1 I n like manner, you married women, be submissive to your own husbands, so that even if any do not obey the Word, they may be won over not by discussion but by the lives of their wives,

Asimismo vosotras, mujeres, estad sometidas a vuestros maridos; para que aun si algunos desobedecen a la palabra, sean ganados sin palabra mediante la conducta de sus esposas,

2 W hen they observe the pure and modest way in which you conduct yourselves, together with your reverence.

teniendo a la vista vuestra conducta casta y respetuosa.

3 L et not yours be the external adorning with interweaving and knotting of the hair, the wearing of jewelry, or changes of clothes;

Vuestro atavío no sea el externo de peinados ostentosos, de adornos de oro o de vestidos lujosos,

4 B ut let it be the inward adorning and beauty of the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible and unfading charm of a gentle and peaceful spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

sino el ser interior de la persona, en el incorruptible ornato de un espíritu manso y apacible, que es de gran valor delante de Dios.

5 F or it was thus that the pious women of old who hoped in God were to beautify themselves and were submissive to their husbands.

Porque así también se ataviaban en otro tiempo aquellas santas mujeres que esperaban en Dios, estando sometidas a sus maridos;

como Sara obedecía a Abraham, llamándole señor; de la cual vosotras habéis venido a ser hijas, si hacéis el bien, sin temer ninguna amenaza.

7 I n the same way you married men should live considerately with, with an intelligent recognition, honoring the woman as the weaker, but are joint heirs of the grace (God’s unmerited favor) of life, in order that your prayers may not be hindered and cut off.

Vosotros, maridos, igualmente, convivid con ellas con comprensión, tratando a la mujer como a vaso más frágil, y dándoles honor también como a coherederas de la gracia de la vida, para que vuestras oraciones no sean estorbadas. Una buena conciencia

8 F inally, all should be of one and the same mind (united in spirit), sympathizing, loving as brethren, compassionate and courteous (tenderhearted and humble).

En conclusión, sed todos de un mismo sentir, compasivos, amándoos fraternalmente, misericordiosos, amigables;

9 N ever return evil for evil or insult for insult (scolding, tongue-lashing, berating), but on the contrary blessing. For know that to this you have been called, that you may yourselves inherit a blessing.

no devolviendo mal por mal, ni maldición por maldición, sino por el contrario, bendiciendo, sabiendo que fuisteis llamados con el fin de que heredaseis bendición.

10 F or let him who wants to enjoy life and see good days keep his tongue free from evil and his lips from guile (treachery, deceit).

Porque: El que quiere amar la vida Y ver días buenos, Refrene su lengua del mal, Y sus labios no hablen engaño;

11 L et him turn away from wickedness and shun it, and let him do right. Let him search for peace (harmony; undisturbedness from fears, agitating passions, and moral conflicts) and seek it eagerly.

Apártese del mal, y haga el bien; Busque la paz, y sígala.

12 F or the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous (those who are upright and in right standing with God), and His ears are attentive to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who practice evil.

Porque los ojos del Señor están sobre los justos, Y sus oídos atentos a sus oraciones; Pero el rostro del Señor está contra aquellos que hacen el mal.

13 N ow who is there to hurt you if you are zealous followers of that which is good?

¿Y quién es el que os podrá hacer daño, si vosotros tenéis celo por el bien?

14 B ut even in case you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, blessed (happy, to be envied). Do not dread or be afraid of their threats, nor be disturbed.

Pero aun si padecéis por causa de la justicia, dichosos sois. Y no os amedrentéis por temor a ellos, ni os turbéis,

15 B ut in your hearts set Christ apart as holy as Lord. Always be ready to give a logical defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope that is in you, but do it courteously and respectfully.

sino santificad a Dios el Señor en vuestros corazones, y estad siempre preparados para presentar defensa con mansedumbre y reverencia ante todo el que os demande razón de la esperanza que hay en vosotros;

16 y our conscience is entirely clear ( unimpaired), so that, when you are falsely accused as evildoers, those who threaten you abusively and revile your right behavior in Christ may come to be ashamed.

teniendo buena conciencia, para que en lo que murmuran de vosotros como de malhechores, sean avergonzados los que calumnian vuestra buena conducta en Cristo.

17 F or better to suffer for doing right, if that should be God’s will, than to suffer for doing wrong.

Porque mejor es que padezcáis haciendo el bien, si la voluntad de Dios así lo quiere, que haciendo el mal.

18 F or Christ died for sins once for all, the Righteous for the unrighteous (the Just for the unjust, the Innocent for the guilty), that He might bring us to God. In His human body He was put to death, but He was made alive in the spirit,

Porque también Cristo padeció una sola vez por los pecados, el justo por los injustos, para llevarnos a Dios, siendo a la verdad muerto en la carne, pero vivificado en espíritu;

19 I n which He went and preached to the spirits in prison,

en el cual también fue y predicó a los espíritus encarcelados,

20 w ho long before in the days of Noah had been disobedient, when God’s patience waited during the building of the ark in which a few, actually eight in number, were saved through water.

los que en otro tiempo desobedecieron, cuando una vez esperaba la paciencia de Dios en los días de Noé, mientras se preparaba el arca, en la cual pocas personas, es decir, ocho, fueron salvadas a través del agua.

21 A nd baptism, which is a figure, does now also save you, not by the removing of outward body filth, but by the answer of a good and clear conscience (inward cleanness and peace) before God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

El bautismo que corresponde a esto ahora nos salva (no quitando las inmundicias de la carne, sino como respuesta de una buena conciencia hacia Dios) por la resurrección de Jesucristo,

22 h as now entered into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels and authorities and powers made subservient to Him.

quien habiendo subido al cielo está a la diestra de Dios; y a él están sometidos ángeles, autoridades y potestades.
