1 A nd the ark of Jehovah is in the field of the Philistines seven months,

L'arche de l'Éternel fut sept mois dans le pays des Philistins.

2 a nd the Philistines call for priests and for diviners, saying, `What do we do to the ark of Jehovah? let us know wherewith we send it to its place?'

Et les Philistins appelèrent les prêtres et les devins, et ils dirent: Que ferons-nous de l'arche de l'Éternel? Faites-nous connaître de quelle manière nous devons la renvoyer en son lieu.

3 A nd they say, `If ye are sending away the ark of the God of Israel, ye do not send it away empty; for ye do certainly send back to Him a guilt-offering; then ye are healed, and it hath been known to you why His hand doth not turn aside from you.'

Ils répondirent: Si vous renvoyez l'arche du Dieu d'Israël, ne la renvoyez point à vide, mais faites à Dieu un sacrifice de culpabilité; alors vous guérirez, et vous saurez pourquoi sa main ne s'est pas retirée de dessus vous.

4 A nd they say, `What the guilt-offering which we send back to Him?' and they say, `The number of the princes of the Philistines -- five golden emerods, and five golden mice -- for one plague to you all, and to your princes,

Les Philistins dirent: Quelle offrande lui ferons-nous? Ils répondirent: Cinq tumeurs d'or et cinq souris d'or, d'après le nombre des princes des Philistins, car une même plaie a été sur vous tous et sur vos princes.

5 a nd ye have made images of your emerods, and images of your mice that are corrupting the land, and have given honour to the God of Israel; it may be He doth lighten His hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land;

Faites des figures de vos tumeurs et des figures de vos souris qui ravagent le pays, et donnez gloire au Dieu d'Israël: peut-être cessera-t-il d'appesantir sa main sur vous, sur vos dieux, et sur votre pays.

6 a nd why do ye harden your heart as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their heart? do they not -- when He hath rolled Himself upon them -- send them away, and they go?

Pourquoi endurciriez-vous votre coeur, comme les Égyptiens et Pharaon ont endurci leur coeur? N'exerça-t-il pas ses châtiments sur eux, et ne laissèrent-ils pas alors partir les enfants d'Israël?

7 ` And now, take and make one new cart, and two suckling kine, on which a yoke hath not gone up, and ye have bound the kine in the cart, and caused their young ones to turn back from after them to the house,

Maintenant, faites un char tout neuf, et prenez deux vaches qui allaitent et qui n'aient point porté le joug; attelez les vaches au char, et ramenez à la maison leurs petits qui sont derrière elles.

8 a nd ye have taken the ark of Jehovah, and put it on the cart, and the vessels of gold which ye have returned to Him -- a guilt-offering -- ye put in a coffer on its side, and have sent it away, and it hath gone;

Vous prendrez l'arche de l'Éternel, et vous la mettrez sur le char; vous placerez à côté d'elle, dans un coffre, les objets d'or que vous donnez à l'Éternel en offrande pour le péché; puis vous la renverrez, et elle partira.

9 a nd ye have seen, if the way of its own border it goeth up to Beth-Shemesh -- He hath done to us this great evil; and if not, then we have known that His hand hath not come against us; an accident it hath been to us.'

Suivez-la du regard: si elle monte par le chemin de sa frontière vers Beth Schémesch, c'est l'Éternel qui nous a fait ce grand mal; sinon, nous saurons que ce n'est pas sa main qui nous a frappés, mais que cela nous est arrivé par hasard.

10 A nd the men do so, and take two suckling kine, and bind them in the cart, and their young ones they have shut up in the house;

Ces gens firent ainsi. Ils prirent deux vaches qui allaitaient et les attelèrent au char, et ils enfermèrent les petits dans la maison.

11 a nd they place the ark of Jehovah upon the cart, and the coffer, and the golden mice, and the images of their emerods.

Ils mirent sur le char l'arche de l'Éternel, et le coffre avec les souris d'or et les figures de leurs tumeurs.

12 A nd the kine go straight in the way, on the way to Beth-Shemesh, in one highway they have gone, going and lowing, and have not turned aside right or left; and the princes of the Philistines are going after them unto the border of Beth-Shemesh.

Les vaches prirent directement le chemin de Beth Schémesch; elles suivirent toujours la même route en mugissant, et elles ne se détournèrent, ni à droite ni à gauche. Les princes des Philistins allèrent derrière elles jusqu'à la frontière de Beth Schémesch.

13 A nd the Beth-Shemeshites are reaping their wheat-harvest in the valley, and they lift up their eyes, and see the ark, and rejoice to see.

Les habitants de Beth Schémesch moissonnaient les blés dans la vallée; ils levèrent les yeux, aperçurent l'arche, et se réjouirent en la voyant.

14 A nd the cart hath come in unto the field of Joshua the Beth-Shemeshite, and standeth there, and there a great stone, and they cleave the wood of the cart, and the kine they have caused to ascend -- a burnt-offering to Jehovah.

Le char arriva dans le champ de Josué de Beth Schémesch, et s'y arrêta. Il y avait là une grande pierre. On fendit le bois du char, et l'on offrit les vaches en holocauste à l'Éternel.

15 A nd the Levites have taken down the ark of Jehovah, and the coffer which with it, in which the vessels of gold, and place on the great stone; and the men of Beth-Shemesh have caused to ascend burnt-offerings and sacrifice sacrifices in that day to Jehovah;

Les Lévites descendirent l'arche de l'Éternel, et le coffre qui était à côté d'elle et qui contenait les objets d'or; et ils posèrent le tout sur la grande pierre. Les gens de Beth Schémesch offrirent en ce jour des holocaustes et des sacrifices à l'Éternel.

16 a nd the five princes of the Philistines have seen, and turn back Ekron, on that day.

Les cinq princes des Philistins, après avoir vu cela, retournèrent à Ékron le même jour.

17 A nd these the golden emerods which the Philistines have sent back -- a guilt-offering to Jehovah: for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;

Voici les tumeurs d'or que les Philistins donnèrent à l'Éternel en offrande pour le péché: une pour Asdod, une pour Gaza, une pour Askalon, une pour Gath, une pour Ékron.

18 a nd the golden mice -- the number of all the cities of the Philistines -- for the five princes, from the fenced city even unto the hamlet of the villages, even unto the great meadow on which they placed the ark of Jehovah -- unto this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-Shemeshite.

Il y avait aussi des souris d'or selon le nombre de toutes les villes des Philistins, appartenant aux cinq chefs, tant des villes fortifiées que des villages sans murailles. C'est ce qu'atteste la grande pierre sur laquelle on déposa l'arche de l'Éternel, et qui est encore aujourd'hui dans le champ de Josué de Beth Schémesch.

19 A nd He smiteth among the men of Beth-Shemesh, for they looked into the ark of Jehovah, yea, He smiteth among the people seventy men -- fifty chief men; and the people mourn, because Jehovah smote among the people -- a great smiting.

L'Éternel frappa les gens de Beth Schémesch, lorsqu'ils regardèrent l'arche de l'Éternel; il frappa soixante-dix hommes parmi le peuple. Et le peuple fut dans la désolation, parce que l'Éternel l'avait frappé d'une grande plaie.

20 A nd the men of Beth-Shemesh say, `Who is able to stand before Jehovah, this holy God? and unto whom doth He go up from us?'

Les gens de Beth Schémesch dirent: Qui peut subsister en présence de l'Éternel, de ce Dieu saint? Et vers qui l'arche doit-elle monter, en s'éloignant de nous?

21 A nd they send messengers unto the inhabitants of Kirjath-Jearim, saying, `The Philistines have sent back the ark of Jehovah; come down, take it up unto you.'

Ils envoyèrent des messagers aux habitants de Kirjath Jearim, pour leur dire: Les Philistins ont ramené l'arche de l'Éternel; descendez, et faites-la monter vers vous.
