1 ¶ When the LORD thy God has cut off the Gentiles whose land the LORD thy God gives thee, and thou hast inherited them and dost dwell in their cities and in their houses,

“Quando o Senhor, o seu Deus, tiver destruído as nações cuja terra lhes dá, e quando vocês as expulsarem e ocuparem as cidades e as casas dessas nações,

2 t hou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God gives thee to inherit.

separem três cidades de refúgio na parte central da terra que o Senhor, o seu Deus, está dando a vocês para que dela tomem posse.

3 T hou shalt prepare thee a way and divide the borders of thy land, which the LORD thy God gives thee to inherit, into three parts, so that every manslayer may flee there.

Dividam em três partes a terra que o Senhor, o seu Deus, lhes está dando como herança e façam nela vias de acesso, para que aquele que matar alguém possa fugir para lá.

4 A nd this is the case of the manslayer who is to flee there, that he may live: whoever kills his neighbour by mistake, whom he hated not in time past;

“Este é o caso em que um homem que matar outro poderá fugir para lá para salvar a vida: se matar o seu próximo sem intenção, sem que houvesse inimizade entre eles.

5 a nd he who went into the woods with his neighbour to cut firewood and his hand fetched a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree and the head slipped from the handle and lighted upon his neighbour so that he died, he shall flee unto one of those cities and live,

Por exemplo, se um homem for com o seu amigo cortar lenha na floresta e, ao levantar o machado para derrubar uma árvore, o ferro escapar e atingir o seu amigo e matá-lo, ele poderá fugir para uma daquelas cidades para salvar a vida.

6 l est the avenger of the blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him, whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.

Do contrário, o vingador da vítima poderia persegui-lo enfurecido e alcançá-lo, caso a distância fosse grande demais, e poderia matá-lo, muito embora este não merecesse morrer, pois não havia inimizade entre ele e o seu próximo.

7 T herefore, I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.

É por isso que lhes ordeno que separem três cidades.

8 A nd if the LORD thy God enlarges thy borders, as he has sworn unto thy fathers, and gives thee all the land which he was to give unto thy fathers,

“Se o Senhor, o seu Deus, aumentar o seu território, como prometeu sob juramento aos seus antepassados, e lhes der toda a terra que prometeu a eles,

9 w hen thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day: to love the LORD thy God, and to walk all the days in his ways, then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, besides these three,

separem então mais três cidades. Isso acontecerá se vocês obedecerem fielmente a toda esta lei que hoje lhes ordeno: Amar o Senhor, o seu Deus, e sempre andar nos seus caminhos.

10 t hat innocent blood not be shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God gives thee for an inheritance, and the blood shall not be upon thee.

Façam isso para que não se derrame sangue inocente na sua terra, a qual o Senhor, o seu Deus, lhes dá por herança, e para que não sejam culpados de derramamento de sangue.

11 B ut when any man hates his neighbour and lies in wait for him and rises up against him and smites him mortally that he dies and flees into one of these cities,

“Mas, se alguém odiar o seu próximo, ficar à espreita dele, atacá-lo e matá-lo, e fugir para uma dessas cidades,

12 t hen the elders of his city shall send and take him from there and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, and he shall die.

as autoridades da sua cidade mandarão buscá-lo na cidade de refúgio, e o entregarão nas mãos do vingador da vítima, para que morra.

13 T hine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel that it may go well with thee.

Não tenham piedade dele. Eliminem de Israel a culpa pelo derramamento de sangue inocente, para que tudo lhes vá bem.

14 ¶ Thou shalt not reduce thy neighbour’s border, which those of old time have marked in thine inheritance, which thou shalt possess in the land that the LORD thy God gives thee to inherit.

“Não mudem os marcos de divisa da propriedade do seu vizinho, que os seus antecessores colocaram na herança que vocês receberão na terra que o Senhor, o seu Deus, lhes dá para que dela tomem posse. As Testemunhas

15 O ne witness shall not be valid against a man for any iniquity or for any sin, in any sin which he should commit. At the mouth of two witnesses or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

“Uma só testemunha não é suficiente para condenar alguém de algum crime ou delito. Qualquer acusação precisa ser confirmada pelo depoimento de duas ou três testemunhas.

16 W hen a false witness rises up against any man to testify rebellion against him,

“Se uma testemunha falsa quiser acusar um homem de algum crime,

17 t hen both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, who shall be in those days;

os dois envolvidos na questão deverão apresentar-se ao Senhor, diante dos sacerdotes e juízes que estiverem exercendo o cargo naquela ocasião.

18 a nd the judges shall make diligent inquisition; and, behold, if the witness is a false witness and has testified falsely against his brother,

Os juízes investigarão o caso e, se ficar provado que a testemunha mentiu e deu falso testemunho contra o seu próximo,

19 t hen shall ye do unto him as he had thought to have done unto his brother; so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.

dêem-lhe a punição que ele planejava para o seu irmão. Eliminem o mal do meio de vocês.

20 A nd those who remain shall hear and fear and shall never again commit any such evil among you.

O restante do povo saberá disso e terá medo, e nunca mais se fará uma coisa dessas entre vocês.

21 A nd thine eye shall not pity, but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

Não tenham piedade. Exijam vida por vida, olho por olho, dente por dente, mão por mão, pé por pé.
