Biciul este pentru cal, frîul pentru măgar, şi nuiaua pentru spinarea nebunilor. -

Nu răspunde nebunului după nebunia lui, ca să nu semeni şi tu cu el. -

Celce trimete o solie printr'un nebun, îşi taie singur picioarele, şi bea nedreptatea. -

7 T he legs of the lame hang loose: So is a parable in the mouth of fools.

Cum sînt picioarele ologului, aşa este şi o vorbă înţeleaptă în gura unor nebuni. -

8 A s one that bindeth a stone in a sling, So is he that giveth honor to a fool.

Cum ai pune o piatră în praştie, aşa este cînd dai mărire unui nebun. -

9 A s a thorn that goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, So is a parable in the mouth of fools.

Ca un spin care vine în mîna unui om beat, aşa este o vorbă înţeleaptă în gura nebunilor. -

10 A s an archer that woundeth all, So is he that hireth a fool and he that hireth them that pass by.

Ca un arcaş care răneşte pe toată lumea, aşa este celce tocmeşte pe nebuni şi pe întîii veniţi. -

11 A s a dog that returneth to his vomit, So is a fool that repeateth his folly.

Cum se întoarce cînele la ce a vărsat, aşa se întoarce nebunul la nebunia lui. -

12 S eest thou a man wise in his own conceit? There is more hope of a fool than of him.

Dacă vezi un om care se crede înţelept, poţi să ai mai multă nădejde pentru un nebun decît pentru el. -

13 T he sluggard saith, There is a lion in the way; A lion is in the streets.

Leneşul zice:,, Afară este un leu, pe uliţe este un leu!

14 A s the door turneth upon its hinges, So doth the sluggard upon his bed.

Cum se învîrteşte uşa pe ţîţînile ei, aşa se învîrteşte leneşul în patul lui.

15 T he sluggard burieth his hand in the dish; It wearieth him to bring it again to his mouth.

Leneşul îşi vîră mîna în blid, şi -i vine greu s'o ducă iarăş la gură. -

16 T he sluggard is wiser in his own conceit Than seven men that can render a reason.

Leneşul se crede mai înţelept decît şapte oameni cari răspund cu judecată.

17 H e that passeth by, and vexeth himself with strife belonging not to him, Is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

Un trecător care se amestecă într'o ceartă care nu -l priveşte, este ca unul care apucă un cîne de urechi.

18 A s a madman who casteth firebrands, Arrows, and death,

Ca nebunul care aruncă săgeţi aprise şi ucigătoare,

19 S o is the man that deceiveth his neighbor, And saith, Am not I in sport?

aşa este omul care înşală pe aproapele său, şi apoi zice:,, Am vrut doar să glumesc!`` -

20 F or lack of wood the fire goeth out; And where there is no whisperer, contention ceaseth.

Cînd nu mai sînt lemne, focul se stinge; şi cînd nu mai este niciun clevetitor, cearta se potoleşte.

21 A s coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire, So is a contentious man to inflame strife.

După cum cărbunele face jăratic, şi lemnul foc, tot aşa şi omul gîlcevitor aprinde cearta.

22 T he words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts.

Cuvintele clevetitorului sînt ca nişte prăjituri, alunecă pînă în fundul măruntaielor. -

23 F ervent lips and a wicked heart Are like an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross.

Ca zgura de argint pusă pe un ciob de pămînt, aşa sînt buzele aprinse şi o inimă rea.

24 H e that hateth dissembleth with his lips; But he layeth up deceit within him:

Celce urăşte se preface cu buzele lui, şi înlăuntrul lui pregăteşte înşelăciunea.

25 W hen he speaketh fair, believe him not; For there are seven abominations in his heart:

Cînd îţi vorbeşte cu glas dulce, nu -l crede, căci şapte urîciuni sînt în inima lui.

26 T hough his hatred cover itself with guile, His wickedness shall be openly showed before the assembly.

Chiar dacă-şi ascunde ura în prefăcătorie, totuş răutatea lui se va descoperi în adunare. -

27 W hoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein; And he that rolleth a stone, it shall return upon him.

Cine sapă groapa altuia cade el în ea, şi piatra se întoarce peste cel ce o prăvăleşte.

28 A lying tongue hateth those whom it hath wounded; And a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

Limba mincinoasă urăşte pe cei pe cari -i doboară ea, şi gura linguşitoare pregăteşte pieirea. -
