1 P ray, call, is there any to answer thee? And unto which of the holy ones dost thou turn?

Crie maintenant! Qui te répondra? Auquel des saints t'adresseras-tu?

2 F or provocation slayeth the perverse, And envy putteth to death the simple,

L'insensé périt dans sa colère, Le fou meurt dans ses emportements.

3 I -- I have seen the perverse taking root, And I mark his habitation straightway,

J'ai vu l'insensé prendre racine; Puis soudain j'ai maudit sa demeure.

4 F ar are his sons from safety, And they are bruised in the gate, And there is no deliverer.

Plus de prospérité pour ses fils; Ils sont foulés à la porte, et personne qui les délivre!

5 W hose harvest the hungry doth eat, And even from the thorns taketh it, And the designing swallowed their wealth.

Sa moisson est dévorée par des affamés, Qui viennent l'enlever jusque dans les épines, Et ses biens sont engloutis par des hommes altérés.

6 F or sorrow cometh not forth from the dust, Nor from the ground springeth up misery.

Le malheur ne sort pas de la poussière, Et la souffrance ne germe pas du sol;

7 F or man to misery is born, And the sparks go high to fly.

L'homme naît pour souffrir, Comme l'étincelle pour voler.

8 Y et I -- I inquire for God, And for God I give my word,

Pour moi, j'aurais recours à Dieu, Et c'est à Dieu que j'exposerais ma cause.

9 D oing great things, and there is no searching. Wonderful, till there is no numbering.

Il fait des choses grandes et insondables, Des merveilles sans nombre;

10 W ho is giving rain on the face of the land, And is sending waters on the out-places.

Il répand la pluie sur la terre, Et envoie l'eau sur les campagnes;

11 T o set the low on a high place, And the mourners have been high safety.

Il relève les humbles, Et délivre les affligés;

12 M aking void thoughts of the subtile, And their hands do not execute wisdom.

Il anéantit les projets des hommes rusés, Et leurs mains ne peuvent les accomplir;

13 C apturing the wise in their subtilty, And the counsel of wrestling ones was hastened,

Il prend les sages dans leur propre ruse, Et les desseins des hommes artificieux sont renversés:

14 B y day they meet darkness, And as night -- they grope at noon.

Ils rencontrent les ténèbres au milieu du jour, Ils tâtonnent en plein midi comme dans la nuit.

15 A nd He saveth the wasted from their mouth, And from a strong hand the needy,

Ainsi Dieu protège le faible contre leurs menaces, Et le sauve de la main des puissants;

16 A nd there is hope to the poor, And perverseness hath shut her mouth.

Et l'espérance soutient le malheureux, Mais l'iniquité ferme la bouche.

17 L o, the happiness of mortal man, God doth reprove him: And the chastisement of the Mighty despise not,

Heureux l'homme que Dieu châtie! Ne méprise pas la correction du Tout Puissant.

18 F or He doth pain, and He bindeth up, He smiteth, and His hands heal.

Il fait la plaie, et il la bande; Il blesse, et sa main guérit.

19 I n six distresses He delivereth thee, And in seven evil striketh not on thee.

Six fois il te délivrera de l'angoisse, Et sept fois le mal ne t'atteindra pas.

20 I n famine He hath redeemed thee from death, And in battle from the hands of the sword.

Il te sauvera de la mort pendant la famine, Et des coups du glaive pendant la guerre.

21 W hen the tongue scourgeth thou art hid, And thou art not afraid of destruction, When it cometh.

Tu seras à l'abri du fléau de la langue, Tu seras sans crainte quand viendra la dévastation.

22 A t destruction and at hunger thou mockest, And of the beast of the earth, Thou art not afraid.

Tu te riras de la dévastation comme de la famine, Et tu n'auras pas à redouter les bêtes de la terre;

23 ( For with sons of the field thy covenant, And the beast of the field Hath been at peace with thee.)

Car tu feras alliance avec les pierres des champs, Et les bêtes de la terre seront en paix avec toi.

24 A nd thou hast known that thy tent peace, And inspected thy habitation, and errest not,

Tu jouiras du bonheur sous ta tente, Tu retrouveras tes troupeaux au complet,

25 A nd hast known that numerous Thy seed, And thine offspring as the herb of the earth;

Tu verras ta postérité s'accroître, Et tes rejetons se multiplier comme l'herbe des champs.

26 T hou comest in full age unto the grave, As the going up of a stalk in its season.

Tu entreras au sépulcre dans la vieillesse, Comme on emporte une gerbe en son temps.

27 L o, this -- we searched it out -- it right, hearken; And thou, know for thyself!

Voilà ce que nous avons reconnu, voilà ce qui est; A toi d'entendre et de mettre à profit.
