1 ¶ Forasmuch as many have attempted to set forth in order the history of those things which among us have been most certain,

2 e ven as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning taught us and thus were ministers of the word,

conforme nos foram transmitidos por aqueles que desde o início foram testemunhas oculares e servos da palavra.

3 i t seemed good also to me, after having understood all the things from the beginning with great diligence, to write them unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

Eu mesmo investiguei tudo cuidadosamente, desde o começo, e decidi escrever-te um relato ordenado, ó excelentíssimo Teófilo,

4 t hat thou mightest know the security of those things in which thou hast been instructed.

para que tenhas a certeza das coisas que te foram ensinadas. O Nascimento de João Batista é Predito

5 ¶ There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia, and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

No tempo de Herodes, rei da Judéia, havia um sacerdote chamado Zacarias, que pertencia ao grupo sacerdotal de Abias; Isabel, sua mulher, também era descendente de Arão.

6 A nd they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord, blameless.

Ambos eram justos aos olhos de Deus, obedecendo de modo irrepreensível a todos os mandamentos e preceitos do Senhor.

7 A nd they had no child because Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well advanced in years.

Mas eles não tinham filhos, porque Isabel era estéril; e ambos eram de idade avançada.

8 A nd it came to pass that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,

Certa vez, estando de serviço o seu grupo, Zacarias estava servindo como sacerdote diante de Deus.

9 a ccording to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense entering into the temple of the Lord.

Ele foi escolhido por sorteio, de acordo com o costume do sacerdócio, para entrar no santuário do Senhor e oferecer incenso.

10 A nd the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the time of incense.

Chegando a hora de oferecer incenso, o povo todo estava orando do lado de fora.

11 A nd there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

Então um anjo do Senhor apareceu a Zacarias, à direita do altar do incenso.

12 A nd when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

Quando Zacarias o viu, perturbou-se e foi dominado pelo medo.

13 B ut the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

Mas o anjo lhe disse: “Não tenha medo, Zacarias; sua oração foi ouvida. Isabel, sua mulher, lhe dará um filho, e você lhe dará o nome de João.

14 A nd thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

Ele será motivo de prazer e de alegria para você, e muitos se alegrarão por causa do nascimento dele,

15 F or he shall be great in the sight of the Lord and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

pois será grande aos olhos do Senhor. Ele nunca tomará vinho nem bebida fermentada, e será cheio do Espírito Santo desde antes do seu nascimento.

16 A nd he shall turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God.

Fará retornar muitos dentre o povo de Israel ao Senhor, o seu Deus.

17 A nd he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the rebellious to the prudence of the just, to make ready a prepared people for the Lord.

E irá adiante do Senhor, no espírito e no poder de Elias, para fazer voltar o coração dos pais a seus filhos e os desobedientes à sabedoria dos justos, para deixar um povo preparado para o Senhor”.

18 A nd Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.

Zacarias perguntou ao anjo: “Como posso ter certeza disso? Sou velho, e minha mulher é de idade avançada”.

19 A nd the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and am sent to speak unto thee and to show thee this gospel.

O anjo respondeu: “Sou Gabriel, o que está sempre na presença de Deus. Fui enviado para lhe transmitir estas boas novas.

20 A nd, behold, thou shalt be dumb and not able to speak until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou didst not believe my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

Agora você ficará mudo. Não poderá falar até o dia em que isso acontecer, porque não acreditou em minhas palavras, que se cumprirão no tempo oportuno”.

21 A nd the people waited for Zacharias and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

Enquanto isso, o povo esperava por Zacarias, estranhando sua demora no santuário.

22 A nd when he came out, he could not speak unto them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he communicated with signs and remained speechless.

Quando saiu, não conseguia falar nada; o povo percebeu então que ele tivera uma visão no santuário. Zacarias fazia sinais para eles, mas permanecia mudo.

23 A nd it came to pass that as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

Quando se completou seu período de serviço, ele voltou para casa.

24 A nd after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived and hid herself five months, saying,

Depois disso, Isabel, sua mulher, engravidou e durante cinco meses não saiu de casa.

25 T hus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

E ela dizia: “Isto é obra do Senhor! Agora ele olhou para mim favoravelmente, para desfazer a minha humilhação perante o povo”. O Nascimento de Jesus é Predito

26 ¶ And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee named Nazareth

No sexto mês Deus enviou o anjo Gabriel a Nazaré, cidade da Galiléia,

27 t o a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David and the virgin’s name was Mary.

a uma virgem prometida em casamento a certo homem chamado José, descendente de Davi. O nome da virgem era Maria.

28 A nd the angel came in unto her and said, Hail, thou that art much graced, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women.

O anjo, aproximando-se dela, disse: “Alegre-se, agraciada! O Senhor está com você!”

29 A nd when she saw him, she was troubled at his words and wondered in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

Maria ficou perturbada com essas palavras, pensando no que poderia significar esta saudação.

30 T hen the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.

Mas o anjo lhe disse: “Não tenha medo, Maria; você foi agraciada por Deus!

31 A nd, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bring forth a son and shalt call his name Jesus.

Você ficará grávida e dará à luz um filho, e lhe porá o nome de Jesus.

32 H e shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David;

Ele será grande e será chamado Filho do Altíssimo. O Senhor Deus lhe dará o trono de seu pai Davi,

33 a nd he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

e ele reinará para sempre sobre o povo de Jacó; seu Reino jamais terá fim”.

34 T hen Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

Perguntou Maria ao anjo: “Como acontecerá isso, se sou virgem?”

35 A nd the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

O anjo respondeu: “O Espírito Santo virá sobre você, e o poder do Altíssimo a cobrirá com a sua sombra. Assim, aquele que há de nascer será chamado Santo, Filho de Deus.

36 A nd, behold, thy relative Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

Também Isabel, sua parenta, terá um filho na velhice; aquela que diziam ser estéril já está em seu sexto mês de gestação.

37 F or with God nothing is impossible.

Pois nada é impossível para Deus”.

38 T hen Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

Respondeu Maria: “Sou serva do Senhor; que aconteça comigo conforme a tua palavra”. Então o anjo a deixou. Maria Visita Isabel

39 ¶ And Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda

Naqueles dias, Maria preparou-se e foi depressa para uma cidade da região montanhosa da Judéia,

40 a nd entered into the house of Zacharias and saluted Elisabeth.

onde entrou na casa de Zacarias e saudou Isabel.

41 A nd it came to pass that when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit;

Quando Isabel ouviu a saudação de Maria, o bebê agitou-se em seu ventre, e Isabel ficou cheia do Espírito Santo.

42 a nd she spoke out with a loud voice and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

Em alta voz exclamou: “Bendita é você entre as mulheres, e bendito é o filho que você dará à luz!

43 A nd whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

Mas por que sou tão agraciada, ao ponto de me visitar a mãe do meu Senhor?

44 F or, behold, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

Logo que a sua saudação chegou aos meus ouvidos, o bebê que está em meu ventre agitou-se de alegria.

45 A nd blessed is she that believed, for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

Feliz é aquela que creu que se cumprirá aquilo que o Senhor lhe disse!” O Cântico de Maria

46 T hen Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord,

Então disse Maria: “Minha alma engrandece ao Senhor

47 a nd my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saving Health,

e o meu espírito se alegra em Deus, meu Salvador,

48 f or he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden; for, behold, from now on all generations shall call me blessed.

pois atentou para a humildade da sua serva. De agora em diante, todas as gerações me chamarão bem-aventurada,

49 F or he that is mighty has done great things unto me, and holy is his name.

pois o Poderoso fez grandes coisas em meu favor; santo é o seu nome.

50 A nd his mercy is on those that fear him from generation to generation.

A sua misericórdia estende-se aos que o temem, de geração em geração.

51 H e has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

Ele realizou poderosos feitos com seu braço; dispersou os que são soberbos no mais íntimo do coração.

52 H e has put down the mighty from their thrones and exalted the humble.

Derrubou governantes dos seus tronos, mas exaltou os humildes.

53 H e has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away.

Encheu de coisas boas os famintos, mas despediu de mãos vazias os ricos.

54 H e has received his servant Israel in remembrance of his mercy

Ajudou a seu servo Israel, lembrando-se da sua misericórdia

55 a s he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed forever.

para com Abraão e seus descendentes para sempre, como dissera aos nossos antepassados”.

56 A nd Mary abode with her about three months and then returned to her own house.

Maria ficou com Isabel cerca de três meses e depois voltou para casa. O Nascimento de João Batista

57 ¶ Now Elisabeth’s full time came that she should be delivered and she brought forth a son.

Ao se completar o tempo de Isabel dar à luz, ela teve um filho.

58 A nd her neighbours and her relatives heard how the Lord had showed great mercy upon her, and they rejoiced with her.

Seus vizinhos e parentes ouviram falar da grande misericórdia que o Senhor lhe havia demonstrado e se alegraram com ela.

59 A nd it came to pass that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called him Zacharias after the name of his father.

No oitavo dia foram circuncidar o menino e queriam dar-lhe o nome do pai, Zacarias;

60 A nd his mother answered and said, Not so, but he shall be called John.

mas sua mãe tomou a palavra e disse: “Não! Ele será chamado João”.

61 A nd they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

Disseram-lhe: “Você não tem nenhum parente com esse nome”.

62 A nd they communicated with signs to his father, asking how he would have him called.

Então fizeram sinais ao pai do menino, para saber como queria que a criança se chamasse.

63 A nd he asked for a writing table and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they all marvelled.

Ele pediu uma tabuinha e, para admiração de todos, escreveu: “O nome dele é João”.

64 A nd his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spoke blessing God.

Imediatamente sua boca se abriu, sua língua se soltou e ele começou a falar, louvando a Deus.

65 A nd fear came on all that dwelt round about them, and all these things were spoken of throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

Todos os vizinhos ficaram cheios de temor, e por toda a região montanhosa da Judéia se falava sobre essas coisas.

66 A nd all those that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, Who shall this child be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

Todos os que ouviam falar disso se perguntavam: “O que vai ser este menino?” Pois a mão do Senhor estava com ele. O Cântico de Zacarias

67 ¶ And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,

Seu pai, Zacarias, foi cheio do Espírito Santo e profetizou:

68 B lessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and made redemption for his people

“Louvado seja o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, porque visitou e redimiu o seu povo.

69 A nd has raised up a horn of saving health for us in the house of his servant David,

Ele promoveu poderosa salvação para nós, na linhagem do seu servo Davi,

70 a s he spoke by the mouth of the saints who from the beginning were his prophets;

(como falara pelos seus santos profetas, na antigüidade),

71 s alvation from our enemies and from the hand of all that hate us;

salvando-nos dos nossos inimigos e da mão de todos os que nos odeiam,

72 t o fulfill mercy unto our fathers and remembering his holy covenant

para mostrar sua misericórdia aos nossos antepassados e lembrar sua santa aliança,

73 o f the oath which he made to our father Abraham,

o juramento que fez ao nosso pai Abraão:

74 t hat he would grant unto us, that without fear delivered out of the hand of our enemies, we might serve him

resgatar-nos da mão dos nossos inimigos para o servirmos sem medo,

75 i n holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.

em santidade e justiça, diante dele todos os nossos dias.

76 A nd thou, child, shalt be called prophet of the Most High, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,

E você, menino, será chamado profeta do Altíssimo, pois irá adiante do Senhor, para lhe preparar o caminho,

77 g iving knowledge of saving health unto his people for the remission of their sins

para dar ao seu povo o conhecimento da salvação, mediante o perdão dos seus pecados,

78 t hrough the bowels of mercy of our God, whereby the dayspring from on high has visited us

por causa das ternas misericórdias de nosso Deus, pelas quais do alto nos visitará o sol nascente,

79 t o give light to those that dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death, to direct our feet into the way of peace.

para brilhar sobre aqueles que estão vivendo nas trevas e na sombra da morte, e guiar nossos pés no caminho da paz”.

80 A nd the child grew and was comforted of the Spirit and was in the deserts until the day of his showing unto Israel.

E o menino crescia e se fortalecia em espírito; e viveu no deserto, até aparecer publicamente a Israel.
