1 T here was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and abstained from and shunned evil.

Hubo un hombre en la tierra de Uz llamado Job; y era aquel hombre intachable, recto, temeroso de Dios y apartado del mal.

2 A nd there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.

Y le nacieron siete hijos y tres hijas.

3 H e possessed 7, 000 sheep, 3, 000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and a very great body of servants, so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the East.

Su hacienda era de siete mil ovejas, tres mil camellos, quinientas yuntas de bueyes, quinientas asnas y muchísima servidumbre; y era aquel hombre el más grande de todos los hijos del oriente.

4 H is sons used to go and feast in the house of each on his day (birthday) in turn, and they invited their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

Sus hijos solían ir y hacer un banquete en la casa de cada uno por turno, e invitaban a sus tres hermanas para que comieran y bebieran con ellos.

5 A nd when the days of their feasting were over, Job sent for them to purify and hallow them, and rose up early in the morning and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed or disowned God in their hearts. Thus did Job at all times.

Y sucedía que cuando los días del banquete habían pasado, Job enviaba a buscarlos y los santificaba, y levantándose temprano, ofrecía holocaustos conforme al número de todos ellos. Porque Job decía: Quizá mis hijos hayan pecado y maldecido a Dios en sus corazones. Así hacía Job siempre.

6 N ow there was a day when the sons (the angels) of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan (the adversary and accuser) also came among them.

Hubo un día cuando los hijos de Dios vinieron a presentarse delante del Señor, y Satanás vino también entre ellos.

7 A nd the Lord said to Satan, From where did you come? Then Satan answered the Lord, From going to and fro on the earth and from walking up and down on it.

Y el Señor dijo a Satanás: ¿De dónde vienes? Entonces Satanás respondió al Señor, y dijo: De recorrer la tierra y de andar por ella.

8 A nd the Lord said to Satan, Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and abstains from and shuns evil ?

Y el Señor dijo a Satanás: ¿Te has fijado en mi siervo Job ? Porque no hay ninguno como él sobre la tierra, hombre intachable y recto, temeroso de Dios y apartado del mal.

9 T hen Satan answered the Lord, Does Job fear God for nothing?

Respondió Satanás al Señor: ¿Acaso teme Job a Dios de balde?

10 H ave You not put a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have conferred prosperity and happiness upon him in the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

¿No has hecho tú una valla alrededor de él, de su casa y de todo lo que tiene, por todos lados ? Has bendecido el trabajo de sus manos y sus posesiones han aumentado en la tierra.

11 B ut put forth Your hand now and touch all that he has, and he will curse You to Your face.

Pero extiende ahora tu mano y toca todo lo que tiene, verás si no te maldice en tu misma cara.

12 A nd the Lord said to Satan (the adversary and the accuser), Behold, all that he has is in your power, only upon the man himself put not forth your hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.

Entonces el Señor dijo a Satanás: He aquí, todo lo que tiene está en tu poder; pero no extiendas tu mano sobre él. Y Satanás salió de la presencia del Señor. Dios permite las pruebas de Job

13 A nd there was a day when sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house,

Y aconteció que un día en que sus hijos y sus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en la casa del hermano mayor,

14 A nd there came a messenger to Job and said, The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them,

vino un mensajero a Job y dijo: Los bueyes estaban arando y las asnas paciendo junto a ellos,

15 A nd the Sabeans swooped down upon them and took away. Indeed, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.

y los sabeos atacaron y se los llevaron. También mataron a los criados a filo de espada; sólo yo escapé para contárte lo.

16 W hile he was yet speaking, there came also another and said, The fire of God (lightning) has fallen from the heavens and has burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.

Mientras estaba éste hablando, vino otro y dijo: Fuego de Dios cayó del cielo y quemó las ovejas y a los criados y los consumió; sólo yo escapé para contárte lo.

17 W hile he was yet speaking, there came also another and said, The Chaldeans divided into three bands and made a raid upon the camels and have taken them away, yes, and have slain the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.

Mientras estaba éste hablando, vino otro y dijo: Los caldeos formaron tres cuadrillas y atacaron los camellos y se los llevaron, y mataron a los criados a filo de espada; sólo yo escapé para contárte lo.

18 W hile he was yet speaking, there came also another and said, Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house,

Mientras estaba éste hablando, vino otro y dijo: Tus hijos y tus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en la casa de su hermano mayor,

19 A nd behold, there came a great from the desert, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you.

y he aquí, vino un gran viento del otro lado del desierto y azotó las cuatro esquinas de la casa, y ésta cayó sobre los jóvenes y murieron; sólo yo escapé para contárte lo.

20 T hen Job arose and rent his robe and shaved his head and fell down upon the ground and worshiped

Entonces Job se levantó, rasgó su manto, se rasuró la cabeza, y postrándose en tierra, adoró,

21 A nd said, Naked (without possessions) came I from my mother’s womb, and naked (without possessions) shall I depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed (praised and magnified in worship) be the name of the Lord!

y dijo: Desnudo salí del vientre de mi madre y desnudo volveré allá. El Señor dio y el Señor quitó; bendito sea el nombre del Señor.

22 I n all this Job sinned not nor charged God foolishly.

En todo esto Job no pecó ni culpó a Dios.
