1 A nd Jesus answering, again spake to them in similes, saying,

Jésus, prenant la parole, leur parla de nouveau en parabole, et il dit:

2 ` The reign of the heavens was likened to a man, a king, who made marriage-feasts for his son,

Le royaume des cieux est semblable à un roi qui fit des noces pour son fils.

3 a nd he sent forth his servants to call those having been called to the marriage-feasts, and they were not willing to come.

Il envoya ses serviteurs appeler ceux qui étaient invités aux noces; mais ils ne voulurent pas venir.

4 ` Again he sent forth other servants, saying, Say to those who have been called: Lo, my dinner I prepared, my oxen and the fatlings have been killed, and all things ready, come ye to the marriage-feasts;

Il envoya encore d'autres serviteurs, en disant: Dites aux conviés: Voici, j'ai préparé mon festin; mes boeufs et mes bêtes grasses sont tués, tout est prêt, venez aux noces.

5 a nd they, having disregarded, went away, the one to his own field, and the other to his merchandise;

Mais, sans s'inquiéter de l'invitation, ils s'en allèrent, celui-ci à son champ, celui-là à son trafic;

6 a nd the rest, having laid hold on his servants, did insult and slay.

et les autres se saisirent des serviteurs, les outragèrent et les tuèrent.

7 ` And the king having heard, was wroth, and having sent forth his soldiers, he destroyed those murderers, and their city he set on fire;

Le roi fut irrité; il envoya ses troupes, fit périr ces meurtriers, et brûla leur ville.

8 t hen saith he to his servants, The marriage-feast indeed is ready, and those called were not worthy,

Alors il dit à ses serviteurs: Les noces sont prêtes; mais les conviés n'en étaient pas dignes.

9 b e going, then, on to the cross-ways, and as many as ye may find, call ye to the marriage-feasts.

Allez donc dans les carrefours, et appelez aux noces tous ceux que vous trouverez.

10 ` And those servants, having gone forth to the ways, did gather all, as many as they found, both bad and good, and the marriage-feast apartment was filled with those reclining.

Ces serviteurs allèrent dans les chemins, rassemblèrent tous ceux qu'ils trouvèrent, méchants et bons, et la salle des noces fut pleine de convives.

11 ` And the king having come in to view those reclining, saw there a man not clothed with clothing of the marriage-feast,

Le roi entra pour voir ceux qui étaient à table, et il aperçut là un homme qui n'avait pas revêtu un habit de noces.

12 a nd he saith to him, Comrade, how didst thou come in hither, not having clothing of the marriage-feast? and he was speechless.

Il lui dit: Mon ami, comment es-tu entré ici sans avoir un habit de noces? Cet homme eut la bouche fermée.

13 ` Then said the king to the ministrants, Having bound his feet and hands, take him up and cast forth to the outer darkness, there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth;

Alors le roi dit aux serviteurs: Liez-lui les pieds et les mains, et jetez-le dans les ténèbres du dehors, où il y aura des pleurs et des grincements de dents.

14 f or many are called, and few chosen.'

Car il y a beaucoup d'appelés, mais peu d'élus.

15 T hen the Pharisees having gone, took counsel how they might ensnare him in words,

Alors les pharisiens allèrent se consulter sur les moyens de surprendre Jésus par ses propres paroles.

16 a nd they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, `Teacher, we have known that thou art true, and the way of God in truth thou dost teach, and thou art not caring for any one, for thou dost not look to the face of men;

Ils envoyèrent auprès de lui leurs disciples avec les hérodiens, qui dirent: Maître, nous savons que tu es vrai, et que tu enseignes la voie de Dieu selon la vérité, sans t'inquiéter de personne, car tu ne regardes pas à l'apparence des hommes.

17 t ell us, therefore, what dost thou think? is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?'

Dis-nous donc ce qu'il t'en semble: est-il permis, ou non, de payer le tribut à César?

18 A nd Jesus having known their wickedness, said, `Why me do ye tempt, hypocrites?

Jésus, connaissant leur méchanceté, répondit: Pourquoi me tentez-vous, hypocrites?

19 s how me the tribute-coin?' and they brought to him a denary;

Montrez-moi la monnaie avec laquelle on paie le tribut. Et ils lui présentèrent un denier.

20 a nd he saith to them, `Whose this image and the inscription?'

Il leur demanda: De qui sont cette effigie et cette inscription?

21 t hey say to him, `Caesar's;' then saith he to them, `Render therefore the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God;'

De César, lui répondirent-ils. Alors il leur dit: Rendez donc à César ce qui est à César, et à Dieu ce qui est à Dieu.

22 a nd having heard they wondered, and having left him they went away.

Étonnés de ce qu'ils entendaient, ils le quittèrent, et s'en allèrent.

23 I n that day there came near to him Sadducees, who are saying there is not a rising again, and they questioned him, saying,

Le même jour, les sadducéens, qui disent qu'il n'y a point de résurrection, vinrent auprès de Jésus, et lui firent cette question:

24 ` Teacher, Moses said, If any one may die not having children, his brother shall marry his wife, and shall raise up seed to his brother.

Maître, Moïse a dit: Si quelqu'un meurt sans enfants, son frère épousera sa veuve, et suscitera une postérité à son frère.

25 ` And there were with us seven brothers, and the first having married did die, and not having seed, he left his wife to his brother;

Or, il y avait parmi nous sept frères. Le premier se maria, et mourut; et, comme il n'avait pas d'enfants, il laissa sa femme à son frère.

26 i n like manner also the second, and the third, unto the seventh,

Il en fut de même du second, puis du troisième, jusqu'au septième.

27 a nd last of all died also the woman;

Après eux tous, la femme mourut aussi.

28 t herefore in the rising again, of which of the seven shall she be wife -- for all had her?'

A la résurrection, duquel des sept sera-t-elle donc la femme? Car tous l'ont eue.

29 A nd Jesus answering said to them, `Ye go astray, not knowing the Writings, nor the power of God;

Jésus leur répondit: Vous êtes dans l'erreur, parce que vous ne comprenez ni les Écritures, ni la puissance de Dieu.

30 f or in the rising again they do not marry, nor are they given in marriage, but are as messengers of God in heaven.

Car, à la résurrection, les hommes ne prendront point de femmes, ni les femmes de maris, mais ils seront comme les anges de Dieu dans le ciel.

31 ` And concerning the rising again of the dead, did ye not read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,

Pour ce qui est de la résurrection des morts, n'avez-vous pas lu ce que Dieu vous a dit:

32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not a God of dead men, but of living.'

Je suis le Dieu d'Abraham, le Dieu d'Isaac, et le Dieu de Jacob? Dieu n'est pas Dieu des morts, mais des vivants.

33 A nd having heard, the multitudes were astonished at his teaching;

La foule, qui écoutait, fut frappée de l'enseignement de Jésus.

34 a nd the Pharisees, having heard that he did silence the Sadducees, were gathered together unto him;

Les pharisiens, ayant appris qu'il avait réduit au silence les sadducéens, se rassemblèrent,

35 a nd one of them, a lawyer, did question, tempting him, and saying,

et l'un d'eux, docteur de la loi, lui fit cette question, pour l'éprouver:

36 ` Teacher, which the great command in the Law?'

Maître, quel est le plus grand commandement de la loi?

37 A nd Jesus said to him, `Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thine understanding --

Jésus lui répondit: Tu aimeras le Seigneur, ton Dieu, de tout ton coeur, de toute ton âme, et de toute ta pensée.

38 t his is a first and great command;

C'est le premier et le plus grand commandement.

39 a nd the second like to it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself;

Et voici le second, qui lui est semblable: Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même.

40 o n these -- the two commands -- all the law and the prophets do hang.'

De ces deux commandements dépendent toute la loi et les prophètes.

41 A nd the Pharisees having been gathered together, Jesus did question them,

Comme les pharisiens étaient assemblés, Jésus les interrogea,

42 s aying, `What do ye think concerning the Christ? of whom is he son?' They say to him, `Of David.'

en disant: Que pensez-vous du Christ? De qui est-il fils? Ils lui répondirent: De David.

43 H e saith to them, `How then doth David in the Spirit call him lord, saying,

Et Jésus leur dit: Comment donc David, animé par l'Esprit, l'appelle-t-il Seigneur, lorsqu'il dit:

44 T he Lord said to my lord, Sit at my right hand, till I may make thine enemies thy footstool?

Le Seigneur a dit à mon Seigneur: Assieds-toi à ma droite, Jusqu'à ce que je fasse de tes ennemis ton marchepied?

45 I f then David doth call him lord, how is he his son?'

Si donc David l'appelle Seigneur, comment est-il son fils?

46 A nd no one was able to answer him a word, nor durst any from that day question him any more.

Nul ne put lui répondre un mot. Et, depuis ce jour, personne n'osa plus lui proposer des questions.
