1 A nd the whole earth is of one pronunciation, and of the same words,
Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words.
2 a nd it cometh to pass, in their journeying from the east, that they find a valley in the land of Shinar, and dwell there;
It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
3 a nd they say each one to his neighbour, `Give help, let us make bricks, and burn thoroughly:' and the brick is to them for stone, and the bitumen hath been to them for mortar.
They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.
4 A nd they say, `Give help, let us build for ourselves a city and tower, and its head in the heavens, and make for ourselves a name, lest we be scattered over the face of all the earth.'
They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
5 A nd Jehovah cometh down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men have builded;
The Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
6 a nd Jehovah saith, `Lo, the people one, and one pronunciation to them all, and this it hath dreamed of doing; and now, nothing is restrained from them of that which they have purposed to do.
The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.
7 G ive help, let us go down, and mingle there their pronunciation, so that a man doth not understand the pronunciation of his companion.'
Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
8 A nd Jehovah doth scatter them from thence over the face of all the earth, and they cease to build the city;
So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.
9 t herefore hath called its name Babel, for there hath Jehovah mingled the pronunciation of all the earth, and from thence hath Jehovah scattered them over the face of all the earth.

10 T hese births of Shem: Shem a son of an hundred years, and begetteth Arphaxad two years after the deluge.

11 A nd Shem liveth after his begetting Arphaxad five hundred years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

12 A nd Arphaxad hath lived five and thirty years, and begetteth Salah.

14 A nd Salah hath lived thirty years, and begetteth Eber.

16 A nd Eber liveth four and thirty years, and begetteth Peleg.
Eber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg;
17 A nd Eber liveth after his begetting Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

18 A nd Peleg liveth thirty years, and begetteth Reu.
Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu;
19 A nd Peleg liveth after his begetting Reu two hundred and nine years, and begetteth sons and daughters.
and Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after he became the father of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.
20 A nd Reu liveth two and thirty years, and begetteth Serug.
Reu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug;
21 A nd Reu liveth after his begetting Serug two hundred and seven years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

22 A nd Serug liveth thirty years, and begetteth Nahor.

24 A nd Nahor liveth nine and twenty years, and begetteth Terah.
Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terah;
25 A nd Nahor liveth after his begetting Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

26 A nd Terah liveth seventy years, and begetteth Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.
27 A nd these births of Terah: Terah hath begotten Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran hath begotten Lot;
Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran; and Haran became the father of Lot.
28 a nd Haran dieth in the presence of Terah his father, in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees.
Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
29 A nd Abram and Nahor take to themselves wives; the name of Abram's wife Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife Milcah, daughter of Haran, father of Milcah, and father of Iscah.
Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.
30 A nd Sarai is barren -- she hath no child.

31 A nd Terah taketh Abram his son, and Lot, son of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, wife of Abram his son, and they go out with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go towards the land of Canaan; and they come unto Charan, and dwell there.
Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there.
32 A nd the days of Terah are two hundred and five years, and Terah dieth in Charan.
