1 Y MANDO José al mayordomo de su casa, diciendo: Hinche los costales de aquestos varones de alimentos, cuanto pudieren llevar, y pon el dinero de cada uno en la boca de su costal:

Then Joseph told the man who took care of his house, “Fill the men’s bags with as much food as they can carry. And put each man’s money in his bag.

2 Y pondrás mi copa, la copa de plata, en la boca del costal del menor, con el dinero de su trigo. Y él hizo como dijo José.

Put my silver cup in the bag of the youngest, with his money for the grain.” And he did what Joseph had told him to do.

3 V enida la mañana, los hombres fueron despedidos con sus asnos.

Early in the morning the men were sent away with their donkeys.

4 H abiendo ellos salido de la ciudad, de la que aun no se habían alejado, dijo José á su mayordomo: Levántate, y sigue á esos hombres; y cuando los alcanzares, diles: ¿Por qué habéis vuelto mal por bien?

When they had left the city and were not far away, Joseph said to the man who took care of his house, “Get up and follow the men. When you come to them, say to them, ‘Why have you returned bad for good? Why have you stolen the silver cup?

5 ¿ No es ésta en la que bebe mi señor, y por la que suele adivinar? habéis hecho mal en lo que hicisteis.

Is this not my lord’s drinking cup that he uses for telling about the future? You have done wrong.’”

6 Y como él los alcanzó, díjoles estas palabras.

So he came to them and spoke these words to them.

7 Y ellos le respondieron: ¿Por qué dice mi señor tales cosas? Nunca tal hagan tus siervos.

And they said to him, “Why does my lord say these things? Your servants would never do such a thing.

8 H e aquí, el dinero que hallamos en la boca de nuestros costales, te lo volvimos á traer desde la tierra de Canaán; ¿cómo, pues, habíamos de hurtar de casa de tu señor plata ni oro?

Remember how we returned to you from the land of Canaan with the money we found in the top of our bags. Why then would we steal silver or gold from your owner’s house?

9 A quel de tus siervos en quien fuere hallada la copa, que muera, y aun nosotros seremos siervos de mi señor.

If the cup is found with any of your servants, let him be put to death. And the others of us will be your servants.”

10 Y él dijo: También ahora sea conforme á vuestras palabras; aquél en quien se hallare, será mi siervo, y vosotros seréis sin culpa.

He answered, “Let it be as you say. He who is found to have the cup will be my servant. But you others will be without blame.”

11 E llos entonces se dieron prisa, y derribando cada uno su costal en tierra, abrió cada cual el costal suyo.

Then each man put his bag down on the ground in a hurry and opened it.

12 Y buscó; desde el mayor comenzó, y acabó en el menor; y la copa fué hallada en el costal de Benjamín.

The man looked for it, beginning with the oldest and stopping with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s bag.

13 E ntonces ellos rasgaron sus vestidos, y cargó cada uno su asno, y volvieron á la ciudad.

Then they tore their clothes. After each man loaded his donkey again, they returned to the city.

14 Y llegó Judá con sus hermanos á casa de José, que aun estaba allí, y postráronse delante de él en tierra.

When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, he was still there. They fell to the ground in front of him.

15 Y díjoles José: ¿Qué obra es esta que habéis hecho? ¿no sabéis que un hombre como yo sabe adivinar?

Joseph said to them, “What is this that you have done? Did you not know that a man like me has power to know what is not known by others?”

16 E ntonces dijo Judá: ¿Qué diremos á mi señor? ¿qué hablaremos? ¿ó con qué nos justificaremos? Dios ha hallado la maldad de tus siervos: he aquí, nosotros somos siervos de mi señor, nosotros, y también aquél en cuyo poder fué hallada la copa.

Judah said, “We do not know what to say to my lord. How can we make ourselves right in your eyes? God has shown the guilt of your servants. See, we are your servants, both we and the one who was found with the cup.”

17 Y él respondió: Nunca yo tal haga: el varón en cuyo poder fué hallada la copa, él será mi siervo; vosotros id en paz á vuestro padre.

But Joseph said, “No. I will do no such thing. The person who was found with the cup will be my servant. But you others may go in peace to your father.”

18 E ntonces Judá se llegó á él, y dijo: Ay señor mío, ruégote que hable tu siervo una palabra en oídos de mi señor, y no se encienda tu enojo contra tu siervo, pues que tú eres como Faraón.

Then Judah came near to him, and said, “O my lord, let your servant speak a word in my lord’s ears. Do not be angry with your servant. For you are like Pharaoh himself.

19 M i señor preguntó á sus siervos, diciendo: ¿Tenéis padre ó hermano?

My lord asked his servants, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’

20 Y nosotros respondimos á mi señor: Tenemos un padre anciano, y un mozo que le nació en su vejez, pequeño aún; y un hermano suyo murió, y él quedó solo de su madre, y su padre lo ama.

We said to my lord, ‘We have an old father and a young brother who was born to him when he was old. Now his brother is dead. So he is all that is left of his mother, and his father loves him.’

21 Y tú dijiste á tus siervos: Traédmelo, y pondré mis ojos sobre él.

Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him here to me, so I may see him.’

22 Y nosotros dijimos á mi señor: El mozo no puede dejar á su padre, porque si le dejare, su padre morirá.

But we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father. For if he should leave his father, his father would die.’

23 Y dijiste á tus siervos: Si vuestro hermano menor no descendiere con vosotros, no veáis más mi rostro.

Then you said to your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes here with you, you will not see my face again.’

24 A conteció pues, que como llegamos á mi padre tu siervo, contámosle las palabras de mi señor.

“When we returned to your servant my father, we told him what my lord had said.

25 Y dijo nuestro padre: Volved á comprarnos un poco de alimento.

Our father said, ‘Go again and buy us a little food.’

26 Y nosotros respondimos: No podemos ir: si nuestro hermano fuere con nosotros, iremos; porque no podemos ver el rostro del varón, no estando con nosotros nuestro hermano el menor.

But we said, ‘We cannot go there. If our youngest brother is with us, we will go there. For we cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’

27 E ntonces tu siervo mi padre nos dijo: Vosotros sabéis que dos me parió mi mujer;

“Then your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife gave birth to two of my sons.

28 Y el uno salió de conmigo, y pienso de cierto que fué despedazado, y hasta ahora no le he visto;

One left me, and I said, “For sure he is torn to pieces.” I have not seen him since.

29 Y si tomareis también éste de delante de mí, y le aconteciere algún desastre, haréis descender mis canas con dolor á la sepultura.

If you take this one also from me, and something happens to him, you will bring my white hair down to the grave in sorrow.’

30 A hora, pues, cuando llegare yo á tu siervo mi padre, y el mozo no fuere conmigo, como su alma está ligada al alma de él,

My father’s life and the boy’s life are one. If I return to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us,

31 S ucederá que cuando no vea al mozo, morirá: y tus siervos harán descender las canas de tu siervo nuestro padre con dolor á la sepultura.

when he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die. So your servants will bring the white hair of your servant our father down to the grave in sorrow.

32 C omo tu siervo salió por fiador del mozo con mi padre, diciendo: Si no te lo volviere, entonces yo seré culpable para mi padre todos los días;

For I put myself as trust for the boy to my father. I said, ‘If I do not return him to you, then let the blame be on me forever.’

33 R uégote por tanto que quede ahora tu siervo por el mozo por siervo de mi señor, y que el mozo vaya con sus hermanos.

So let your servant stay and work for my lord, instead of the boy. Let the boy go home with his brothers.

34 P orque ¿cómo iré yo á mi padre sin el mozo? No podré, por no ver el mal que sobrevendrá á mi padre.

For how can I return to my father if the boy is not with me? I am afraid to see the sorrow that my father would suffer.”
