1 ` When there is a strife between men, and they have come nigh unto the judgment, and they have judged, and declared righteous the righteous, and declared wrong the wrong-doer,

Lorsque des hommes, ayant entre eux une querelle, se présenteront en justice pour être jugés, on absoudra l'innocent, et l'on condamnera le coupable.

2 t hen it hath come to pass, if the wrong-doer is to be smitten, that the judge hath caused him to fall down, and hath smitten him in his presence, according to the sufficiency of his wrong-doing, by number;

Si le coupable mérite d'être battu, le juge le fera étendre par terre et frapper en sa présence d'un nombre de coups proportionné à la gravité de sa faute.

3 f orty he doth smite him -- he is not adding, lest, he is adding to smite him above these -- many stripes, and thy brother is lightly esteemed in thine eyes.

Il ne lui fera pas donner plus de quarante coups, de peur que, si l'on continuait à le frapper en allant beaucoup au delà, ton frère ne fût avili à tes yeux.

4 ` Thou dost not muzzle an ox in its threshing.

Tu n'emmuselleras point le boeuf, quand il foulera le grain.

5 ` When brethren dwell together, and one of them hath died, and hath no son, the wife of the dead is not without to a strange man; her husband's brother doth go in unto her, and hath taken her to him for a wife, and doth perform the duty of her husband's brother;

Lorsque des frères demeureront ensemble, et que l'un d'eux mourra sans laisser de fils, la femme du défunt ne se mariera point au dehors avec un étranger, mais son beau-frère ira vers elle, la prendra pour femme, et l'épousera comme beau-frère.

6 a nd it hath been, the first-born which she beareth doth rise for the name of his dead brother, and his name is not wiped away out of Israel.

Le premier-né qu'elle enfantera succédera au frère mort et portera son nom, afin que ce nom ne soit pas effacé d'Israël.

7 ` And if the man doth not delight to take his brother's wife, then hath his brother's wife gone up to the gate, unto the elders, and said, My husband's brother is refusing to raise up to his brother a name in Israel; he hath not been willing to perform the duty of my husband's brother;

Si cet homme ne veut pas prendre sa belle-soeur, elle montera à la porte vers les anciens, et dira: Mon beau-frère refuse de relever en Israël le nom de son frère, il ne veut pas m'épouser par droit de beau-frère.

8 a nd the elders of his city have called for him, and spoken unto him, and he hath stood and said, I have no desire to take her;

Les anciens de la ville l'appelleront, et lui parleront. S'il persiste, et dit: Je ne veux pas la prendre,

9 ` Then hath his brother's wife drawn nigh unto him, before the eyes of the elders, and drawn his shoe from off his foot, and spat in his face, and answered and said, Thus it is done to the man who doth not build up the house of his brother;

alors sa belle-soeur s'approchera de lui en présence des anciens, lui ôtera son soulier du pied, et lui crachera au visage. Et prenant la parole, elle dira: Ainsi sera fait à l'homme qui ne relève pas la maison de son frère.

10 a nd his name hath been called in Israel -- The house of him whose shoe is drawn off.

Et sa maison sera appelée en Israël la maison du déchaussé.

11 ` When men strive together, one with another, and the wife of the one hath drawn near to deliver her husband out of the hand of his smiter, and hath put forth her hand, and laid hold on his secrets,

Lorsque des hommes se querelleront ensemble, l'un avec l'autre, si la femme de l'un s'approche pour délivrer son mari de la main de celui qui le frappe, si elle avance la main et saisit ce dernier par les parties honteuses,

12 t hen thou hast cut off her hand, thine eye doth not spare.

tu lui couperas la main, tu ne jetteras sur elle aucun regard de pitié.

13 ` Thou hast not in thy bag a stone and a stone, a great and a small.

Tu n'auras point dans ton sac deux sortes de poids, un gros et un petit.

14 T hou hast not in thy house an ephah and an ephah, a great and a small.

Tu n'auras point dans ta maison deux sortes d'épha, un grand et un petit.

15 T hou hast a stone complete and just, thou hast an ephah complete and just, so that they prolong thy days on the ground which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee;

Tu auras un poids exact et juste, tu auras un épha exact et juste, afin que tes jours se prolongent dans le pays que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne.

16 f or the abomination of Jehovah thy God any one doing these things, any one doing iniquity.

Car quiconque fait ces choses, quiconque commet une iniquité, est en abomination à l'Éternel, ton Dieu.

17 ` Remember that which Amalek hath done to thee in the way, in your going out from Egypt,

Souviens-toi de ce que te fit Amalek pendant la route, lors de votre sortie d'Égypte,

18 t hat he hath met thee in the way, and smiteth in all those feeble behind thee (and thou wearied and fatigued), and is not fearing God.

comment il te rencontra dans le chemin, et, sans aucune crainte de Dieu, tomba sur toi par derrière, sur tous ceux qui se traînaient les derniers, pendant que tu étais las et épuisé toi-même.

19 A nd it hath been, in Jehovah thy God's giving rest to thee, from all thine enemies round about, in the land which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee -- an inheritance to possess it -- thou dost blot out the rememberance of Amalek from under the heavens -- thou dost not forget.

Lorsque l'Éternel, ton Dieu, après t'avoir délivré de tous les ennemis qui t'entourent, t'accordera du repos dans le pays que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne en héritage et en propriété, tu effaceras la mémoire d'Amalek de dessous les cieux: ne l'oublie point.
