hablasteis? Y añadió: —Dios tenga misericordia de ti, hijo mío.

Then he lifted his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, “ Is this your younger brother of whom you spoke to me?” And he said, “God be gracious to you, my son.”

30 E ntonces José se apresuró, porque se conmovieron sus entrañas a causa de su hermano, y buscó dónde llorar; entró en su habitación y lloró allí.

Now his heart yearned for his brother; so Joseph made haste and sought somewhere to weep. And he went into his chamber and wept there.

31 C uando pudo contener el llanto, lavó su rostro, salió y dijo: «Servid la comida.»

Then he washed his face and came out; and he restrained himself, and said, “Serve the bread.”

32 S irvieron para él aparte, y separadamente para ellos, y aparte para los egipcios que con él comían, porque los egipcios no pueden comer pan con los hebreos, lo cual es abominación para los egipcios.

So they set him a place by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat food with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.

33 Y se sentaron delante de él, el mayor conforme a su primogenitura, y el menor conforme a su menor edad; y estaban aquellos hombres atónitos mirándose el uno al otro.

And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth; and the men looked in astonishment at one another.

34 J osé tomó viandas de delante de sí para ellos; pero la porción de Benjamín era cinco veces mayor que la de cualquiera de los demás. Y bebieron y se alegraron con él.

Then he took servings to them from before him, but Benjamin’s serving was five times as much as any of theirs. So they drank and were merry with him.
