1 A nd it cometh to pass afterwards, that David asketh at Jehovah, saying, `Do I go up into one of the cities of Judah?' and Jehovah saith unto him, `Go up.' And David saith, `Whither do I go up?' and He saith, `To Hebron.'

Après cela, David consulta l'Éternel, en disant: Monterai-je dans une des villes de Juda? L'Éternel lui répondit: Monte. David dit: Où monterai-je? Et l'Éternel répondit: A Hébron.

2 A nd David goeth up thither, and also his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail wife of Nabal the Carmelite;

David y monta, avec ses deux femmes, Achinoam de Jizreel, et Abigaïl de Carmel, femme de Nabal.

3 a nd his men who with him hath David brought up -- a man and his household -- and they dwell in the cities of Hebron.

David fit aussi monter les gens qui étaient auprès de lui, chacun avec sa maison; et ils habitèrent dans les villes d'Hébron.

4 A nd the men of Judah come, and anoint there David for king over the house of Judah; and they declare to David, saying, `The men of Jabesh-Gilead they who buried Saul.'

Les hommes de Juda vinrent, et là ils oignirent David pour roi sur la maison de Juda. On informa David que c'étaient les gens de Jabès en Galaad qui avaient enterré Saül.

5 A nd David sendeth messengers unto the men of Jabesh-Gilead, and saith unto them, `Blessed ye of Jehovah, in that ye have done this kindness with your lord, with Saul, that ye bury him.

David envoya des messagers aux gens de Jabès en Galaad, pour leur dire: Soyez bénis de l'Éternel, puisque vous avez ainsi montré de la bienveillance envers Saül, votre maître, et que vous l'avez enterré.

6 ` And, now, Jehovah doth with you kindness and truth, and also, I do with you this good because ye have done this thing;

Et maintenant, que l'Éternel use envers vous de bonté et de fidélité. Moi aussi je vous ferai du bien, parce que vous avez agi de la sorte.

7 a nd now, are your hands strong, and be ye for sons of valour, for your lord Saul. dead, and also -- me have the house of Judah anointed for king over them.'

Que vos mains se fortifient, et soyez de vaillants hommes; car votre maître Saül est mort, et c'est moi que la maison de Juda a oint pour roi sur elle.

8 A nd Abner, son of Ner, head of the host which Saul hath, hath taken Ish-Bosheth, son of Saul, and causeth him to pass over to Mahanaim,

Cependant Abner, fils de Ner, chef de l'armée de Saül, prit Isch Boscheth, fils de Saül, et le fit passer à Mahanaïm.

9 a nd causeth him to reign over Gilead, and over the Ashurite, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over Israel -- all of it.

Il l'établit roi sur Galaad, sur les Gueschuriens, sur Jizreel, sur Éphraïm, sur Benjamin, sur tout Israël.

10 A son of forty years, Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, in his reigning over Israel, and two years he hath reigned, only the house of Judah have been after David.

Isch Boscheth, fils de Saül, était âgé de quarante ans, lorsqu'il devint roi d'Israël, et il régna deux ans. Il n'y eut que la maison de Juda qui resta attachée à David.

11 A nd the number of the days that David hath been king in Hebron, over the house of Judah, is seven years and six months.

Le temps pendant lequel David régna à Hébron sur la maison de Juda fut de sept ans et six mois.

12 A nd Abner son of Ner goeth out, and servants of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

Abner, fils de Ner, et les gens d'Isch Boscheth, fils de Saül, sortirent de Mahanaïm pour marcher sur Gabaon.

13 A nd Joab son of Zeruiah, and servants of David, have gone out, and they meet by the pool of Gibeon together, and sit down, these by the pool on this, and these by the pool on that.

Joab, fils de Tseruja, et les gens de David, se mirent aussi en marche. Ils se rencontrèrent près de l'étang de Gabaon, et ils s'arrêtèrent les uns en deçà de l'étang, et les autres au delà.

14 A nd Abner saith unto Joab, `Let the youths rise, I pray thee, and they play before us;' and Joab saith, `Let them rise.'

Abner dit à Joab: Que ces jeunes gens se lèvent, et qu'ils se battent devant nous! Joab répondit: Qu'ils se lèvent!

15 A nd they rise and pass over, in number twelve of Benjamin, even of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.

Ils se levèrent et s'avancèrent en nombre égal, douze pour Benjamin et pour Isch Boscheth, fils de Saül, et douze des gens de David.

16 A nd they lay hold, each on the head of his companion, and his sword in the side of his companion, and they fall together, and calleth that place Helkath-Hazzurim, which in Gibeon,

Chacun saisissant son adversaire par la tête lui enfonça son épée dans le flanc, et ils tombèrent tous ensemble. Et l'on donna à ce lieu, qui est près de Gabaon, le nom de Helkath Hatsurim.

17 a nd the battle is very hard on that day, and Abner is smitten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

Il y eut en ce jour un combat très rude, dans lequel Abner et les hommes d'Israël furent battus par les gens de David.

18 A nd there are there three sons of Zeruiah, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel, and Asahel light on his feet, as one of the roes which in the field,

Là se trouvaient les trois fils de Tseruja: Joab, Abischaï et Asaël. Asaël avait les pieds légers comme une gazelle des champs:

19 A nd Asahel pursueth after Abner, and hath not turned aside to go to the right or to the left, from after Abner.

il poursuivit Abner, sans se détourner de lui pour aller à droite ou à gauche.

20 A nd Abner looketh behind him, and saith, `Art thou he -- Asahel?' and he saith, `I.'

Abner regarda derrière lui, et dit: Est-ce toi, Asaël? Et il répondit: C'est moi.

21 A nd Abner saith to him, `Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and seize for thee one of the youths, and take to thee his armour;' and Asahel hath not been willing to turn aside from after him.

Abner lui dit: Tire à droite ou à gauche; saisis-toi de l'un de ces jeunes gens, et prends sa dépouille. Mais Asaël ne voulut point se détourner de lui.

22 A nd Abner addeth again, saying unto Asahel, `Turn thee aside from after me, why do I smite thee to the earth? and how do I lift up my face unto Joab thy brother?'

Abner dit encore à Asaël: Détourne-toi de moi; pourquoi te frapperais-je et t'abattrais-je en terre? comment ensuite lèverais-je le visage devant ton frère Joab?

23 A nd he refuseth to turn aside, and Abner smiteth him with the hinder part of the spear unto the fifth, and the spear cometh out from behind him, and he falleth there, and dieth under it; and it cometh to pass, every one who hath come unto the place where Asahel hath fallen and dieth -- they stand still.

Et Asaël refusa de se détourner. Sur quoi Abner le frappa au ventre avec l'extrémité inférieure de sa lance, et la lance sortit par derrière. Il tomba et mourut sur place. Tous ceux qui arrivaient au lieu où Asaël était tombé mort, s'y arrêtaient.

24 A nd Joab and Abishai pursue after Abner, and the sun hath gone in, and they have come in unto the height of Ammah, which on the front of Giah, the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

Joab et Abischaï poursuivirent Abner, et le soleil se couchait quand ils arrivèrent au coteau d'Amma, qui est en face de Guiach, sur le chemin du désert de Gabaon.

25 A nd the sons of Benjamin gather themselves together after Abner, and become one troop, and stand on the top of a certain height,

Les fils de Benjamin se rallièrent à la suite d'Abner et formèrent un corps, et ils s'arrêtèrent au sommet d'une colline.

26 a nd Abner calleth unto Joab, and saith, `For ever doth the sword consume? hast thou not known that it is bitterness in the latter end? and till when dost thou not say to the people to turn back from after their brethren?'

Abner appela Joab, et dit: L'épée dévorera-t-elle toujours? Ne sais-tu pas qu'il y aura de l'amertume à la fin? Jusques à quand tarderas-tu à dire au peuple de ne plus poursuivre ses frères?

27 A nd Joab saith, `God liveth! for unless thou hadst spoken, surely then from the morning had the people gone up each from after his brother.'

Joab répondit: Dieu est vivant! si tu n'eusses parlé, le peuple n'aurait pas cessé avant le matin de poursuivre ses frères.

28 A nd Joab bloweth with a trumpet, and all the people stand still, and pursue no more after Israel, nor have they added any more to fight.

Et Joab sonna de la trompette, et tout le peuple s'arrêta; ils ne poursuivirent plus Israël, et ils ne continuèrent pas à se battre.

29 A nd Abner and his men have gone through the plain all that night, and pass over the Jordan, and go on all Bithron, and come in to Mahanaim.

Abner et ses gens marchèrent toute la nuit dans la plaine; ils passèrent le Jourdain, traversèrent en entier le Bithron, et arrivèrent à Mahanaïm.

30 A nd Joab hath turned back from after Abner, and gathereth all the people, and there are lacking of the servants of David nineteen men, and Asahel;

Joab revint de la poursuite d'Abner, et rassembla tout le peuple; il manquait dix-neuf hommes des gens de David, et Asaël.

31 a nd the servants of David have smitten of Benjamin, even among the men of Abner, three hundred and sixty men -- they died.

Mais les gens de David avaient frappé à mort trois cent soixante hommes parmi ceux de Benjamin et d'Abner.

32 A nd they lift up Asahel, and bury him in the burying-place of his father, which in Beth-Lehem, and they go all the night -- Joab and his men -- and it is light to them in Hebron.

Ils emportèrent Asaël, et l'enterrèrent dans le sépulcre de son père à Bethléhem. Joab et ses gens marchèrent toute la nuit, et le jour paraissait quand ils furent à Hébron.
