1 T he word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying,

Iată Cuvântul care a venit la Ieremia din partea Domnului:

2 H ear ye the words of this covenant; and speak ye unto the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

– Ascultă cuvintele acestui legământ şi vorbeşte-le oamenilor lui Iuda şi locuitorilor Ierusalimului.

3 A nd thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant

Spune-le că aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: „Blestemat este omul care nu ascultă de cuvintele acestui legământ,

4 w hich I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Hearken unto my voice and do them, according to all that I command you; so shall ye be my people, and I will be your God:

pe care l-am poruncit strămoşilor voştri în ziua când i-am scos din ţara Egiptului, din cuptorul de fier. Eu le-am zis: «Ascultaţi de glasul Meu şi faceţi tot ce v-am poruncit şi astfel veţi fi poporul Meu, iar Eu voi fi Dumnezeul vostru;

5 t hat I may perform the oath that I have sworn unto your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day. And I answered and said, Amen, Jehovah!

atunci Îmi voi împlini jurământul pe care l-am făcut faţă de strămoşii voştri, potrivit căruia le voi da o ţară în care curge lapte şi miere, cum vedeţi astăzi.»“ Eu am răspuns: – Amin, Doamne!

6 A nd Jehovah said unto me, Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying: Hear the words of this covenant, and do them.

Domnul mi-a zis: – Vesteşte toate aceste cuvinte în cetăţile lui Iuda şi pe străzile Ierusalimului şi zi: „Ascultaţi de cuvintele acestui legământ şi împliniţi-le!

7 F or I earnestly protested unto your fathers, in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, unto this day, rising early and protesting, saying, Hearken unto my voice.

Din ziua când i-am scos pe strămoşii voştri din ţara Egiptului şi până în ziua de azi, i-am avertizat iarăşi şi iarăşi şi le-am zis: «Ascultaţi de glasul Meu!»

8 B ut they have not hearkened, nor inclined their ear, but have walked every one in the stubbornness of their evil heart; and I have brought upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded to do, and they have not done.

Dar ei nu M-au ascultat şi nu şi-au plecat urechea, ci au umblat fiecare în încăpăţânarea inimii lor rele. De aceea am adus asupra lor toate cuvintele acestui legământ, pe care li le poruncisem să le împlinească şi nu le-au împlinit.“

9 A nd Jehovah said unto me, A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Apoi Domnul mi-a zis: – Este o uneltire între bărbaţii lui Iuda şi locuitorii Ierusalimului.

10 T hey are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, who refused to hear my words; and they have gone after other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers.

Ei s-au întors la nelegiuirile cele dintâi ale strămoşilor lor, care au refuzat să asculte cuvintele Mele, şi s-au dus după alţi dumnezei ca să le slujească. Casa lui Israel şi Casa lui Iuda au rupt legământul Meu, pe care-l încheiasem cu strămoşii lor.

11 T herefore thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I will bring evil upon them, from which they shall not be able to escape; and they will cry unto me, and I will not hearken unto them.

De aceea, aşa vorbeşte Domnul: „Iată, voi aduce peste ei o mare nenorocire de care nu vor putea scăpa. Vor striga la Mine, dar nu-i voi asculta!

12 T hen shall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem go and cry unto the gods unto whom they have burned incense; but they shall not save them at all in the time of their trouble.

Cetăţile lui Iuda şi locuitorii Ierusalimului se vor duce să-i cheme pe zeii cărora le aduc tămâie, dar aceştia nu-i vor izbăvi în timpul nenorocirii.

13 F or the number of thy cities, are thy gods, O Judah; and the number of the streets of Jerusalem, have ye set up altars to the Shame, altars to burn incense unto Baal.

«Iuda, ai tot atâţia zei, câte cetăţi ai! Şi câte străzi are Ierusalimul, tot atâtea altare aţi înălţat şi voi ruşinii, altare de tămâiere în cinstea lui Baal!»

14 A nd thou, pray not for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them; for I will not hear in the time that they cry unto me for their trouble.

Tu însă, nu mijloci pentru poporul acesta, nu înălţa nici cereri, nici rugăciuni pentru el, căci nu-i voi asculta când Mă vor chema în ziua nenorocirii lor.“

15 W hat hath my beloved to do in my house, seeing that the more part practise their evil devices, and the holy flesh is passed from thee? When thou doest evil, then thou rejoicest.

„Ce face preaiubitul Meu în Casa Mea, în timp ce face o mulţime de planuri rele? Ar putea oare carnea sfântă a jertfelor să îndepărteze de la tine pedeapsa ? Căci atunci când faci răul, tu te bucuri!“

16 J ehovah had called thy name, A green olive-tree, fair, of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and its branches are broken.

„ Domnul te-a numit: «Măslin verde, înfloritor şi cu fructe frumoase.» Dar, prin vuietul unei mari trosnituri, El îi va da foc, şi ramurile lui vor fi zdrobite.

17 F or Jehovah of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done for themselves, to provoke me to anger in burning incense unto Baal.

Domnul Oştirilor, Care te-a plantat, a decretat nenorocirea împotriva ta, din cauza răutăţii Casei lui Israel şi a Casei lui Iuda, care M-au provocat la mânie, arzând tămâie pentru Baal.“ Complot împotriva lui Ieremia

18 A nd Jehovah hath given me knowledge, and I know; then thou shewedst me their doings.

„ Domnul m-a înştiinţat şi eu am ştiut. Tu mi-ai arătat atunci faptele lor.

19 A nd I was like a tame lamb is led to the slaughter; and I knew not that they devised devices against me, Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.

Dar eu eram ca un miel blând, dus la măcelărie şi nu ştiam planurile rele pe care ei le făceau împotriva mea, când ziceau: «Să distrugem pomul cu rodul lui, să-l ştergem de pe pământul celor vii, ca să nu i se mai amintească numele.»

20 B ut thou, Jehovah of hosts, who judgest righteously, who triest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I revealed my cause.

Dar, Doamne al Oştirilor, Tu, Care judeci cu dreptate, Care cercetezi inima şi mintea, lasă-mă să văd răzbunarea Ta asupra lor, căci Ţie Ţi-am încredinţat cauza mea!“

21 T herefore thus saith Jehovah concerning the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Prophesy not in the name of Jehovah, that thou die not by our hand,

„De aceea, aşa vorbeşte Domnul împotriva oamenilor din Anatot, care caută să-ţi ia viaţa zicând: «Nu profeţi în Numele Domnului, căci vei muri ucis de mâna noastră!»

22 — therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Behold, I punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons and their daughters shall die by famine;

De aceea, aşa vorbeşte Domnul Oştirilor: «Îi voi pedepsi – tinerii lor vor muri ucişi de sabie, iar fiii şi fiicele lor vor muri de foame.

23 a nd there shall be no remnant of them; for I will bring evil upon the men of Anathoth, in the year of their visitation.

Nici măcar o rămăşiţă nu le va fi lăsată, căci voi aduce nenorocirea peste oamenii din Anatot, în anul când vor fi pedepsiţi.»“
