1 W hen you sit down to dine with a ruler, Consider carefully what is before you,

2 A nd put a knife to your throat If you are a man of great appetite.

pune-ţi un cuţit în gît, dacă eşti prea lacom.

3 D o not desire his delicacies, For it is deceptive food.

Nu pofti mîncările lui alese, căci sînt o hrană înşelătoare.

4 D o not weary yourself to gain wealth, Cease from your consideration of it.

Nu te chinui ca să te îmbogăţeşti, nu-ţi pune priceperea în aceasta.

5 W hen you set your eyes on it, it is gone. For wealth certainly makes itself wings Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.

Abia ţi-ai aruncat ochii spre ea şi nu mai este; căci bogăţia îşi face aripi, şi, ca vulturul, îşi ia sborul spre ceruri.

6 D o not eat the bread of a selfish man, Or desire his delicacies;

Nu mînca pînea celui pismaş, şi nu pofti mîncările lui alese,

7 F or as he thinks within himself, so he is. He says to you, “Eat and drink!” But his heart is not with you.

căci el este ca unul care îşi face socotelile în suflet.,, Mănîncă şi bea``, îţi va zice el; dar inima lui nu este cu tine.

8 Y ou will vomit up the morsel you have eaten, And waste your compliments.

Bucata pe care ai mîncat -o, o vei vărsa, şi cuvintele plăcute pe cari le vei spune, sînt perdute.

9 D o not speak in the hearing of a fool, For he will despise the wisdom of your words.

Nu vorbi la urechea celui nebun, căci el nesocoteşte cuvintele tale înţelepte.

10 D o not move the ancient boundary Or go into the fields of the fatherless,

Nu muta hotarul văduvei, şi nu intra în ogorul orfanilor,

11 F or their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their case against you.

căci răzbunătorul lor este puternic: El le va apăra pricina împotriva ta.

12 A pply your heart to discipline And your ears to words of knowledge.

Deschide-ţi inima la învăţătură, şi urechile la cuvintele ştiinţei.

13 D o not hold back discipline from the child, Although you strike him with the rod, he will not die.

Nu cruţa copilul de mustrare, căci dacă -l vei lovi cu nuiaua, nu va muri.

14 Y ou shall strike him with the rod And rescue his soul from Sheol.

Lovindu -l cu nuiaua, îi scoţi sufletul din locuinţa morţilor.

15 M y son, if your heart is wise, My own heart also will be glad;

Fiule, dacă-ţi va fi inima înţeleaptă, inima mea se va bucura;

16 A nd my inmost being will rejoice When your lips speak what is right.

şi lăuntrul meu se va veseli, cînd buzele tale vor spune ce este bine.

17 D o not let your heart envy sinners, But live in the fear of the Lord always.

Să nu-ţi pizmuiască inima pe cei păcătoşi, ci să aibă totdeauna frică de Domnul;

18 S urely there is a future, And your hope will not be cut off.

căci este o răsplată, şi nu ţi se va tăia nădejdea.

19 L isten, my son, and be wise, And direct your heart in the way.

Ascultă, fiule, şi fii înţelept; îndreaptă-ţi inima pe calea cea dreaptă.

20 D o not be with heavy drinkers of wine, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat;

Nu fi printre ceice beau vin, nici printre ceice se îmbuibează cu carne.

21 F or the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe one with rags.

Căci beţivul şi cel ce se dedă la îmbuibare sărăcesc, şi aţipirea te face să porţi zdrenţe.

22 L isten to your father who begot you, And do not despise your mother when she is old.

Asculă pe tatăl tău, care te -a născut, şi nu nesocoti pe mamă-ta, cînd a îmbătrînit.

23 B uy truth, and do not sell it, Get wisdom and instruction and understanding.

Cumpără adevărul, şi nu -l vinde, înţelepciunea, învăţătura şi priceperea.

24 T he father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, And he who sires a wise son will be glad in him.

Tatăl celui neprihănit se veseleşte, şi cel ce dă naştere unui înţelept se bucură.

25 L et your father and your mother be glad, And let her rejoice who gave birth to you.

Să se bucure tatăl tău şi mama ta, să se veselească cea care te -a născut.

26 G ive me your heart, my son, And let your eyes delight in my ways.

Fiule, dă-mi inima ta, şi să găsească plăcere ochii tăi în căile Mele.

27 F or a harlot is a deep pit And an adulterous woman is a narrow well.

Căci curva este o groapă adîncă, şi străina o fîntînă strîmtă.

28 S urely she lurks as a robber, And increases the faithless among men.

Ea pîndeşte ca un hoţ, şi măreşte între oameni numărul celor stricaţi.

29 W ho has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?

Ale cui sînt vaietele? Ale cui sînt oftările? Ale cui sînt neînţelegerile? Ale cui sînt plîngerile? Ale cui sînt rănirile fără pricină? Ai cui sînt ochii roşi?

30 T hose who linger long over wine, Those who go to taste mixed wine.

Ale celor ce întîrzie la vin, şi se duc să golească paharul cu vin amestecat.

31 D o not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it goes down smoothly;

Nu te uita la vin cînd curge roş şi face mărgăritare în pahar; el alunecă uşor,

32 A t the last it bites like a serpent And stings like a viper.

dar pe urmă ca un şarpe muşcă şi înţeapă ca un basilisc.

33 Y our eyes will see strange things And your mind will utter perverse things.

Ochii ţi se vor uita după femeile altora, şi inima îţi va vorbi prostii.

34 A nd you will be like one who lies down in the middle of the sea, Or like one who lies down on the top of a mast.

Vei fi ca un om culcat în mijlocul mării, ca un om culcat pe vîrful unui catarg.

35 “ They struck me, but I did not become ill; They beat me, but I did not know it. When shall I awake? I will seek another drink.”

M'a lovit... dar nu mă doare!... M'a bătut... dar nu simt nimic! Cînd... mă voi trezi? Mai vreau vin!``
