1 ¶ When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes and put on sackcloth with ashes and went out into the midst of the city and cried with a loud and a bitter cry

Quando Mardoqueu soube de tudo o que tinha acontecido, rasgou as vestes, vestiu-se de pano de saco, cobriu-se de cinza, e saiu pela cidade, chorando amargamente em alta voz.

2 a nd came before the king’s gate; for no one was allowed to enter into the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth.

Foi até a porta do palácio real, mas não entrou, porque ninguém vestido de pano de saco tinha permissão de entrar.

3 A nd in each province, wherever the king’s commandment and his law came, there was great mourning among the Jews and fasting and weeping and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

Em cada província onde chegou o decreto com a ordem do rei, houve grande pranto entre os judeus, com jejum, choro e lamento. Muitos se deitavam em pano de saco e em cinza.

4 S o Esther’s maids and her eunuchs came and told her. Then the queen was grieved exceedingly, and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai and to take away his sackcloth from him; but he did not receive it.

Quando as criadas de Ester e os oficiais responsáveis pelo harém lhe contaram o que se passava com Mardoqueu, ela ficou muito aflita e mandou-lhe roupas para que as vestisse e tirasse o pano de saco; mas ele não quis aceitá-las.

5 ¶ Then Esther called for Hatach, one of the king’s eunuchs, whom he had appointed to attend her, and sent him to Mordecai, to know what it was and why it was.

Então Ester convocou Hatá, um dos oficiais do rei, nomeado para ajudá-la, e deu-lhe ordens para descobrir o que estava perturbando Mardoqueu e por que ele estava agindo assim.

6 S o Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the plaza of the city, which was before the king’s gate.

Hatá foi falar com Mardoqueu na praça da cidade, em frente da porta do palácio real.

7 A nd Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.

Mardoqueu contou-lhe tudo o que lhe tinha acontecido e quanta prata Hamã tinha prometido depositar na tesouraria real para a destruição dos judeus.

8 A lso he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to show it unto Esther and to declare it unto her and to charge her that she should go in unto the king to make supplication unto him and to make request before him for her people.

Deu-lhe também uma cópia do decreto que falava do extermínio e que tinha sido anunciado em Susã, para que ele o mostrasse a Ester e insistisse com ela para que fosse à presença do rei implorar misericórdia e interceder em favor do seu povo.

9 A nd Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

Hatá retornou e relatou a Ester tudo o que Mardoqueu lhe tinha dito.

10 A gain Esther spoke unto Hatach and sent him to say unto Mordecai,

Então ela o instruiu que dissesse o seguinte a Mardoqueu:

11 A ll the king’s slaves and the people of the king’s provinces do know that anyone, whether man or woman, who shall come unto the king into the inner court without being called, by one law shall be put to death, unless the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that they may live; but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

“Todos os oficiais do rei e o povo das províncias do império sabem que existe somente uma lei para qualquer homem ou mulher que se aproxime do rei no pátio interno sem por ele ser chamado: será morto, a não ser que o rei estenda o cetro de ouro para a pessoa e lhe poupe a vida. E eu não sou chamada à presença do rei há mais de trinta dias”.

12 A nd they told to Mordecai Esther’s words.

Quando Mardoqueu recebeu a resposta de Ester,

13 T hen Mordecai told them to answer Esther, Do not think in thy soul that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews.

mandou dizer-lhe: “Não pense que pelo fato de estar no palácio do rei, você será a única entre os judeus que escapará,

14 F or if thou art silent at this time, then enlargement and deliverance shall arise to the Jews from another place, but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed; and who knows whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

pois, se você ficar calada nesta hora, socorro e livramento surgirão de outra parte para os judeus, mas você e a família do seu pai morrerão. Quem sabe se não foi para um momento como este que você chegou à posição de rainha?”

15 T hen Esther told them to return Mordecai this answer,

Então Ester mandou esta resposta a Mardoqueu:

16 G o, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan and fast for me, and neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day; I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so I will go in unto the king, even though this is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish.

“Vá reunir todos os judeus que estão em Susã, e jejuem em meu favor. Não comam nem bebam durante três dias e três noites. Eu e minhas criadas jejuaremos como vocês. Depois disso irei ao rei, ainda que seja contra a lei. Se eu tiver que morrer, morrerei”.

17 S o Mordecai went and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.

Mardoqueu retirou-se e cumpriu todas as instruções de Ester.
