1 ¶ And Job answered and said,

Então Jó respondeu:

2 N o doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

“Sem dúvida vocês são o povo, e a sabedoria morrerá com vocês!

3 B ut I have a heart as well as you; I am not inferior to you; and who shall not be able to say as much again?

Mas eu tenho a mesma capacidade de pensar que vocês têm; não sou inferior a vocês. Quem não sabe dessas coisas?

4 H e who invokes God and he answers him is mocked by his friend; the just and perfect man is laughed to scorn.

“Tornei-me objeto de riso para os meus amigos, logo eu, que clamava a Deus e ele me respondia, eu, íntegro e irrepreensível, um mero objeto de riso!

5 T he torch is held in low esteem in the thought of him that is prosperous, which was prepared to guard against a slip of the feet.

Quem está bem despreza a desgraça, o destino daqueles cujos pés escorregam.

6 ¶ The tents of robbers are at ease, and those that provoke God and those who carry gods in their hands live secure.

As tendas dos saqueadores não sofrem perturbação, e aqueles que provocam a Deus estão seguros, aqueles que transportam o seu deus em suas mãos.

7 B ut ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the heavens, and they shall show thee;

“Pergunte, porém, aos animais, e eles o ensinarão, ou às aves do céu, e elas lhe contarão;

8 o r speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; the fishes of the sea shall declare it unto thee also.

fale com a terra, e ela o instruirá, deixe que os peixes do mar o informem.

9 W hat thing of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD made them?

Quem de todos eles ignora que a mão do Senhor fez isso?

10 I n his hand is the soul of every living thing and the spirit of all flesh of man.

Em sua mão está a vida de cada criatura e o fôlego de toda a humanidade.

11 C ertainly the ear proves words and the mouth tastes foods.

O ouvido não experimenta as palavras como a língua experimenta a comida?

12 ¶ With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days intelligence.

A sabedoria se acha entre os idosos? A vida longa traz entendimento?

13 W ith him is wisdom and strength; he has counsel and intelligence.

“Deus é que tem sabedoria e poder; a ele pertencem o conselho e o entendimento.

14 B ehold, he shall break down, and it shall not be built again; he shall shut up a man, and no one shall be able to open unto him.

O que ele derruba não se pode reconstruir; quem ele aprisiona ninguém pode libertar.

15 B ehold, he shall withhold the waters, and they shall dry up; also he shall send them forth, and they shall destroy the earth.

Se ele retém as águas, predomina a seca; se as solta, devastam a terra.

16 W ith him is strength and existence; he who errs and he who leads astray are his.

A ele pertencem a força e a sabedoria; tanto o enganado quanto o enganador a ele pertencem.

17 H e causes the counsellors to walk away stripped of counsel and makes the judges to be fools.

Ele despoja e demite os conselheiros, e faz os juízes de tolos.

18 H e looses the bond of kings and girds their loins with a girdle.

Tira as algemas postas pelos reis, e amarra uma faixa em torno da cintura deles.

19 H e leads priests away spoiled and overthrows the mighty.

Despoja e demite os sacerdotes, e arruína os homens de sólida posição.

20 H e impedes the lips of those that speak the truth and takes away the counsel of the aged.

Cala os lábios dos conselheiros de confiança, e tira o discernimento dos anciãos.

21 H e pours contempt upon princes and weakens the strength of the mighty.

Derrama desprezo sobre os nobres, e desarma os poderosos.

22 H e uncovers the depths of the darkness and brings out to light the shadow of death.

Revela coisas profundas das trevas, e traz à luz densas sombras.

23 H e multiplies the Gentiles and destroys them; he scatters the Gentiles and gathers them again.

Dá grandeza às nações, e as destrói; faz crescer as nações, e as dispersa.

24 H e takes away the heart of the heads of the people of the earth and causes them to become lost, wandering without a way.

Priva da razão os líderes da terra, e os envia a perambular num deserto sem caminhos.

25 T hey grope in the darkness and not the light, and he causes them to err like drunken men.

Andam tateando nas trevas, sem nenhuma luz; ele os faz cambalear como bêbados.
