1 A nd the whole earth is of one pronunciation, and of the same words,

2 a nd it cometh to pass, in their journeying from the east, that they find a valley in the land of Shinar, and dwell there;

Comme ils étaient partis de l'orient, ils trouvèrent une plaine au pays de Schinear, et ils y habitèrent.

3 a nd they say each one to his neighbour, `Give help, let us make bricks, and burn thoroughly:' and the brick is to them for stone, and the bitumen hath been to them for mortar.

Ils se dirent l'un à l'autre: Allons! faisons des briques, et cuisons-les au feu. Et la brique leur servit de pierre, et le bitume leur servit de ciment.

4 A nd they say, `Give help, let us build for ourselves a city and tower, and its head in the heavens, and make for ourselves a name, lest we be scattered over the face of all the earth.'

Ils dirent encore: Allons! bâtissons-nous une ville et une tour dont le sommet touche au ciel, et faisons-nous un nom, afin que nous ne soyons pas dispersés sur la face de toute la terre.

5 A nd Jehovah cometh down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men have builded;

L'Éternel descendit pour voir la ville et la tour que bâtissaient les fils des hommes.

6 a nd Jehovah saith, `Lo, the people one, and one pronunciation to them all, and this it hath dreamed of doing; and now, nothing is restrained from them of that which they have purposed to do.

Et l'Éternel dit: Voici, ils forment un seul peuple et ont tous une même langue, et c'est là ce qu'ils ont entrepris; maintenant rien ne les empêcherait de faire tout ce qu'ils auraient projeté.

7 G ive help, let us go down, and mingle there their pronunciation, so that a man doth not understand the pronunciation of his companion.'

Allons! descendons, et là confondons leur langage, afin qu'ils n'entendent plus la langue, les uns des autres.

8 A nd Jehovah doth scatter them from thence over the face of all the earth, and they cease to build the city;

Et l'Éternel les dispersa loin de là sur la face de toute la terre; et ils cessèrent de bâtir la ville.

9 t herefore hath called its name Babel, for there hath Jehovah mingled the pronunciation of all the earth, and from thence hath Jehovah scattered them over the face of all the earth.

C'est pourquoi on l'appela du nom de Babel, car c'est là que l'Éternel confondit le langage de toute la terre, et c'est de là que l'Éternel les dispersa sur la face de toute la terre.

10 T hese births of Shem: Shem a son of an hundred years, and begetteth Arphaxad two years after the deluge.

Voici la postérité de Sem. Sem, âgé de cent ans, engendra Arpacschad, deux ans après le déluge.

11 A nd Shem liveth after his begetting Arphaxad five hundred years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

Sem vécut, après la naissance d'Arpacschad, cinq cents ans; et il engendra des fils et des filles.

12 A nd Arphaxad hath lived five and thirty years, and begetteth Salah.

Arpacschad, âgé de trente-cinq ans, engendra Schélach.

13 A nd Arphaxad liveth after his begetting Salah four hundred and three years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

Arpacschad vécut, après la naissance de Schélach, quatre cent trois ans; et il engendra des fils et des filles.

14 A nd Salah hath lived thirty years, and begetteth Eber.

Schélach, âgé de trente ans, engendra Héber.

15 A nd Salah liveth after his begetting Eber four hundred and three years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

Schélach vécut, après la naissance d'Héber, quatre cent trois ans; et il engendra des fils et des filles.

16 A nd Eber liveth four and thirty years, and begetteth Peleg.

Héber, âgé de trente-quatre ans, engendra Péleg.

17 A nd Eber liveth after his begetting Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

19 A nd Peleg liveth after his begetting Reu two hundred and nine years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

20 A nd Reu liveth two and thirty years, and begetteth Serug.

21 A nd Reu liveth after his begetting Serug two hundred and seven years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

22 A nd Serug liveth thirty years, and begetteth Nahor.

23 A nd Serug liveth after his begetting Nahor two hundred years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

24 A nd Nahor liveth nine and twenty years, and begetteth Terah.

Nachor, âgé de vingt-neuf ans, engendra Térach.

25 A nd Nahor liveth after his begetting Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

26 A nd Terah liveth seventy years, and begetteth Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27 A nd these births of Terah: Terah hath begotten Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran hath begotten Lot;

28 a nd Haran dieth in the presence of Terah his father, in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees.

Et Haran mourut en présence de Térach, son père, au pays de sa naissance, à Ur en Chaldée. -

29 A nd Abram and Nahor take to themselves wives; the name of Abram's wife Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife Milcah, daughter of Haran, father of Milcah, and father of Iscah.

Abram et Nachor prirent des femmes: le nom de la femme d'Abram était Saraï, et le nom de la femme de Nachor était Milca, fille d'Haran, père de Milca et père de Jisca.

30 A nd Sarai is barren -- she hath no child.

Saraï était stérile: elle n'avait point d'enfants.

31 A nd Terah taketh Abram his son, and Lot, son of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, wife of Abram his son, and they go out with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go towards the land of Canaan; and they come unto Charan, and dwell there.

Térach prit Abram, son fils, et Lot, fils d'Haran, fils de son fils, et Saraï, sa belle-fille, femme d'Abram, son fils. Ils sortirent ensemble d'Ur en Chaldée, pour aller au pays de Canaan. Ils vinrent jusqu'à Charan, et ils y habitèrent.

32 A nd the days of Terah are two hundred and five years, and Terah dieth in Charan.

Les jours de Térach furent de deux cent cinq ans; et Térach mourut à Charan.
