1 A nd the word of Jehovah came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

К Ионе, сыну Амиттая, было слово Господне:

2 A rise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

– Собирайся, ступай в великий город Ниневию и проповедуй там, потому что его злодеяния дошли до Меня.

3 B ut Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish, from the presence of Jehovah.

Но Иона собрался бежать от Господа в Таршиш. Он отправился в Яффу, нашел уходящий в Таршиш корабль и, заплатив за проезд, сел на него, чтобы уплыть с ними от Господа.

4 B ut Jehovah sent out a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest upon the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

Но Господь навел на море страшный ветер, и поднялся такой сильный шторм, что корабль был готов разбиться.

5 A nd the mariners were afraid, and cried every one unto his god; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to be lightened of them. But Jonah had gone down into the lower part of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

Все моряки перепугались, и каждый принялся взывать к своему богу. Они побросали в море всю кладь, какая была на корабле, чтобы облегчить его. А Иона спустился в трюм, лег там и уснул крепким сном.

6 A nd the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, sleeper? arise, call upon thy God; perhaps God will think upon us, that we perish not.

Капитан пришел к нему и сказал: – Что ты спишь? Вставай, воззови к своему Богу! Может быть, Он позаботится о нас, и мы не погибнем.

7 A nd they said each one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

Моряки говорили друг другу: – Давайте кинем жребий и узнаем, за кого нам эта беда. Они бросили жребий, и жребий пал на Иону.

8 A nd they said unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us: what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

Тогда они спросили его: – Скажи нам, кто виновник этой беды? Каково твое ремесло? Откуда ты держишь путь? Из какой ты страны? Из какого народа?

9 A nd he said unto them, I am a Hebrew, and I fear Jehovah, the God of the heavens, who hath made the sea and the dry.

Он ответил: – Я еврей и поклоняюсь Господу, Богу небес, Который создал море и сушу.

10 T hen were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, What is this thou hast done? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of Jehovah: for he had told them.

Они очень перепугались и спросили: – Что же ты наделал? (Они знали, что он бежит от Господа: он уже рассказал им об этом.)

11 A nd they said unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.

А море бушевало все сильнее и сильнее, и тогда они спросили его: – Что нам сделать с тобой, чтобы море утихло перед нами?

12 A nd he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that because of me this great tempest is upon you.

– Возьмите меня и бросьте в море, – ответил он, – и оно утихнет перед вами. Я знаю, что этот страшный шторм обрушился на вас из-за меня.

13 B ut the men rowed hard to regain the land; but they could not; for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

Однако они принялись грести изо всех сил, чтобы пристать к берегу, но им это не удавалось, потому что море бушевало еще сильнее.

14 A nd they cried unto Jehovah and said, Ah, Jehovah, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, Jehovah, hast done as it pleased thee.

Тогда они стали призывать Господа: – Господи, не дай нам погибнуть за жизнь этого человека. Не взыскивай с нас за убийство невинного, ведь Ты, Господь, делаешь то, что угодно Тебе.

15 A nd they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from its raging.

Потом они взяли Иону, бросили его за борт, и бушевавшее море утихло.

16 A nd the men feared Jehovah exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto Jehovah, and made vows.

Моряки ужасно испугались Господа, принесли Господу жертву и дали обеты.

17 A nd Jehovah prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Господь сделал так, что Иону проглотила огромная рыба, и Иона пробыл в желудке рыбы три дня и три ночи.
