1 C uando los enemigos de los descendientes de Judá y de Benjamín se enteraron de que los israelitas que habían regresado del cautiverio estaban reconstruyendo el templo del Dios de Israel,

Now when the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the people of the exile were building a temple to the Lord God of Israel,

2 f ueron a entrevistarse con Zorobabel y con los jefes de esas familias, y les dijeron: «Queremos ayudarlos en la reconstrucción del templo del Señor, pues también nosotros honramos al mismo Dios, y le hemos ofrecido sacrificios desde cuando Esarjadón era rey de Asiria y nos trajo a estas tierras.»

they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers’ households, and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we, like you, seek your God; and we have been sacrificing to Him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.”

3 P ero Zorobabel, Josué y las demás familias descendientes de Israel, dijeron: «No es conveniente que ustedes y nosotros edifiquemos juntos el templo del Señor. Lo reconstruiremos nosotros, porque así lo ordenó el rey Ciro de Persia.»

But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of fathers’ households of Israel said to them, “ You have nothing in common with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves will together build to the Lord God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia has commanded us.”

4 P ero los que poblaban esas tierras los amenazaron y los llenaron de temor para que no siguieran construyendo.

Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah, and frightened them from building,

5 S obornaron a los consejeros para que se pusieran en su contra, y lograron detener la obra durante el reinado de Ciro y hasta los días del rey Darío de Persia;

and hired counselors against them to frustrate their counsel all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 y cuando Asuero comenzó a reinar, escribieron serias acusaciones contra los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén.

Now in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 T ambién durante el reinado de Artajerjes de Persia, Bislán, Mitrídades, y Tabel y sus compañeros, escribieron al rey una carta en contra de los israelitas. La carta estaba escrita en arameo,

And in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel and the rest of his colleagues wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the text of the letter was written in Aramaic and translated from Aramaic. The Letter to King Artaxerxes

8 d e parte del comandante Rejún y del secretario Simey, al rey Artajerjes, y redactada en contra de los habitantes de Jerusalén.

Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes, as follows—

9 E n esa ocasión escribieron el comandante Rejún y el secretario Simey, y sus demás compañeros, los jueces, gobernadores y oficiales de Persia y de Erec, Babilonia y Susa, es decir, de Elam,

then wrote Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe and the rest of their colleagues, the judges and the lesser governors, the officials, the secretaries, the men of Erech, the Babylonians, the men of Susa, that is, the Elamites,

10 y los otros pueblos que el grande y glorioso Asnapar llevó cautivos para que vivieran en la ciudad de Samaria y en otras provincias al otro lado del río Éufrates.

and the rest of the nations which the great and honorable Osnappar deported and settled in the city of Samaria, and in the rest of the region beyond the River. Now

11 L o que sigue es copia de las acusaciones que recibió el rey, la cual decía: «Al rey Artajerjes. Saludos de sus siervos al otro lado del río Éufrates.

this is the copy of the letter which they sent to him: “To King Artaxerxes: Your servants, the men in the region beyond the River, and now

12 » Su Majestad debe saber que los judíos que salieron de Babilonia y vinieron a Jerusalén han comenzado a reconstruir su rebelde y malvada ciudad, y ya están echando nuevos cimientos y reparando sus murallas.

let it be known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us at Jerusalem; they are rebuilding the rebellious and evil city and are finishing the walls and repairing the foundations.

13 S u Majestad debe también saber que, en caso de que esa ciudad sea reconstruida y sus murallas sean reparadas, ya no pagará tributo ni impuestos ni rentas, con lo que las arcas del reino se verán afectadas.

Now let it be known to the king, that if that city is rebuilt and the walls are finished, they will not pay tribute, custom or toll, and it will damage the revenue of the kings.

14 N osotros, como súbditos del reino, consideramos injusto que Su Majestad sea menospreciada, y por lo tanto creímos conveniente informar de esto a Su Majestad.

Now because we are in the service of the palace, and it is not fitting for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore we have sent and informed the king,

15 O rdene Su Majestad buscar en las memorias de sus antepasados, y podrá comprobar que esta ciudad siempre ha sido rebelde y perjudicial a los reyes y a las provincias del reino. Ya en el pasado se han suscitado rebeliones en ella, por lo cual esa ciudad fue destruida.

so that a search may be made in the record books of your fathers. And you will discover in the record books and learn that that city is a rebellious city and damaging to kings and provinces, and that they have incited revolt within it in past days; therefore that city was laid waste.

16 S epa Su Majestad que, si esta ciudad llega a ser reconstruida y reforzadas sus murallas, la región que está al otro lado del río Éufrates dejará de ser de Su Majestad.»

We inform the king that if that city is rebuilt and the walls finished, as a result you will have no possession in the province beyond the River.” The King Replies and Work Stops

17 L a respuesta del rey fue la siguiente: «Al gobernador Rejún, al secretario Simey, a todos sus compañeros que habitan en Samaria, y a los que están al otro lado del río Éufrates. Paz y prosperidad.

Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the commander, to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their colleagues who live in Samaria and in the rest of the provinces beyond the River: “Peace. And now

18 » La carta que de ustedes recibí me fue leída con toda claridad.

the document which you sent to us has been translated and read before me.

19 H abiendo dado la orden de investigar, se ha hallado que, en efecto, esa ciudad se ha rebelado en el pasado contra los reyes, y que aun entre ellos mismos se suscitan revueltas.

A decree has been issued by me, and a search has been made and it has been discovered that that city has risen up against the kings in past days, that rebellion and revolt have been perpetrated in it,

20 T ambién se ha hallado que hubo allí reyes poderosos que dominaron todo el territorio al otro lado del río Éufrates, y que se les pagaba tributo, impuestos y rentas.

that mighty kings have ruled over Jerusalem, governing all the provinces beyond the River, and that tribute, custom and toll were paid to them.

21 » Por tanto, ordenen a esos hombres suspender la reconstrucción de la ciudad, hasta nuevas órdenes de mi parte.

So, now issue a decree to make these men stop work, that this city may not be rebuilt until a decree is issued by me.

22 P ongan todo su empeño en cumplir mis órdenes, para evitar mayores daños al reino.»

Beware of being negligent in carrying out this matter; why should damage increase to the detriment of the kings?”

23 C uando la carta del rey Artajerjes fue leída en presencia de Rejún y de su secretario Simey, y de sus compañeros, éstos fueron inmediatamente a Jerusalén y con lujo de violencia obligaron a los judíos a detener las obras.

Then as soon as the copy of King Artaxerxes’ document was read before Rehum and Shimshai the scribe and their colleagues, they went in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews and stopped them by force of arms.

24 F ue así como la reconstrucción del templo de Jerusalén se suspendió hasta el segundo año del reinado del rey Darío de Persia.

Then work on the house of God in Jerusalem ceased, and it was stopped until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
