1 T hen the people of Israel traveled on and set up their tents in the plains of Moab on the other side of the Jordan beside Jericho.

Partieron los hijos de Israel, y acamparon en los campos de Moab junto al Jordán, frente a Jericó.

2 N ow Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

Y vio Balac hijo de Zipor todo lo que Israel había hecho al amorreo.

3 S o Moab was filled with much fear because of the people, for they were many. Moab was very afraid of the people of Israel.

Y Moab tuvo gran temor a causa del pueblo, porque era mucho; y se angustió Moab a causa de los hijos de Israel.

4 A nd Moab said to the leaders of Midian, “Now these people will take away everything around us like the bull eats up the grass of the field.” Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

Y dijo Moab a los ancianos de Madián: Ahora lamerá esta gente todos nuestros contornos, como lame el buey la grama del campo. Y Balac hijo de Zipor era entonces rey de Moab.

5 S o he sent men to Balaam the son of Beor, at Pethor, which is near the River in the land of the children of his people. They said to him, “See, a people came out of Egypt. See, they cover the land, and they are living beside me.

Por tanto, envió mensajeros a Balaam hijo de Beor, en Petor, que está junto al río en la tierra de los hijos de su pueblo, para que lo llamasen, diciendo: Un pueblo ha salido de Egipto, y he aquí cubre la haz de la tierra, y habita delante de mí.

6 N ow come, I beg you. Curse this people for me, because they are too strong for me. Then I may be able to win the battle against them and send them out of the land. For I know that good will come to the one you pray for, and trouble will come to the one you curse.”

Ven, pues, ahora, te ruego; maldíceme este pueblo, porque es más fuerte que yo; quizá yo pueda herirlo y echarlo de la tierra; pues yo sé que el que tú bendigas será bendito, y el que tú maldigas será maldito.

7 S o the leaders of Moab and the leaders of Midian left with the pay in their hand for the one who tells what will happen in the future. When they came to Balaam, they told him Balak’s words.

Fueron los ancianos de Moab y los ancianos de Madián con las dádivas de adivinación en su mano, y llegaron a Balaam y le dijeron las palabras de Balac.

8 B alaam said to them, “Stay here tonight. I will bring word to you as the Lord may speak to me.” So the leaders of Moab stayed with Balaam.

Él les dijo: Reposad aquí esta noche, y yo os daré respuesta según Jehová me hable. Así los príncipes de Moab se quedaron con Balaam.

9 T hen God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?”

Y vino Dios a Balaam, y le dijo: ¿Qué varones son estos que están contigo?

10 B alaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent word to me, saying,

Y Balaam respondió a Dios: Balac hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab, ha enviado a decirme:

11 ‘ See, the people who came out of Egypt cover the land. Now come, curse them for me. Then I may be able to fight against them and send them away.’”

He aquí, este pueblo que ha salido de Egipto cubre la faz de la tierra; ven, pues, ahora, y maldícemelo; quizá podré pelear contra él y echarlo.

12 G od said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. Do not curse the people, for I have decided that good would come to them.”

Entonces dijo Dios a Balaam: No vayas con ellos, ni maldigas al pueblo, porque bendito es.

13 S o Balaam got up in the morning and said to Balak’s leaders, “Return to your land. For the Lord will not let me go with you.”

Así Balaam se levantó por la mañana y dijo a los príncipes de Balac: Volveos a vuestra tierra, porque Jehová no me quiere dejar ir con vosotros.

14 S o the leaders of Moab got up and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam would not come with us.”

Y los príncipes de Moab se levantaron, y vinieron a Balac y dijeron: Balaam no quiso venir con nosotros.

15 B alak sent leaders again, more than were sent before, and men who were more important.

Volvió Balac a enviar otra vez más príncipes, y más honorables que los otros;

16 T hey came to Balaam and said to him, “Balak the son of Zippor says, ‘I beg you, let nothing keep you from coming to me.

los cuales vinieron a Balaam, y le dijeron: Así dice Balac, hijo de Zipor: Te ruego que no dejes de venir a mí;

17 I will give you much honor. I will do whatever you tell me. I beg you to come and curse these people for me.’”

porque sin duda te honraré mucho, y haré todo lo que me digas; ven, pues, ahora, maldíceme a este pueblo.

18 B alaam answered and said to Balak’s men, “Balak could give me his house full of silver and gold. But I could not do anything, small or big, against the Word of the Lord my God.

Y Balaam respondió y dijo a los siervos de Balac: Aunque Balac me diese su casa llena de plata y oro, no puedo traspasar la palabra de Jehová mi Dios para hacer cosa chica ni grande.

19 N ow I ask you to stay here tonight. I will find out what else the Lord will say to me.”

Os ruego, por tanto, ahora, que reposéis aquí esta noche, para que yo sepa qué me vuelve a decir Jehová.

20 G od came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men have come to call you, get up and go with them. But do only what I tell you.” Balaam’s Donkey and the Angel

Y vino Dios a Balaam de noche, y le dijo: Si vinieron para llamarte estos hombres, levántate y vete con ellos; pero harás lo que yo te diga. El ángel y la burra de Balaam

21 S o Balaam got up in the morning and got his donkey ready, and went with the leaders of Moab.

Así Balaam se levantó por la mañana, y enalbardó su asna y fue con los príncipes de Moab.

22 B ut God was angry because he was going. The angel of the Lord stood in the way against him. Balaam was sitting on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

Y la ira de Dios se encendió porque él iba; y el Ángel de Jehová se puso en el camino por adversario suyo. Iba, pues, él montado sobre su asna, y con él dos criados suyos.

23 W hen the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way with his sword in his hand, the donkey turned off the road and went into the field. But Balaam hit the donkey to turn her on the road again.

Y el asna vio al Ángel de Jehová, que estaba en el camino con su espada desnuda en su mano; y se apartó el asna del camino, e iba por el campo. Entonces azotó Balaam al asna para hacerla volver al camino.

24 T hen the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path in the grape-field, with a wall on each side.

Pero el Ángel de Jehová se puso en una senda de viñas que tenía pared a un lado y pared al otro.

25 T he donkey saw the angel of the Lord. So she pushed herself against the wall and crushed Balaam’s foot against it, so he hit her again.

Y viendo el asna al Ángel de Jehová, se pegó a la pared, y apretó contra la pared el pie de Balaam; y él volvió a azotarla.

26 T hen the angel of the Lord went farther. He stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn to the right or the left.

Y el Ángel de Jehová pasó más allá, y se puso en una angostura donde no había camino para apartarse ni a derecha ni a izquierda.

27 W hen the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam. So Balaam was angry and hit the donkey with his stick.

Y viendo el asna al Ángel de Jehová, se echó debajo de Balaam; y Balaam se enojó y azotó al asna con un palo.

28 A nd the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you? Why have you hit me these three times?”

Entonces Jehová abrió la boca al asna, la cual dijo a Balaam: ¿Qué te he hecho, que me has azotado estas tres veces?

29 B alaam said to the donkey, “Because you have made a fool of me! If there had been a sword in my hand, I would have killed you by now!”

Y Balaam respondió al asna: Porque te has burlado de mí. ¡Ojalá tuviera espada en mi mano, que ahora te mataría!

30 T he donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have traveled all your life to this day? Have I ever done this to you before?” And Balaam said, “No.”

Y el asna dijo a Balaam: ¿No soy yo tu asna? Sobre mí has cabalgado desde que tú me tienes hasta este día; ¿he acostumbrado hacerlo así contigo? Y él respondió: No.

31 T hen the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way with his sword in his hand. And he bowed to the ground.

Entonces Jehová abrió los ojos de Balaam, y vio al Ángel de Jehová que estaba en el camino, y tenía su espada desnuda en su mano. Y Balaam hizo reverencia, y se inclinó sobre su rostro.

32 T he angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you hit your donkey these three times? See, I have come out against you, because your way was against me.

Y el Ángel de Jehová le dijo: ¿Por qué has azotado tu asna estas tres veces? He aquí yo he salido para resistirte, porque tu camino es perverso delante de mí.

33 B ut the donkey saw me and turned from me these three times. If she had not turned from me, for sure I would have killed you, and let her live.”

El asna me ha visto, y se ha apartado luego de delante de mí estas tres veces; y si de mí no se hubiera apartado, yo también ahora te mataría a ti, y a ella dejaría viva.

34 B alaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned. For I did not know that you were standing in the way against me. But now, if it does not please you, I will turn back.”

Entonces Balaam dijo al Ángel de Jehová: He pecado, porque no sabía que tú te ponías delante de mí en el camino; mas ahora, si te parece mal, yo me volveré.

35 T he angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men. But speak only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with the leaders of Balak.

Y el Ángel de Jehová dijo a Balaam: Ve con esos hombres; pero la palabra que yo te diga, esa hablarás. Así Balaam fue con los príncipes de Balac.

36 B alak heard that Balaam was coming. He went out to meet him at the city of Moab, on the Arnon, at the far side of the country.

Oyendo Balac que Balaam venía, salió a recibirlo a la ciudad de Moab, que está junto al límite de Arnón, que está al extremo de su territorio.

37 B alak said to Balaam, “Did I not send men to tell you to come? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to honor you?”

Y Balac dijo a Balaam: ¿No envié yo a llamarte? ¿Por qué no has venido a mí? ¿No puedo yo honrarte?

38 B alaam said to Balak, “See, I have come to you! Am I able to speak anything at all? The Word that God puts in my mouth is what I must speak.”

Balaam respondió a Balac: He aquí yo he venido a ti; mas ¿podré ahora hablar alguna cosa? La palabra que Dios ponga en mi boca, esa hablaré.

39 T hen Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriathhuzoth.

Y fue Balaam con Balac, y vinieron a Quiryat-huzot.

40 B alak killed bulls and sheep on the altar in worship, and sent some to Balaam and the leaders who were with him.

Y Balac hizo matar bueyes y ovejas, y envió a Balaam, y a los príncipes que estaban con él. Balaam bendice a Israel

41 T he next morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the high places of Baal. From there he saw part of the people of Israel.

El día siguiente, Balac tomó a Balaam y lo hizo subir a Bamot-baal, y desde allí vio el extremo más inmediato del campamento de Israel.
