1 N ow these are the records of Aaron and Moses when the Lord spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.

Now these are the records of the generations of Aaron and Moses at the time when the Lord spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.

2 A nd these are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab, the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

These then are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

3 T hese are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom he consecrated to minister as priests.

These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom he ordained to serve as priests.

4 N adab and Abihu had died before the Lord when they offered profane fire before the Lord in the Wilderness of Sinai; and they had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar ministered as priests in the presence of Aaron their father. The Levites Serve in the Tabernacle

But Nadab and Abihu died before the Lord when they offered strange fire before the Lord in the wilderness of Sinai; and they had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the lifetime of their father Aaron.

5 A nd the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

6 Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him.

“ Bring the tribe of Levi near and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him.

7 A nd they shall attend to his needs and the needs of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of meeting, to do the work of the tabernacle.

They shall perform the duties for him and for the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.

8 A lso they shall attend to all the furnishings of the tabernacle of meeting, and to the needs of the children of Israel, to do the work of the tabernacle.

They shall also keep all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, along with the duties of the sons of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.

9 A nd you shall give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are given entirely to him from among the children of Israel.

You shall thus give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; they are wholly given to him from among the sons of Israel.

10 S o you shall appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall attend to their priesthood; but the outsider who comes near shall be put to death.”

So you shall appoint Aaron and his sons that they may keep their priesthood, but the layman who comes near shall be put to death.”

11 T hen the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

Again the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

12 Now behold, I Myself have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of every firstborn who opens the womb among the children of Israel. Therefore the Levites shall be Mine,

“Now, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the sons of Israel instead of every firstborn, the first issue of the womb among the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall be Mine.

13 b ecause all the firstborn are Mine. On the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified to Myself all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast. They shall be Mine: I am the Lord.” Census of the Levites Commanded

For all the firstborn are Mine; on the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified to Myself all the firstborn in Israel, from man to beast. They shall be Mine; I am the Lord.”

14 T hen the Lord spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, saying:

Then the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,

15 Number the children of Levi by their fathers’ houses, by their families; you shall number every male from a month old and above.”

“ Number the sons of Levi by their fathers’ households, by their families; every male from a month old and upward you shall number.”

16 S o Moses numbered them according to the word of the Lord, as he was commanded.

So Moses numbered them according to the word of the Lord, just as he had been commanded.

17 T hese were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

These then are the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon and Kohath and Merari.

18 A nd these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei.

These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei;

19 A nd the sons of Kohath by their families: Amram, Izehar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

and the sons of Kohath by their families: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel;

20 A nd the sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites by their fathers’ houses.

21 F rom Gershon came the family of the Libnites and the family of the Shimites; these were the families of the Gershonites.

22 T hose who were numbered, according to the number of all the males from a month old and above—of those who were numbered there were seven thousand five hundred.

Their numbered men, in the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, even their numbered men were 7, 500.

23 T he families of the Gershonites were to camp behind the tabernacle westward.

24 A nd the leader of the father’s house of the Gershonites was Eliasaph the son of Lael.

and the leader of the fathers’ households of the Gershonites was Eliasaph the son of Lael. Duties of the Priests

25 T he duties of the children of Gershon in the tabernacle of meeting included the tabernacle, the tent with its covering, the screen for the door of the tabernacle of meeting,

Now the duties of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting involved the tabernacle and the tent, its covering, and the screen for the doorway of the tent of meeting,

26 t he screen for the door of the court, the hangings of the court which are around the tabernacle and the altar, and their cords, according to all the work relating to them.

and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the doorway of the court which is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its cords, according to all the service concerning them.

27 F rom Kohath came the family of the Amramites, the family of the Izharites, the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites; these were the families of the Kohathites.

Of Kohath was the family of the Amramites and the family of the Izharites and the family of the Hebronites and the family of the Uzzielites; these were the families of the Kohathites.

28 A ccording to the number of all the males, from a month old and above, there were eight thousand six hundred keeping charge of the sanctuary.

In the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, there were 8, 600, performing the duties of the sanctuary.

29 T he families of the children of Kohath were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle.

The families of the sons of Kohath were to camp on the southward side of the tabernacle,

30 A nd the leader of the fathers’ house of the families of the Kohathites was Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.

and the leader of the fathers’ households of the Kohathite families was Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.

31 T heir duty included the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the utensils of the sanctuary with which they ministered, the screen, and all the work relating to them.

Now their duties involved the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the utensils of the sanctuary with which they minister, and the screen, and all the service concerning them;

32 A nd Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest was to be chief over the leaders of the Levites, with oversight of those who kept charge of the sanctuary.

and Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest was the chief of the leaders of Levi, and had the oversight of those who perform the duties of the sanctuary.

33 F rom Merari came the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites; these were the families of Merari.

34 A nd those who were numbered, according to the number of all the males from a month old and above, were six thousand two hundred.

Their numbered men in the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, were 6, 200.

35 T he leader of the fathers’ house of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. These were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle.

36 A nd the appointed duty of the children of Merari included the boards of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, its utensils, all the work relating to them,

Now the appointed duties of the sons of Merari involved the frames of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, all its equipment, and the service concerning them,

37 a nd the pillars of the court all around, with their sockets, their pegs, and their cords.

and the pillars around the court with their sockets and their pegs and their cords.

38 M oreover those who were to camp before the tabernacle on the east, before the tabernacle of meeting, were Moses, Aaron, and his sons, keeping charge of the sanctuary, to meet the needs of the children of Israel; but the outsider who came near was to be put to death.

Now those who were to camp before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrise, are Moses and Aaron and his sons, performing the duties of the sanctuary for the obligation of the sons of Israel; but the layman coming near was to be put to death.

39 A ll who were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of the Lord, by their families, all the males from a month old and above, were twenty-two thousand. Levites Dedicated Instead of the Firstborn

All the numbered men of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the command of the Lord by their families, every male from a month old and upward, were 22, 000. Firstborn Redeemed

40 T hen the Lord said to Moses: “Number all the firstborn males of the children of Israel from a month old and above, and take the number of their names.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “ Number every firstborn male of the sons of Israel from a month old and upward, and make a list of their names.

41 A nd you shall take the Levites for Me—I am the Lord —instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the livestock of the children of Israel.”

You shall take the Levites for Me, I am the Lord, instead of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the cattle of the sons of Israel.”

42 S o Moses numbered all the firstborn among the children of Israel, as the Lord commanded him.

So Moses numbered all the firstborn among the sons of Israel, just as the Lord had commanded him;

43 A nd all the firstborn males, according to the number of names from a month old and above, of those who were numbered of them, were twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three.

and all the firstborn males by the number of names from a month old and upward, for their numbered men were 22, 273.

44 T hen the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

45 Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites instead of their livestock. The Levites shall be Mine: I am the Lord.

“ Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel and the cattle of the Levites. And the Levites shall be Mine; I am the Lord.

46 A nd for the redemption of the two hundred and seventy-three of the firstborn of the children of Israel, who are more than the number of the Levites,

For the ransom of the 273 of the firstborn of the sons of Israel who are in excess beyond the Levites,

47 y ou shall take five shekels for each one individually; you shall take them in the currency of the shekel of the sanctuary, the shekel of twenty gerahs.

you shall take five shekels apiece, per head; you shall take them in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary ( the shekel is twenty gerahs),

48 A nd you shall give the money, with which the excess number of them is redeemed, to Aaron and his sons.”

and give the money, the ransom of those who are in excess among them, to Aaron and to his sons.”

49 S o Moses took the redemption money from those who were over and above those who were redeemed by the Levites.

So Moses took the ransom money from those who were in excess, beyond those ransomed by the Levites;

50 F rom the firstborn of the children of Israel he took the money, one thousand three hundred and sixty-five shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary.

from the firstborn of the sons of Israel he took the money in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary, 1, 365.

51 A nd Moses gave their redemption money to Aaron and his sons, according to the word of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.

Then Moses gave the ransom money to Aaron and to his sons, at the command of the Lord, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
