1 E N el año veintitrés de Joas hijo de Ochôzías, rey de Judá, comenzó á reinar Joachâz hijo de Jehú sobre Israel en Samaria; y reinó diecisiete años.

In the twenty-third year of Ahaziah’s son Joash the king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu became the king of Israel at Samaria. He ruled for seventeen years.

2 E hizo lo malo en ojos de Jehová, y siguió los pecados de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el que hizo pecar á Israel; y no se apartó de ellos.

Jehoahaz did what was sinful in the eyes of the Lord. He followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel sin. He did not turn from them.

3 Y encendióse el furor de Jehová contra Israel, y entrególos en mano de Hazael rey de Siria, y en mano de Ben-adad hijo de Hazael, por largo tiempo.

So the anger of the Lord burned against Israel. He put them always under the power of King Hazael of Syria, and Ben-hadad the son of Hazael.

4 M as Joachâz oró á la faz de Jehová, y Jehová lo oyó: porque miró la aflicción de Israel, pues el rey de Siria los afligía.

Then Jehoahaz begged for the Lord’s favor, and the Lord listened to him. For He saw the bad power held over Israel. He saw how the king of Syria made it hard for them.

5 ( Y dió Jehová salvador á Israel, y salieron de bajo la mano de los Siros; y habitaron los hijos de Israel en sus estancias, como antes.

So the Lord gave Israel someone to save them. And they were saved from the power of the Syrians. The people of Israel lived in their tents as before.

6 C on todo eso no se apartaron de los pecados de la casa de Jeroboam, el que hizo pecar á Israel: en ellos anduvieron; y también el bosque permaneció en Samaria.)

But they did not turn away from the sins of the family of Jeroboam, which made Israel sin. They walked in those sins. And the object of the false goddess Asherah was left standing in Samaria.

7 P orque no le había quedado gente á Joachâz, sino cincuenta hombres de á caballo, y diez carros, y diez mil hombres de á pié; pues el rey de Siria los había destruído, y los había puesto como polvo para hollar.

The king of Syria did not leave to Jehoahaz an army of more than fifty horsemen, ten war-wagons and 10, 000 foot-soldiers. For the king of Syria had destroyed them and made them like the dust of beaten grain.

8 L o demás de los hechos de Joachâz, y todo lo que hizo, y sus valentías, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel?

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, all he did and his strength, are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.

9 Y durmió Joachâz con sus padres, y sepultáronlo en Samaria: y reinó en su lugar Joas su hijo.

When Jehoahaz died, they buried him in Samaria. And his son Joash became king in his place. Jehoash Rules Israel

10 E l año treinta y siete de Joas rey de Judá, comenzó á reinar Joas hijo de Joachâz sobre Israel en Samaria; y reinó dieciséis años.

In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz became king of Israel in Samaria. He ruled for sixteen years.

11 E hizo lo malo en ojos de Jehová: no se apartó de todos los pecados de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el que hizo pecar á Israel; en ellos anduvo.

And he did what was sinful in the eyes of the Lord. He did not turn away from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, in which he made Israel sin. But he walked in those sins.

12 L o demás de los hechos de Joas, y todas las cosas que hizo, y su esfuerzo con que guerreó contra Amasías rey de Judá, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel?

Jehoash did many things. With his strength he fought against Amaziah king of Judah. The rest of his acts are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.

13 Y durmió Joas con sus padres, y sentóse Jeroboam sobre su trono: y Joas fué sepultado en Samaria con los reyes de Israel.

Jehoash died, and Jeroboam sat on his throne. Jehoash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. The Death of Elisha

14 E staba Eliseo enfermo de aquella su enfermedad de que murió. Y descendió á él Joas rey de Israel, y llorando delante de él, dijo: ­Padre mío, padre mío, carro de Israel y su gente de á caballo!

Elisha became sick with the sickness of which he was to die. And Joash the king of Israel came down to him and cried over him, saying, “My father, my father, the war-wagons of Israel and its horsemen!”

15 Y díjole Eliseo: Toma un arco y unas saetas. Tomóse él entonces un arco y unas saetas.

Elisha said to him, “Take a bow and arrows.” So he took a bow and arrows.

16 Y dijo Eliseo al rey de Israel: Pon tu mano sobre el arco. Y puso él su mano sobre el arco. Entonces puso Eliseo sus manos sobre las manos del rey,

Then he said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” So he put his hand on it. Then Elisha laid his hands on the king’s hands.

17 Y dijo: Abre la ventana de hacia el oriente. Y como él la abrió dijo Eliseo: Tira. Y tirando él, dijo Eliseo: Saeta de salud de Jehová, y saeta de salud contra Siria: porque herirás á los Siros en Aphec, hasta consumirlos.

And he said, “Open the window toward the east,” and he opened it. Then Elisha said, “Shoot!” And he shot. Elisha said, “The Lord’s arrow of winning the battle! The arrow of winning the battle against Syria! For you will fight the Syrians at Aphek until you have destroyed them.

18 Y tornóle á decir: Toma las saetas. Y luego que el rey de Israel las hubo tomado, díjole: Hiere la tierra. Y él hirió tres veces, y cesó.

Then Elisha said, “Take the arrows,” and he took them. He said to the king of Israel, “Hit the ground,” and he hit it three times, and stopped.

19 E ntonces el varón de Dios, enojado con él, le dijo: A herir cinco ó seis veces, herirías á Siria, hasta no quedar ninguno: empero ahora tres veces herirás á Siria.

So the man of God was angry with him and said, “You should have hit it five or six times. Then you would have fought Syria until you had destroyed it. But now you will win the fight against Syria only three times.”

20 Y murió Eliseo, y sepultáronlo. Entrado el año vinieron partidas de Moabitas á la tierra.

Elisha died, and they buried him. Now groups of Moabite soldiers would come and fight in the land in the spring of the year.

21 Y aconteció que al sepultar unos un hombre, súbitamente vieron una partida, y arrojaron al hombre en el sepulcro de Eliseo: y cuando llegó á tocar el muerto los huesos de Eliseo, revivió, y levantóse sobre sus pies.

As a man was being buried, some Moabite soldiers were seen, so the man was thrown into Elisha’s grave. When the man touched the bones of Elisha, he came alive and stood up on his feet. The War between Israel and Syria

22 H azael pues, rey de Siria, afligió á Israel todo el tiempo de Joachâz.

Now King Hazael of Syria had made it hard for Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.

23 M as Jehová tuvo misericordia de ellos, y compadecióse de ellos, y mirólos, por amor de su pacto con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob; y no quiso destruirlos ni echarlos de delante de sí hasta ahora.

But the Lord showed them kindness and loving-pity and turned to them because of His agreement with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He would not destroy them or put them away from Him until now.

24 Y murió Hazael rey de Siria, y reinó en su lugar Ben-adad su hijo.

When King Hazael of Syria died, his son Ben-hadad became king in his place.

25 Y volvió Joas hijo de Joachâz, y tomó de mano de Ben-adad hijo de Hazael, las ciudades que él había tomado de mano de Joachâz su padre en guerra. Tres veces lo batió Joas, y restituyó las ciudades á Israel.

Then Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took back from Hazael’s son Ben-hadad the cities he had taken in war from his father Jehoahaz. Three times Joash won in battle against him and took back the cities of Israel.
