1 A nd these births of Aaron and Moses, in the day of Jehovah's speaking with Moses in mount Sinai.
Now these are the records of the generations of Aaron and Moses at the time when the Lord spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.
2 A nd these the names of the sons of Aaron: the first-born Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar;
These then are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
3 t hese the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whose hand he hath consecrated for acting as priest.
These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom he ordained to serve as priests.
4 A nd Nadab dieth -- Abihu also -- before Jehovah, in their bringing near strange fire before Jehovah, in the wilderness of Sinai, and sons they had not; and Eleazar -- Ithamar also -- acteth as priest in the presence of Aaron their father.
But Nadab and Abihu died before the Lord when they offered strange fire before the Lord in the wilderness of Sinai; and they had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the lifetime of their father Aaron.
5 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,
Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
6 ` Bring near the tribe of Levi, and thou hast caused it to stand before Aaron the priest, and they have served him,
“ Bring the tribe of Levi near and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him.
7 a nd kept his charge, and the charge of all the company before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle;
They shall perform the duties for him and for the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.
8 a nd they have kept all the vessels of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the sons of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle;
They shall also keep all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, along with the duties of the sons of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.
9 a nd thou hast given the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; they are surely given to him out of the sons of Israel.
You shall thus give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; they are wholly given to him from among the sons of Israel.
10 ` And Aaron and his sons thou dost appoint, and they have kept their priesthood, and the stranger who cometh near is put to death.'
So you shall appoint Aaron and his sons that they may keep their priesthood, but the layman who comes near shall be put to death.”
11 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,
Again the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
12 ` And I, lo, I have taken the Levites from the midst of the sons of Israel instead of every first-born opening a womb among the sons of Israel, and the Levites have been Mine;
“Now, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the sons of Israel instead of every firstborn, the first issue of the womb among the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall be Mine.
13 f or Mine every first-born, in the day of My smiting every first-born in the land of Egypt I have sanctified to Myself every first-born in Israel, from man unto beast; Mine they are; I Jehovah.'
For all the firstborn are Mine; on the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified to Myself all the firstborn in Israel, from man to beast. They shall be Mine; I am the Lord.”
14 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,
Then the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,
15 ` Number the sons of Levi by the house of their fathers, by their families; every male from a son of a month and upward thou dost number them.'
“ Number the sons of Levi by their fathers’ households, by their families; every male from a month old and upward you shall number.”
16 A nd Moses numbereth them according to the command of Jehovah, as he hath been commanded.
So Moses numbered them according to the word of the Lord, just as he had been commanded.
17 A nd these are sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari.
These then are the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon and Kohath and Merari.
18 A nd these the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei.
These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei;
19 A nd the sons of Kohath, by their families, Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.
and the sons of Kohath by their families: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel;
20 A nd the sons of Merari by their families Mahli and Mushi; these are the families of the Levites, by the house of their fathers.
and the sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers’ households.
21 O f Gershon the family of the Libnite, and the family of the Shimite; these are the families of the Gershonite.
Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites and the family of the Shimeites; these were the families of the Gershonites.
22 T heir numbered ones, in number, every male from a son of a month and upward, their numbered ones seven thousand and five hundred.
Their numbered men, in the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, even their numbered men were 7, 500.
23 T he families of the Gershonite, behind the tabernacle, do encamp westward.
The families of the Gershonites were to camp behind the tabernacle westward,
24 A nd the prince of a father's house for the Gershonite Eliasaph son of Lael.
and the leader of the fathers’ households of the Gershonites was Eliasaph the son of Lael. Duties of the Priests
25 A nd the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting the tabernacle, and the tent, its covering, and the vail at the opening of the tent of meeting,
Now the duties of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting involved the tabernacle and the tent, its covering, and the screen for the doorway of the tent of meeting,
26 a nd the hangings of the court, and the vail at the opening of the court, which by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and its cords, to all its service.
and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the doorway of the court which is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its cords, according to all the service concerning them.
27 A nd of Kohath the family of the Amramite, and the family of the Izharite, and the family of the Hebronite, and the family of the Uzzielite; these are families of the Kohathite.
Of Kohath was the family of the Amramites and the family of the Izharites and the family of the Hebronites and the family of the Uzzielites; these were the families of the Kohathites.
28 I n number, all the males, from a son of a month and upward, eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary.
In the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, there were 8, 600, performing the duties of the sanctuary.
29 T he families of the sons of Kohath encamp by the side of the tabernacle southward.
The families of the sons of Kohath were to camp on the southward side of the tabernacle,
30 A nd the prince of a father's house for the families of the Kohathite Elizaphan son of Uzziel.
and the leader of the fathers’ households of the Kohathite families was Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.
31 A nd their charge the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary with which they serve, and the vail, and all its service.
Now their duties involved the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the utensils of the sanctuary with which they minister, and the screen, and all the service concerning them;
32 A nd the prince of the princes of the Levites, Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, the oversight of the keepers of the charge of the sanctuary.
and Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest was the chief of the leaders of Levi, and had the oversight of those who perform the duties of the sanctuary.
33 O f Merari the family of the Mahlite, and the family of the Mushite; these the families of Merari.
Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites; these were the families of Merari.
34 A nd their numbered ones, in number, all the males from a son of a month and upward, six thousand and two hundred.
Their numbered men in the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, were 6, 200.
35 A nd the prince of a father's house for the families of Merari Zuriel son of Abihail; by the side of the tabernacle they encamp northward.
The leader of the fathers’ households of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. They were to camp on the northward side of the tabernacle.
36 A nd the oversight -- the charge of the sons of Merari -- the boards of the tabernacle, and its bars, and its pillars, and its sockets, and all its vessels, and all its service,
Now the appointed duties of the sons of Merari involved the frames of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, all its equipment, and the service concerning them,
37 a nd the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords.
and the pillars around the court with their sockets and their pegs and their cords.
38 A nd those encamping before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting, at the east, Moses and Aaron, and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the sons of Israel, and the stranger who cometh near is put to death.
Now those who were to camp before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrise, are Moses and Aaron and his sons, performing the duties of the sanctuary for the obligation of the sons of Israel; but the layman coming near was to be put to death.
39 A ll those numbered of the Levites whom Moses numbered -- Aaron also -- by the command of Jehovah, by their families, every male from a son of a month and upward, two and twenty thousand.
All the numbered men of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the command of the Lord by their families, every male from a month old and upward, were 22, 000. Firstborn Redeemed
40 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Number every first-born male of the sons of Israel from a son of a month and upward, and take up the number of their names;
Then the Lord said to Moses, “ Number every firstborn male of the sons of Israel from a month old and upward, and make a list of their names.
41 a nd thou hast taken the Levites for Me (I Jehovah), instead of every first-born among the sons of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of every firstling among the cattle of the sons of Israel.'
You shall take the Levites for Me, I am the Lord, instead of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the cattle of the sons of Israel.”
42 A nd Moses numbereth, as Jehovah hath commanded him, all the first-born among the sons of Israel.
So Moses numbered all the firstborn among the sons of Israel, just as the Lord had commanded him;
43 A nd all the first-born -- male -- by the number of names, from a son of a month and upward, of their numbered ones, are two and twenty thousand two hundred and seventy and three.
and all the firstborn males by the number of names from a month old and upward, for their numbered men were 22, 273.
44 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,
Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
45 ` Take the Levites instead of every first-born among the sons of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites have been Mine; I Jehovah.
“ Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel and the cattle of the Levites. And the Levites shall be Mine; I am the Lord.
46 ` And those ransomed of the two hundred and seventy and three (who are more than the Levites) of the first-born of the sons of Israel,
For the ransom of the 273 of the firstborn of the sons of Israel who are in excess beyond the Levites,
47 t hou hast even taken five shekels a-piece by the poll -- by the shekel of the sanctuary thou takest; twenty gerahs the shekel;
you shall take five shekels apiece, per head; you shall take them in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary ( the shekel is twenty gerahs),
48 a nd thou hast given the money to Aaron, and to his sons, whereby those over and above are ransomed.'
and give the money, the ransom of those who are in excess among them, to Aaron and to his sons.”
49 A nd Moses taketh the ransom money from those over and above those ransomed by the Levites;
So Moses took the ransom money from those who were in excess, beyond those ransomed by the Levites;
50 f rom the first-born of the sons of Israel he hath taken the money, a thousand and three hundred and sixty and five -- by the shekel of the sanctuary;
from the firstborn of the sons of Israel he took the money in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary, 1, 365.
51 a nd Moses giveth the money of those ransomed to Aaron, and to his sons, according to the command of Jehovah, as Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
Then Moses gave the ransom money to Aaron and to his sons, at the command of the Lord, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
