1 A nd Jesus was walking after these things in Galilee, for he did not wish to walk in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him,

Après cela, Jésus parcourait la Galilée, car il ne voulait pas séjourner en Judée, parce que les Juifs cherchaient à le faire mourir.

2 a nd the feast of the Jews was nigh -- that of tabernacles --

Or, la fête des Juifs, la fête des Tabernacles, était proche.

3 h is brethren, therefore, said unto him, `Remove hence, and go away to Judea, that thy disciples also may behold thy works that thou dost;

Et ses frères lui dirent: Pars d'ici, et va en Judée, afin que tes disciples voient aussi les oeuvres que tu fais.

4 f or no one in secret doth anything, and himself seeketh to be in public; if thou dost these things -- manifest thyself to the world;'

Personne n'agit en secret, lorsqu'il désire paraître: si tu fais ces choses, montre-toi toi-même au monde.

5 f or not even were his brethren believing in him.

Car ses frères non plus ne croyaient pas en lui.

6 J esus, therefore, saith to them, `My time is not yet present, but your time is always ready;

Jésus leur dit: Mon temps n'est pas encore venu, mais votre temps est toujours prêt.

7 t he world is not able to hate you, but me it doth hate, because I testify concerning it that its works are evil.

Le monde ne peut vous haïr; moi, il me hait, parce que je rends de lui le témoignage que ses oeuvres sont mauvaises.

8 Y e -- go ye up to this feast; I do not yet go up to this feast, because my time hath not yet been fulfilled;'

Montez, vous, à cette fête; pour moi, je n'y monte point, parce que mon temps n'est pas encore accompli.

9 a nd saying these things to them, he remained in Galilee.

Après leur avoir dit cela, il resta en Galilée.

10 A nd when his brethren went up, then also he himself went up to the feast, not manifestly, but as in secret;

Lorsque ses frères furent montés à la fête, il y monta aussi lui-même, non publiquement, mais comme en secret.

11 t he Jews, therefore, were seeking him, in the feast, and said, `Where is that one?'

Les Juifs le cherchaient pendant la fête, et disaient: Où est-il?

12 a nd there was much murmuring about him among the multitudes, some indeed said -- `He is good;' and others said, `No, but he leadeth astray the multitude;'

Il y avait dans la foule grande rumeur à son sujet. Les uns disaient: C'est un homme de bien. D'autres disaient: Non, il égare la multitude.

13 n o one, however, was speaking freely about him, through fear of the Jews.

Personne, toutefois, ne parlait librement de lui, par crainte des Juifs.

14 A nd it being now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up to the temple, and he was teaching,

Vers le milieu de la fête, Jésus monta au temple. Et il enseignait.

15 a nd the Jews were wondering, saying, `How hath this one known letters -- not having learned?'

Les Juifs s'étonnaient, disant: Comment connaît-il les Écritures, lui qui n'a point étudié?

16 J esus answered them and said, `My teaching is not mine, but His who sent me;

Jésus leur répondit: Ma doctrine n'est pas de moi, mais de celui qui m'a envoyé.

17 i f any one may will to do His will, he shall know concerning the teaching, whether it is of God, or -- I do speak from myself.

Si quelqu'un veut faire sa volonté, il connaîtra si ma doctrine est de Dieu, ou si je parle de mon chef.

18 ` He who is speaking from himself his own glory doth seek, but he who is seeking the glory of him who sent him, this one is true, and unrighteousness is not in him;

Celui qui parle de son chef cherche sa propre gloire; mais celui qui cherche la gloire de celui qui l'a envoyé, celui-là est vrai, et il n'y a point d'injustice en lui.

19 h ath not Moses given you the law? and none of you doth the law; why me do ye seek to kill?'

Moïse ne vous a-t-il pas donné la loi? Et nul de vous n'observe la loi. Pourquoi cherchez-vous à me faire mourir?

20 T he multitude answered and said, `Thou hast a demon, who doth seek to kill thee?'

La foule répondit: Tu as un démon. Qui est-ce qui cherche à te faire mourir?

21 J esus answered and said to them, `One work I did, and ye all wonder,

Jésus leur répondit: J'ai fait une oeuvre, et vous en êtes tous étonnés.

22 b ecause of this, Moses hath given you the circumcision -- not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers -- and on a sabbath ye circumcise a man;

Moïse vous a donné la circoncision, -non qu'elle vienne de Moïse, car elle vient des patriarches, -et vous circoncisez un homme le jour du sabbat.

23 i f a man doth receive circumcision on a sabbath that the law of Moses may not be broken, are ye wroth with me that I made a man all whole on a sabbath?

Si un homme reçoit la circoncision le jour du sabbat, afin que la loi de Moïse ne soit pas violée, pourquoi vous irritez-vous contre moi de ce que j'ai guéri un homme tout entier le jour du sabbat?

24 j udge not according to appearance, but the righteous judgment judge.'

Ne jugez pas selon l'apparence, mais jugez selon la justice.

25 C ertain, therefore, of the Jerusalemites said, `Is not this he whom they are seeking to kill?

Quelques habitants de Jérusalem disaient: N'est-ce pas là celui qu'ils cherchent à faire mourir?

26 a nd, lo, he doth speak freely, and they say nothing to him; did the rulers at all know truly that this is truly the Christ?

Et voici, il parle librement, et ils ne lui disent rien! Est-ce que vraiment les chefs auraient reconnu qu'il est le Christ?

27 b ut this one -- we have known whence he is; and the Christ, when he doth come, no one doth know whence he is.'

Cependant celui-ci, nous savons d'où il est; mais le Christ, quand il viendra, personne ne saura d'où il est.

28 J esus cried, therefore, in the temple, teaching and saying, `Ye have both known me, and ye have known whence I am; and I have not come of myself, but He who sent me is true, whom ye have not known;

Et Jésus, enseignant dans le temple, s'écria: Vous me connaissez, et vous savez d'où je suis! Je ne suis pas venu de moi-même: mais celui qui m'a envoyé est vrai, et vous ne le connaissez pas.

29 a nd I have known Him, because I am from Him, and He did send me.'

Moi, je le connais; car je viens de lui, et c'est lui qui m'a envoyé.

30 T hey were seeking, therefore, to seize him, and no one laid the hand on him, because his hour had not yet come,

Ils cherchaient donc à se saisir de lui, et personne ne mit la main sur lui, parce que son heure n'était pas encore venue.

31 a nd many out of the multitude did believe in him, and said -- `The Christ -- when he may come -- will he do more signs than these that this one did?'

Plusieurs parmi la foule crurent en lui, et ils disaient: Le Christ, quand il viendra, fera-t-il plus de miracles que n'en a fait celui-ci?

32 T he Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers that they may take him;

Les pharisiens entendirent la foule murmurant de lui ces choses. Alors les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens envoyèrent des huissiers pour le saisir.

33 J esus, therefore, said to them, `Yet a little time I am with you, and I go away unto Him who sent me;

Jésus dit: Je suis encore avec vous pour un peu de temps, puis je m'en vais vers celui qui m'a envoyé.

34 y e will seek me, and ye shall not find; and where I am, ye are not able to come.'

Vous me chercherez et vous ne me trouverez pas, et vous ne pouvez venir où je serai.

35 T he Jews, therefore, said among themselves, `Whither is this one about to go that we shall not find him? -- to the dispersion of the Greeks is he about to go? and to teach the Greeks;

Sur quoi les Juifs dirent entre eux: Où ira-t-il, que nous ne le trouvions pas? Ira-t-il parmi ceux qui sont dispersés chez les Grecs, et enseignera-t-il les Grecs?

36 w hat is this word that he said, Ye will seek me, and ye shall not find? and, Where I am, ye are not able to come?'

Que signifie cette parole qu'il a dite: Vous me chercherez et vous ne me trouverez pas, et vous ne pouvez venir où je serai?

37 A nd in the last, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, `If any one doth thirst, let him come unto me and drink;

Le dernier jour, le grand jour de la fête, Jésus, se tenant debout, s'écria: Si quelqu'un a soif, qu'il vienne à moi, et qu'il boive.

38 h e who is believing in me, according as the Writing said, Rivers out of his belly shall flow of living water;'

Celui qui croit en moi, des fleuves d'eau vive couleront de son sein, comme dit l'Écriture.

39 a nd this he said of the Spirit, which those believing in him were about to receive; for not yet was the Holy Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Il dit cela de l'Esprit que devaient recevoir ceux qui croiraient en lui; car l'Esprit n'était pas encore, parce que Jésus n'avait pas encore été glorifié.

40 M any, therefore out of the multitude, having heard the word, said, `This is truly the Prophet;'

Des gens de la foule, ayant entendu ces paroles, disaient: Celui-ci est vraiment le prophète.

41 o thers said, `This is the Christ;' and others said, `Why, out of Galilee doth the Christ come?

D'autres disaient: C'est le Christ. Et d'autres disaient: Est-ce bien de la Galilée que doit venir le Christ?

42 D id not the Writing say, that out of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem -- the village where David was -- the Christ doth come?'

L'Écriture ne dit-elle pas que c'est de la postérité de David, et du village de Bethléhem, où était David, que le Christ doit venir?

43 A division, therefore, arose among the multitude because of him.

Il y eut donc, à cause de lui, division parmi la foule.

44 A nd certain of them were willing to seize him, but no one laid hands on him;

Quelques-uns d'entre eux voulaient le saisir, mais personne ne mit la main sur lui.

45 t he officers came, therefore, unto the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, `Wherefore did ye not bring him?'

Ainsi les huissiers retournèrent vers les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens. Et ceux-ci leur dirent: Pourquoi ne l'avez-vous pas amené?

46 T he officers answered, `Never so spake man -- as this man.'

Les huissiers répondirent: Jamais homme n'a parlé comme cet homme.

47 T he Pharisees, therefore, answered them, `Have ye also been led astray?

Les pharisiens leur répliquèrent: Est-ce que vous aussi, vous avez été séduits?

48 d id any one out of the rulers believe in him? or out of the Pharisees?

Y a-t-il quelqu'un des chefs ou des pharisiens qui ait cru en lui?

49 b ut this multitude, that is not knowing the law, is accursed.'

Mais cette foule qui ne connaît pas la loi, ce sont des maudits!

50 N icodemus saith unto them -- he who came by night unto him -- being one of them,

Nicodème, qui était venu de nuit vers Jésus, et qui était l'un d'entre eux, leur dit:

51 ` Doth our law judge the man, if it may not hear from him first, and know what he doth?'

Notre loi condamne-t-elle un homme avant qu'on l'entende et qu'on sache ce qu'il a fait?

52 T hey answered and said to him, `Art thou also out of Galilee? search and see, that a prophet out of Galilee hath not risen;'

Ils lui répondirent: Es-tu aussi Galiléen? Examine, et tu verras que de la Galilée il ne sort point de prophète.

53 a nd each one went on to his house, but Jesus went on to the mount of the Olives.

Et chacun s'en retourna dans sa maison.
