1 W hen the people saw that Moses was staying a long time before coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron, and said, “Come, make a god for us who will go in front of us. For we do not know what has become of Moses, the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt.”

Viendo el pueblo que Moisés tardaba en descender del monte, se acercaron entonces a Aarón, y le dijeron: Levántate, haznos dioses que vayan delante de nosotros; porque a este Moisés, el varón que nos sacó de la tierra de Egipto, no sabemos qué le haya acontecido.

2 A aron said to them, “Take the objects of gold from the ears of your wives, your sons and your daughters, and bring them to me.”

Y Aarón les dijo: Apartad los zarcillos de oro que están en las orejas de vuestras mujeres, de vuestros hijos y de vuestras hijas, y traédmelos.

3 S o all the people took the gold objects from their ears and brought them to Aaron.

Entonces todo el pueblo apartó los zarcillos de oro que tenían en sus orejas, y los trajeron a Aarón;

4 H e took the gold from their hands, worked on it with a sharp tool, and by melting it, made it into a calf. Then they said, “This is your god, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.”

y él los tomó de las manos de ellos, y le dio forma con buril, e hizo de ello un becerro de fundición. Entonces dijeron: Israel, estos son tus dioses, que te sacaron de la tierra de Egipto.

5 W hen Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of it. Aaron said to all the people, “Tomorrow will be a special supper to the Lord.”

Y viendo esto Aarón, edificó un altar delante del becerro; y pregonó Aarón, y dijo: Mañana será fiesta para Jehová.

6 S o the next day they got up early and gave burnt gifts and peace gifts. The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to play.

Y al día siguiente madrugaron, y ofrecieron holocaustos, y presentaron ofrendas de paz; y se sentó el pueblo a comer y a beber, y se levantó a regocijarse.

7 T hen the Lord said to Moses, “Go down. For your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, have turned to sin.

Entonces Jehová dijo a Moisés: Anda, desciende, porque tu pueblo que sacaste de la tierra de Egipto se ha corrompido.

8 T hey have been quick to turn aside from the way I have told them. They have melted gold and made a calf for themselves. They have worshiped it, have given gifts to it, and have said, ‘This is your god, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!’”

Pronto se han apartado del camino que yo les mandé; se han hecho un becerro de fundición, y lo han adorado, y le han ofrecido sacrificios, y han dicho: Israel, estos son tus dioses, que te sacaron de la tierra de Egipto.

9 T he Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and see, they are a strong-willed people.

Dijo más Jehová a Moisés: Yo he visto a este pueblo, que por cierto es pueblo de dura cerviz.

10 N ow let Me alone, so My anger may be against them and I may destroy them. But I will make you into a great nation.”

Ahora, pues, déjame que se encienda mi ira en ellos, y los consuma; y de ti yo haré una nación grande. Oración de Moisés

11 T hen Moses begged the Lord his God, saying, “O Lord, why are you very angry against Your people whom You brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and a strong hand?

Entonces Moisés oró en presencia de Jehová su Dios, y dijo: Oh Jehová, ¿por qué se encenderá tu furor contra tu pueblo, que tú sacaste de la tierra de Egipto con gran poder y con mano fuerte?

12 W hy should the Egyptians say, ‘He brought them out to kill them in the mountains and destroy them from the earth’? Turn from Your anger and change Your mind about destroying Your people.

¿Por qué han de hablar los egipcios, diciendo: Para mal los sacó, para matarlos en los montes, y para raerlos de sobre la faz de la tierra? Vuélvete del ardor de tu ira, y arrepiéntete de este mal contra tu pueblo.

13 R emember Abraham, Isaac and Israel, who were your servants. You promised them by Yourself, saying, ‘I will make your children become as many as the stars of the heavens. And I will give all this land I have spoken about to your children. It will be theirs forever.’”

Acuérdate de Abraham, de Isaac y de Israel tus siervos, a los cuales has jurado por ti mismo, y les has dicho: Yo multiplicaré vuestra descendencia como las estrellas del cielo; y daré a vuestra descendencia toda esta tierra de que he hablado, y la tomarán por heredad para siempre.

14 S o the Lord changed His mind about the things He said He would do to His people.

Entonces Jehová se arrepintió del mal que dijo que había de hacer a su pueblo.

15 T hen Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two stone writings of the Law in his hand. The stones were written on both sides, on one side and the other.

Y volvió Moisés y descendió del monte, trayendo en su mano las dos tablas del testimonio, las tablas escritas por ambos lados; de uno y otro lado estaban escritas.

16 T he stone writings were God’s work. The writing was God’s writing cut into the stones.

Y las tablas eran obra de Dios, y la escritura era escritura de Dios grabada sobre las tablas.

17 W hen Joshua heard the sound of the people as they made noise, he said to Moses, “There is a sound of war at the tents.”

Cuando oyó Josué el clamor del pueblo que gritaba, dijo a Moisés: Alarido de pelea hay en el campamento.

18 B ut Moses said, “It is not the sound of winning, or the sound of losing. It is the sound of singing I hear.”

Y él respondió: No es voz de alaridos de fuertes, ni voz de alaridos de débiles; voz de cantar oigo yo.

19 A s soon as Moses came near the tents, he saw the calf and the dancing. Moses became very angry. He threw the stone writings from his hands and broke them at the base of the mountain.

Y aconteció que cuando él llegó al campamento, y vio el becerro y las danzas, ardió la ira de Moisés, y arrojó las tablas de sus manos, y las quebró al pie del monte. Destrucción del becerro

20 A nd he took the calf they had made and burned it with fire, ground it to dust, spread it over the top of the water, and made the people of Israel drink it.

Y tomó el becerro que habían hecho, y lo quemó en el fuego, y lo molió hasta reducirlo a polvo, que esparció sobre las aguas, y lo dio a beber a los hijos de Israel.

21 T hen Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you to make you bring such great sin upon them?”

Y dijo Moisés a Aarón: ¿Qué te ha hecho este pueblo, que has traído sobre él tan gran pecado?

22 A aron said, “Do not let my lord be angry. You know the people yourself and how sinful they are.

Y respondió Aarón: No se enoje mi señor; tú conoces al pueblo, que es inclinado a mal.

23 T hey said to me, ‘Make a god for us who will go in front of us. For we do not know what has become of Moses, the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt.’

Porque me dijeron: Haznos dioses que vayan delante de nosotros; porque a este Moisés, el varón que nos sacó de la tierra de Egipto, no sabemos qué le haya acontecido.

24 A nd I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them take it off.’ So they gave it to me. I threw it into the fire and out came this calf.”

Y yo les respondí: ¿Quién tiene oro? Apartadlo. Y me lo dieron, y lo eché en el fuego, y salió este becerro.

25 M oses saw that Aaron had let the people go wild and become a shame to those who hated them.

Y viendo Moisés que el pueblo estaba desenfrenado, porque Aarón lo había permitido, para vergüenza entre sus enemigos,

26 S o Moses stood in the gate of the place where they had set up their tents and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me!” And all the sons of Levi came together around him.

se puso Moisés a la puerta del campamento, y dijo: ¿Quién está por Jehová? Júntese conmigo. Y se juntaron con él todos los hijos de Leví.

27 H e said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Every man put his sword on his thigh. And go from one end of the tents to the other, and each one kill his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.’”

Y él les dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová, el Dios de Israel: Poned cada uno su espada sobre su muslo; pasad y volved de puerta a puerta por el campamento, y matad cada uno a su hermano, y a su amigo, y a su pariente.

28 S o the sons of Levi did as Moses said. About 3, 000 men fell that day.

Y los hijos de Leví lo hicieron conforme al dicho de Moisés; y cayeron del pueblo en aquel día como tres mil hombres.

29 T hen Moses said, “Today you have set yourselves apart for the Lord. For each man has been against his son and against his brother, so the Lord may bring good to you today.”

Entonces Moisés dijo: Hoy os habéis consagrado a Jehová, pues cada uno se ha consagrado en su hijo y en su hermano, para que él dé bendición hoy sobre vosotros. Súplica de Moisés

30 T he next day Moses said to the people, “You have sinned. Now I am going up to the Lord. It might be that I can have your sin forgiven.”

Y aconteció que al día siguiente dijo Moisés al pueblo: Vosotros habéis cometido un gran pecado, pero yo subiré ahora a Jehová; quizá le aplacaré acerca de vuestro pecado,

31 T hen Moses returned to the Lord and said, “O, this people have sinned. They have made a god of gold for themselves.

Entonces volvió Moisés a Jehová, y dijo: Te ruego, pues este pueblo ha cometido un gran pecado, porque se hicieron dioses de oro,

32 B ut now, if You will, forgive their sin. If not, then take my name out of Your book which You have written.”

que perdones ahora su pecado, y si no, ráeme ahora de tu libro que has escrito.

33 T he Lord said to Moses, “I will put out of My book whoever has sinned against Me.

Y Jehová respondió a Moisés: Al que peque contra mí, a éste raeré yo de mi libro.

34 B ut go now. Lead the people where I told you. See, My angel will go before you. But in the day when I punish, I will punish them for their sin.”

Ve, pues, ahora, lleva a este pueblo adonde te he dicho; he aquí mi Ángel irá delante de ti; pero en el día del castigo, yo castigaré en ellos su pecado.

35 T hen the Lord sent trouble upon the people, because of what they did with the calf Aaron had made.

Y Jehová hirió al pueblo, porque habían hecho el becerro que formó Aarón.
