1 J acob lived in the land of his father’s travels, in the land of Canaan.

2 T his is the history of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s wives. Joseph brought an evil report of them to their father.

3 N ow Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a coat of many colors.

Israel amaba a José más que a todos sus hijos, porque era para él el hijo de su vejez; y le hizo una túnica de muchos colores.

4 H is brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and couldn’t speak peaceably to him.

Y sus hermanos vieron que su padre amaba más a José que a todos ellos; por eso lo odiaban y no podían hablarle amistosamente. Sueños de José

5 J oseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him all the more.

José tuvo un sueño y cuando se lo contó a sus hermanos, ellos lo odiaron aún más.

6 H e said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:

Y él les dijo: “Les ruego que escuchen este sueño que he tenido.

7 f or behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves came around, and bowed down to my sheaf.”

Estábamos atando gavillas en medio del campo, y sucedió que mi gavilla se levantó y se puso derecha, y entonces las gavillas de ustedes se ponían alrededor y se inclinaban hacia mi gavilla.”

8 H is brothers said to him, “Will you indeed reign over us? Or will you indeed have dominion over us?” They hated him all the more for his dreams and for his words.

Y sus hermanos le dijeron: “¿Acaso reinarás sobre nosotros? ¿O acaso te enseñorearás sobre nosotros ?” Y lo odiaron aún más por causa de sus sueños y de sus palabras.

9 H e dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamed yet another dream: and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.”

José tuvo también otro sueño, y se lo contó a sus hermanos, diciendo: “He tenido otro sueño; y el sol, la luna y once estrellas se inclinaban ante mí.”

10 H e told it to his father and to his brothers. His father rebuked him, and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves down to you to the earth?”

Cuando se lo contó a su padre y a sus hermanos, su padre lo reprendió, y le dijo: “¿Qué es este sueño que has tenido ? ¿Acaso yo, tu madre y tus hermanos vendremos a inclinarnos hasta el suelo ante ti ?”

11 H is brothers envied him, but his father kept this saying in mind.

12 H is brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem.

Después sus hermanos fueron a apacentar el rebaño de su padre en Siquem.

13 I srael said to Joseph, “Aren’t your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.” He said to him, “Here I am.”

Israel dijo a José: “¿No están tus hermanos apacentando el rebaño en Siquem ? Ven, y te voy a enviar a ellos.” “Iré,” le dijo José.

14 H e said to him, “Go now, see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flock; and bring me word again.” So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

Entonces Israel le dijo: “Ve ahora y mira cómo están tus hermanos y cómo está el rebaño, y tráeme noticias de ellos.” Lo envió, pues, desde el Valle de Hebrón, y José fue a Siquem.

15 A certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field. The man asked him, “What are you looking for?”

Estando él dando vueltas por el campo, un hombre lo encontró, y el hombre le preguntó: “¿Qué buscas?”

16 H e said, “I am looking for my brothers. Tell me, please, where they are feeding the flock.”

“Busco a mis hermanos,” respondió José; “le ruego que me informe dónde están apacentando el rebaño.”

17 T he man said, “They have left here, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.

“Se han ido de aquí,” le contestó el hombre, “pues yo les oí decir: ‘Vamos a Dotán.’” Entonces José fue tras sus hermanos y los encontró en Dotán. Complot de los Hermanos de José

18 T hey saw him afar off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.

Cuando ellos lo vieron de lejos, y antes que se les acercara, tramaron contra él para matarlo.

19 T hey said to one another, “Behold, this dreamer comes.

Y se dijeron unos a otros: “Aquí viene el soñador.

20 C ome now therefore, and let’s kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, ‘An evil animal has devoured him.’ We will see what will become of his dreams.”

Ahora pues, vengan, matémoslo y arrojémoslo a uno de los pozos; y diremos: ‘Una fiera lo devoró.’ Entonces veremos en qué quedan sus sueños.”

21 R euben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, “Let’s not take his life.”

Pero Rubén oyó esto y lo libró de sus manos, y dijo: “No le quitemos la vida.”

22 R euben said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.

Rubén les dijo además: “No derramen sangre. Echenlo en este pozo del desierto, pero no le pongan la mano encima.” Esto dijo para poder librarlo de las manos de ellos y devolverlo a su padre.

23 W hen Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colors that was on him;

Y cuando José llegó a sus hermanos, lo despojaron de su túnica, la túnica de muchos colores que llevaba puesta.

24 a nd they took him, and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty. There was no water in it.

25 T hey sat down to eat bread, and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

Entonces se sentaron a comer, y cuando levantaron los ojos, vieron una caravana de Ismaelitas que venía de Galaad con sus camellos cargados de resina aromática, bálsamo y mirra, e iban bajando hacia Egipto.

26 J udah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?

Y Judá dijo a sus hermanos: “¿Qué ganaremos con matar a nuestro hermano y ocultar su sangre ?

27 C ome, and let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh.” His brothers listened to him.

Vengan, vendámoslo a los Ismaelitas y no pongamos las manos sobre él, pues es nuestro hermano, carne nuestra.” Y sus hermanos le hicieron caso.

28 M idianites who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. They brought Joseph into Egypt.

Pasaron entonces los mercaderes Madianitas, y ellos sacaron a José, subiéndolo del pozo, y vendieron a José a los Ismaelitas por veinte monedas de plata. Y éstos se llevaron a José a Egipto. Jacob Llora a José

29 R euben returned to the pit; and saw that Joseph wasn’t in the pit; and he tore his clothes.

Cuando Rubén volvió al pozo, José ya no estaba en el pozo. Entonces rasgó sus vestidos;

30 H e returned to his brothers, and said, “The child is no more; and I, where will I go?”

y volvió a sus hermanos y les dijo: “El muchacho no está allí; y yo, ¿adónde iré ?”

31 T hey took Joseph’s coat, and killed a male goat, and dipped the coat in the blood.

Así que tomaron la túnica de José, mataron un macho cabrío, y empaparon la túnica en la sangre.

32 T hey took the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, “We have found this. Examine it, now, whether it is your son’s coat or not.”

Entonces enviaron la túnica de muchos colores y la llevaron a su padre, y dijeron: “Encontramos esto. Te rogamos que lo examines para ver si es la túnica de tu hijo o no.”

33 H e recognized it, and said, “It is my son’s coat. An evil animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.”

El la examinó, y dijo: “Es la túnica de mi hijo. Una fiera lo ha devorado. Sin duda José ha sido despedazado.”

34 J acob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days.

Jacob rasgó sus vestidos, puso cilicio sobre sus lomos y estuvo de duelo por su hijo muchos días.

35 A ll his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. He said, “For I will go down to Sheol to my son mourning.” His father wept for him.

Todos sus hijos y todas sus hijas vinieron para consolarlo, pero él rehusó ser consolado, y dijo: “Ciertamente enlutado bajaré al Seol (región de los muertos) por causa de mi hijo.” Y su padre lloró por él.

36 T he Midianites sold him into Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard.

Mientras tanto, los Madianitas lo vendieron en Egipto a Potifar, oficial de Faraón, capitán de la guardia.
