1 H ear, Israel! Thou art to pass over the Jordan this day, to enter in to possess nations greater and mightier than thou, cities great and walled up to heaven,

Ascultă, Israele! Astăzi veţi traversa Iordanul ca să începeţi să puneţi stăpânire pe neamuri mai mari şi mai puternice decât voi, cu cetăţi mari şi fortificate până la cer,

2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard, Who can stand before the sons of Anak!

cum sunt anachiţii, un popor puternic şi de statură înaltă, pe care îi cunoaşteţi şi despre care aţi auzit zicându-se: «Cine poate sta împotriva anachiţilor?»

3 K now then this day, that Jehovah thy God is he that goeth over before thee, a consuming fire; he will destroy them, and he will cast them down before thee, and thou shalt dispossess them and cause them to perish quickly, as Jehovah hath said unto thee.

Dar să ştiţi astăzi că Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, va traversa El Însuşi înaintea voastră, ca un foc mistuitor. El îi va distruge şi vi-i va supune, iar voi îi veţi izgoni şi îi veţi nimici repede, aşa cum Domnul v-a promis.

4 T hou shalt not say in thy heart, when Jehovah thy God thrusteth them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness Jehovah hath brought me in to possess this land; but for the wickedness of these nations doth Jehovah dispossess them from before thee.

După ce îi va izgoni dinaintea voastră, să nu începeţi să ziceţi în inimile voastre: «Datorită dreptăţii noastre ne-a adus Domnul să stăpânim această ţară!» Căci din cauza răutăţii acestor neamuri le va izgoni Domnul dinaintea voastră.

5 N ot for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thy heart, dost thou enter in to possess their land, but for the wickedness of these nations doth Jehovah thy God dispossess them from before thee, and that he may perform the word which Jehovah swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

Nu datorită dreptăţii sau onestităţii inimilor voastre veţi intra în stăpânirea teritoriilor lor, ci din cauza răutăţii acestor neamuri Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, le va izgoni dinaintea voastră, prin aceasta împlinind totodată şi jurământul făcut strămoşilor voştri, Avraam, Isaac şi Iacov.

6 K now therefore that Jehovah thy God doth not give thee this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiff-necked people.

Să ştiţi deci că nu din cauza dreptăţii voastre Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, v-a dat în stăpânire această ţară bună, fiindcă voi sunteţi un popor încăpăţânat.

7 R emember, forget not, how thou provokedst Jehovah thy God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came to this place, ye have been rebellious against Jehovah.

Aduceţi-vă aminte şi nu uitaţi cum L-aţi provocat la mânie în pustie. V-aţi împotrivit Lui din ziua în care aţi ieşit din ţara Egiptului, până la sosirea voastră aici.

8 A nd at Horeb ye provoked Jehovah to wrath, and Jehovah was angry with you, to destroy you,

La Horeb aţi provocat într-atât mânia Domnului, încât Domnul s-a mâniat pe voi, dorind să vă nimicească.

9 w hen I went up the mountain to receive the tables of stone, the tables of the covenant which Jehovah made with you, and I abode in the mountain forty days and forty nights,—I ate no bread and drank no water,—

Când m-am urcat pe munte ca să iau tablele de piatră, Tablele Legământului pe care Domnul l-a încheiat cu voi, am rămas pe munte patruzeci de zile şi patruzeci de nopţi fără să mănânc pâine şi fără să beau apă.

10 — and Jehovah delivered to me the two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them according to all the words which Jehovah spoke with you on the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly.

Domnul mi-a dat cele două table de piatră scrise cu degetul lui Dumnezeu. Pe ele erau toate poruncile pe care mi le-a spus pe munte, din mijlocul focului, în ziua adunării.

11 A nd it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that Jehovah gave me the two tables of stone, the tables of the covenant.

La sfârşitul celor patruzeci de zile şi patruzeci de nopţi Domnul mi-a dat tablele de piatră, Tablele Legământului.

12 A nd Jehovah said unto me, Arise, go down quickly from hence; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them: they have made for themselves a molten image.

Domnul mi-a zis atunci: «Ridică-te şi coboară-te repede din acest loc fiindcă poporul tău pe care l-ai scos din Egipt s-a pervertit. Repede s-a mai abătut de la calea pe care i-am poruncit-o, turnându-şi un idol!»

13 A nd Jehovah spoke unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people.

Domnul mi-a vorbit din nou astfel: «Văd că poporul acesta este un popor încăpăţânat.

14 L et me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.

Lasă-Mă să-i nimicesc şi să le şterg numele de sub ceruri, iar din tine am să fac un neam puternic şi mai numeros decât ei.»

15 A nd I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire; and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.

Eu m-am întors şi am coborât de pe munte. Muntele ardea ca un foc, iar cele două Table ale Legământului erau în mâinile mele.

16 A nd I saw, and behold, ye had sinned against Jehovah your God: ye had made for yourselves a molten calf; ye had quickly turned aside from the way which Jehovah had commanded you.

Când m-am uitat, am văzut că păcătuiserăţi împotriva Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru, făcându-vă ca idol un viţel. Repede v-aţi abătut de la calea pe care v-o poruncise Domnul!

17 A nd I seized the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes.

Atunci am luat cele două table şi le-am aruncat din mâini, spărgându-le înaintea ochilor voştri.

18 A nd I fell down before Jehovah, as at the first, forty days and forty nights,—I ate no bread and drank no water,—because of all your sin which ye had sinned, in doing what is evil in the eyes of Jehovah, to provoke him to anger.

M-am aruncat cu faţa la pământ înaintea Domnului timp de patruzeci de zile şi patruzeci de nopţi. Nu am mâncat pâine şi nici nu am băut apă din cauza tuturor păcatelor pe care le-aţi săvârşit. Astfel aţi făcut ce este rău înaintea Domnului şi I-aţi provocat mânia.

19 F or I was afraid of the anger and fury wherewith Jehovah was wroth against you to destroy you. And Jehovah listened unto me also at that time.

La vederea mâniei şi furiei Domnului m-am înspăimântat, fiindcă era plin de mânie împotriva voastră până acolo, încât să vă nimicească. Dar Domnul m-a ascultat şi de data aceasta.

20 A nd with Aaron Jehovah was very angry to destroy him; and I prayed for Aaron also at the same time.

De asemenea, Domnul a fost foarte supărat şi pe Aaron, încât a dorit să-l omoare, dar m-am rugat atunci şi pentru el.

21 A nd I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burned it with fire, and crushed it, and ground it very small, until it became fine dust; and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that flowed down from the mountain.

Am luat viţelul pe care-l făcuserăţi, isprava păcatului vostru, şi l-am ars în foc. L-am sfărâmat bine, l-am măcinat până s-a făcut cenuşă şi am aruncat cenuşa în pârâul care curgea din munte.

22 A nd at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, ye provoked Jehovah to wrath.

Apoi, la Tabera, la Masa şi la Chibrot-Hataava aţi provocat iarăşi mânia Domnului.

23 A nd when Jehovah sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go up and take possession of the land which I have given you, ye rebelled against the word of Jehovah your God, and ye believed him not, nor hearkened to his voice.

Iar când v-a trimis Domnul de la Kadeş-Barnea, zicându-vă: «Duceţi-vă şi luaţi în stăpânire ţara pe care v-am dat-o!», v-aţi împotrivit din nou poruncii Lui. Nu v-aţi încrezut în El şi nu aţi ascultat de glasul Lui.

24 Y e have been rebellious against Jehovah from the day that I knew you.

V-aţi împotrivit Domnului de când vă cunosc.

25 S o I fell down before Jehovah the forty days and forty nights, as I fell down; for Jehovah had said he would destroy you.

M-am aruncat cu faţa la pământ înaintea Domnului patruzeci de zile şi patruzeci de nopţi, pentru că Domnul spusese că vrea să vă nimicească.

26 I prayed therefore to Jehovah, and said, Lord Jehovah, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a powerful hand.

M-am rugat Domnului şi I-am zis: «Stăpâne Doamne, nu distruge poporul Tău, moştenirea Ta, pe care ai izbăvit-o cu puterea Ta cea mare şi ai scos-o din Egipt cu mână tare.

27 R emember thy servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not at the stubbornness of this people, nor at their wickedness, nor at their sin;

Adu-Ţi aminte de slujitorii Tăi, Avraam, Isaac şi Iacov. Nu privi la încăpăţânarea acestui popor, nici la răutatea şi păcatul lui,

28 l est the land whence thou broughtest us out say, Because Jehovah was not able to bring them into the land which he had promised them, and because he hated them, he hath brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.

ca nu cumva în ţara din care ne-ai scos să se spună: ‘Pentru că Domnul nu avea putere să-i ducă în ţara pe care le-a promis-o şi pentru că îi ura, de aceea i-a scos din Egipt, ca să-i omoare în pustie.’

29 T hey are indeed thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out with thy great power and with thy stretched-out arm.

Totuşi ei sunt poporul Tău, moştenirea Ta, pe care ai izbăvit-o cu puterea Ta cea mare şi cu braţul Tău întins.»
