1 T hen the Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to Him, having come from Jerusalem.

The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem,

2 N ow when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault.

and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed.

3 F or the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders.

(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the traditions of the elders;

4 W hen they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other things which they have received and hold, like the washing of cups, pitchers, copper vessels, and couches.

and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of cups and pitchers and copper pots.)

5 T hen the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”

6 H e answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.

And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘ This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me.

7 A nd in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

‘ But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’

8 F or laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men —the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”

Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.”

9 H e said to them, “ All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.

He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.

10 F or Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’

For Moses said, ‘ Honor your father and your mother ’; and, ‘ He who speaks evil of father or mother, is to be put to death ’;

11 B ut you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”—’ (that is, a gift to God ),

but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God ),’

12 t hen you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother,

you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother;

13 m aking the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.” The Heart of Man

14 W hen He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear Me, everyone, and understand:

After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:

15 T here is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a man.

there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man.

16 I f anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”

'> If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” ]

17 W hen He had entered a house away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable.

When he had left the crowd and entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable.

18 S o He said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him,

And He said to them, “Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him,

19 b ecause it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?”

because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated?” ( Thus He declared all foods clean.)

20 A nd He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man.

And He was saying, “ That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man.

21 F or from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22 t hefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.

deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness.

23 A ll these evil things come from within and defile a man.” A Gentile Shows Her Faith

All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.” The Syrophoenician Woman

24 F rom there He arose and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And He entered a house and wanted no one to know it, but He could not be hidden.

Jesus got up and went away from there to the region of Tyre. And when He had entered a house, He wanted no one to know of it; yet He could not escape notice.

25 F or a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard about Him, and she came and fell at His feet.

But after hearing of Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet.

26 T he woman was a Greek, a Syro-Phoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

Now the woman was a Gentile, of the Syrophoenician race. And she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

27 B ut Jesus said to her, “Let the children be filled first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”

And He was saying to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

28 A nd she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs.”

But she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children’s crumbs.”

29 T hen He said to her, “For this saying go your way; the demon has gone out of your daughter.”

And He said to her, “Because of this answer go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.”

30 A nd when she had come to her house, she found the demon gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed. Jesus Heals a Deaf-Mute

And going back to her home, she found the child lying on the bed, the demon having left.

31 A gain, departing from the region of Tyre and Sidon, He came through the midst of the region of Decapolis to the Sea of Galilee.

Again He went out from the region of Tyre, and came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, within the region of Decapolis.

32 T hen they brought to Him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they begged Him to put His hand on him.

They brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they implored Him to lay His hand on him.

33 A nd He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers in his ears, and He spat and touched his tongue.

Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva;

34 T hen, looking up to heaven, He sighed, and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.”

and looking up to heaven with a deep sigh, He said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!”

35 I mmediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly.

And his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was removed, and he began speaking plainly.

36 T hen He commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more He commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it.

And He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He ordered them, the more widely they continued to proclaim it.

37 A nd they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”

They were utterly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well; He makes even the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”
