1 T hus says the Lord: “For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.

Thus says the Lord, “For three transgressions of Moab and for four I will not revoke its punishment, Because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.

2 B ut I will send a fire upon Moab, And it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth; Moab shall die with tumult, With shouting and trumpet sound.

“So I will send fire upon Moab And it will consume the citadels of Kerioth; And Moab will die amid tumult, With war cries and the sound of a trumpet.

3 A nd I will cut off the judge from its midst, And slay all its princes with him,” Says the Lord. Judgment on Judah

“I will also cut off the judge from her midst And slay all her princes with him,” says the Lord.

4 T hus says the Lord: “For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because they have despised the law of the Lord, And have not kept His commandments. Their lies lead them astray, Lies which their fathers followed.

Thus says the Lord, “For three transgressions of Judah and for four I will not revoke its punishment, Because they rejected the law of the Lord And have not kept His statutes; Their lies also have led them astray, Those after which their fathers walked.

5 B ut I will send a fire upon Judah, And it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.” Judgment on Israel

“So I will send fire upon Judah And it will consume the citadels of Jerusalem.”

6 T hus says the Lord: “For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because they sell the righteous for silver, And the poor for a pair of sandals.

Thus says the Lord, “For three transgressions of Israel and for four I will not revoke its punishment, Because they sell the righteous for money And the needy for a pair of sandals.

7 T hey pant after the dust of the earth which is on the head of the poor, And pervert the way of the humble. A man and his father go in to the same girl, To defile My holy name.

“These who pant after the very dust of the earth on the head of the helpless Also turn aside the way of the humble; And a man and his father resort to the same girl In order to profane My holy name.

8 T hey lie down by every altar on clothes taken in pledge, And drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.

“On garments taken as pledges they stretch out beside every altar, And in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.

9 Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, Whose height was like the height of the cedars, And he was as strong as the oaks; Yet I destroyed his fruit above And his roots beneath.

“Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, Though his height was like the height of cedars And he was strong as the oaks; I even destroyed his fruit above and his root below.

10 A lso it was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt, And led you forty years through the wilderness, To possess the land of the Amorite.

“It was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt, And I led you in the wilderness forty years That you might take possession of the land of the Amorite.

11 I raised up some of your sons as prophets, And some of your young men as Nazirites. Is it not so, O you children of Israel?” Says the Lord.

“Then I raised up some of your sons to be prophets And some of your young men to be Nazirites. Is this not so, O sons of Israel?” declares the Lord.

12 But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink, And commanded the prophets saying, ‘Do not prophesy!’

“But you made the Nazirites drink wine, And you commanded the prophets saying, ‘You shall not prophesy!’

13 Behold, I am weighed down by you, As a cart full of sheaves is weighed down.

“Behold, I am weighted down beneath you As a wagon is weighted down when filled with sheaves.

14 T herefore flight shall perish from the swift, The strong shall not strengthen his power, Nor shall the mighty deliver himself;

“ Flight will perish from the swift, And the stalwart will not strengthen his power, Nor the mighty man save his life.

15 H e shall not stand who handles the bow, The swift of foot shall not escape, Nor shall he who rides a horse deliver himself.

“He who grasps the bow will not stand his ground, The swift of foot will not escape, Nor will he who rides the horse save his life.

16 T he most courageous men of might Shall flee naked in that day,” Says the Lord.

“Even the bravest among the warriors will flee naked in that day,” declares the Lord.
