1 ¶ Now Sarai Abram’s wife bore him no children; and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

Ora, Sarai, mulher de Abrão, não lhe dera nenhum filho. Como tinha uma serva egípcia, chamada Hagar,

2 A nd Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing; I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

disse a Abrão: “Já que o Senhor me impediu de ter filhos, possua a minha serva; talvez eu possa formar família por meio dela”. Abrão atendeu à proposta de Sarai.

3 A nd Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar, her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

Quando isso aconteceu, já fazia dez anos que Abrão, seu marido, vivia em Canaã. Foi nessa ocasião que Sarai, sua mulher, lhe entregou sua serva egípcia Hagar.

4 ¶ And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

Ele possuiu Hagar, e ela engravidou. Quando se viu grávida, começou a olhar com desprezo para a sua senhora.

5 T hen Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee; I have given my maid into thy bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes; the LORD judge between me and thee.

Então Sarai disse a Abrão: “Caia sobre você a afronta que venho sofrendo. Coloquei minha serva em seus braços e, agora que ela sabe que engravidou, despreza-me. Que o Senhor seja o juiz entre mim e você”.

6 B ut Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleases thee. Then Sarai afflicted her, and she fled from her face.

Respondeu Abrão a Sarai: “Sua serva está em suas mãos. Faça com ela o que achar melhor”. Então Sarai tanto maltratou Hagar que esta acabou fugindo.

7 ¶ And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

O Anjo do Senhor encontrou Hagar perto de uma fonte no deserto, no caminho de Sur,

8 A nd he said, Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where didst thou come from and where wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.

e perguntou-lhe: “Hagar, serva de Sarai, de onde você vem? Para onde vai?” Respondeu ela: “Estou fugindo de Sarai, a minha senhora”.

9 A nd the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hands.

Disse-lhe então o Anjo do Senhor: “Volte à sua senhora e sujeite-se a ela”.

10 ¶ And the angel of the LORD also said unto her, I will multiply thy seed so exceedingly that it shall not be numbered for the multitude.

Disse mais o Anjo: “Multiplicarei tanto os seus descendentes que ninguém os poderá contar”.

11 A nd the angel of the LORD yet said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son and shalt call his name Ishmael, because the LORD has heard thy affliction.

Disse-lhe ainda o Anjo do Senhor: “Você está grávida e terá um filho, e lhe dará o nome de Ismael, porque o Senhor a ouviu em seu sofrimento.

12 A nd he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

Ele será como jumento selvagem; sua mão será contra todos, e a mão de todos contra ele, e ele viverá em hostilidade contra todos os seus irmãos”.

13 A nd she called the name of the LORD that spoke unto her, Thou God that is seen: for she said, Have I not also here seen the back of him that sees me?

Este foi o nome que ela deu ao Senhor que lhe havia falado: “Tu és o Deus que me vê”, pois dissera: “Teria eu visto Aquele que me vê?”

14 T herefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

Por isso o poço, que fica entre Cades e Berede, foi chamado Beer-Laai-Roi.

15 ¶ And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bore, Ishmael.

Hagar teve um filho de Abrão, e este lhe deu o nome de Ismael.

16 A nd Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

Abrão estava com oitenta e seis anos de idade quando Hagar lhe deu Ismael.
