1 N ow in the twelfth month, the month of Adar, on the thirteenth day of Adar when the king’s command and his edict were about to be executed, on the day that the enemies of the Jews had planned for a massacre of them, it was turned to the contrary and the Jews had rule over those who hated them.

En el mes duodécimo, que es el mes de Adar, a los trece días del mismo mes, cuando debía ser ejecutado el mandamiento del rey y su decreto, el mismo día en que los enemigos de los judíos esperaban enseñorearse de ellos, sucedió lo contrario; porque los judíos se enseñorearon de los que los aborrecían.

2 T he Jews gathered together in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus to lay hands on such as sought their hurt; and no man could withstand them, for the fear of them had fallen upon all the peoples.

Los judíos se reunieron en sus ciudades, en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, para descargar su mano sobre los que habían procurado su mal, y nadie les pudo resistir, porque el temor de ellos había caído sobre todos los pueblos.

3 A nd all the princes of the provinces and the chief rulers and the governors and they who attended to the king’s business helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai had fallen upon them.

Y todos los príncipes de las provincias, los sátrapas, capitanes y oficiales del rey, apoyaban a los judíos; porque el temor de Mardoqueo había caído sobre ellos.

4 F or Mordecai was great in the king’s palace; and his fame went forth throughout all the provinces, for the man Mordecai became more and more powerful.

Pues Mardoqueo era grande en la casa del rey, y su fama iba por todas las provincias; Mardoqueo iba engrandeciéndose más y más.

5 S o the Jews smote all their enemies with the sword, slaughtering and destroying them, and did as they chose with those who hated them.

Y asolaron los judíos a todos sus enemigos a filo de espada, y con mortandad y destrucción, e hicieron con sus enemigos como quisieron.

6 I n Shushan, the capital itself, the Jews slew and destroyed 500 men.

En Susa, capital del reino, mataron y destruyeron los judíos a quinientos hombres.

7 A nd they killed Parshandatha,

Mataron entonces a Parsandata, Dalfón, Aspata,

8 D alphon, Aspatha, Poratha, Adalia,

Porata, Adalías, Aridata,

9 A ridatha, Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai,

Parmasta, Arisay, Ariday y Vaizata,

10 A nd Vaizatha, the ten sons of Haman son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy; but on the spoil they laid not their hands.

diez hijos de Amán hijo de Hamedatá, enemigo de los judíos; pero no tocaron sus bienes.

11 O n that day the number of those who were slain in Shushan, the capital, was brought before the king.

El mismo día se le dio cuenta al rey acerca del número de los muertos en Susa, residencia real.

12 A nd the king said to Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed 500 men in Shushan, the capital, and the ten sons of Haman. What then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is your petition? It shall be granted to you. Or what is your request further? It shall be done.

Y dijo el rey a la reina Ester: En Susa, capital del reino, los judíos han matado a quinientos hombres, y a diez hijos de Amán. ¿Qué habrán hecho en las otras provincias del rey? ¿Cuál, pues, es tu petición?, y te será concedida; ¿o qué más deseas?, y será hecho.

13 T hen said Esther, If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do tomorrow also according to this day’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.

Y respondió Ester: Si place al rey, concédase también mañana a los judíos en Susa, que hagan conforme a la ley de hoy; y que cuelguen en la horca a los diez hijos de Amán.

14 A nd the king commanded it to be done; the decree was given in Shushan, and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.

Y mandó el rey que se hiciese así. Se dio la orden en Susa, y colgaron a los diez hijos de Amán.

15 A nd the Jews that were in Shushan gathered together on the fourteenth day also of the month of Adar and slew 300 men in Shushan, but on the spoil they laid not their hands.

Y los judíos que estaban en Susa se juntaron también el catorce del mes de Adar, y mataron en Susa a trescientos hombres; pero no tocaron sus bienes. La fiesta de los Purim

16 A nd the other Jews who were in the king’s provinces gathered to defend their lives and had relief and rest from their enemies and slew of them that hated them 75, 000; but on the spoil they laid not their hands.

En cuanto a los otros judíos que estaban en las provincias del rey, también se juntaron y se pusieron en defensa de su vida, y descansaron de sus enemigos, y mataron de sus contrarios a setenta y cinco mil; pero no tocaron sus bienes.

17 T his was done on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, and on the fourteenth day they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

Esto fue en el día trece del mes de Adar, y reposaron en el día catorce del mismo, y lo hicieron día de banquete y de alegría.

18 B ut the Jews who were in Shushan assembled on the thirteenth day and on the fourteenth, and on the fifteenth day they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

Pero los judíos que estaban en Susa se juntaron el día trece y el catorce del mismo mes; y el quince del mismo reposaron, y lo hicieron día de banquete y de regocijo.

19 T herefore the Jews of the villages, who dwell in the unwalled towns, make the fourteenth day of the month of Adar a day of gladness and feasting, a holiday, and a day for sending choice portions to one another.

Por esto, los judíos aldeanos que habitan en las villas sin muro, hacen a los catorce del mes de Adar el día de alegría y de banquete, un día de regocijo, y para enviar porciones cada uno a su vecino.

20 A nd Mordecai recorded these things, and he sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, both near and far,

Y escribió Mardoqueo estas cosas, y envió cartas a todos los judíos que estaban en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, cercanos y distantes,

21 T o command them to keep the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and also the fifteenth, yearly,

ordenándoles que celebrasen el día decimocuarto del mes de Adar, y el decimoquinto del mismo, cada año,

22 A s the days on which the Jews got rest from their enemies, and as the month which was turned for them from sorrow to gladness and from mourning into a holiday—that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days of sending choice portions to one another and gifts to the poor.

como días en que los judíos tuvieron paz de sus enemigos, y como el mes en que la tristeza se les cambió en alegría, y el luto en día bueno; que los hiciesen días de banquete y de gozo, y para enviar porciones cada uno a su vecino, y dádivas a los pobres.

23 S o the Jews undertook to do as they had begun and as Mordecai had written to them—

Y los judíos aceptaron hacer, según habían comenzado, lo que les escribió Mardoqueo.

24 B ecause Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to crush and consume and destroy them.

Porque Amán, hijo de Hamedatá agagueo, enemigo de todos los judíos, había ideado contra los judíos un plan para destruirlos, y había echado el Pur, que quiere decir suerte, para consumirlos y acabar con ellos.

25 B ut when Esther brought the matter before the king, he commanded in writing that Haman’s wicked scheme which he had devised against the Jews should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

Mas cuando Ester vino a la presencia del rey, él ordenó por carta que el perverso designio que aquél había tramado contra los judíos recayera sobre su cabeza; y que colgaran a él y a sus hijos en la horca.

26 T herefore they called these days Purim, after the name Pur. Therefore, because of all that was in this letter and what they had faced in this matter and what had happened to them,

Por esto llamaron a estos días Purim, por el nombre Pur. Y debido a las palabras de esta carta, y por lo que ellos vieron sobre esto, y por las noticias que les habían llegado,

27 T he Jews ordained and took it upon themselves and their descendants and all who joined them that without fail every year they would keep these two days at the appointed time and as it was written,

los judíos establecieron y se comprometieron a sí mismos, a su descendencia y a todos los allegados a ellos, a que no dejarían de celebrar estos dos días según está escrito tocante a ellos, conforme a su tiempo cada año;

28 T hat these days should be remembered (imprinted on their minds) and kept throughout every generation in every family, province, and city, and that these days of Purim should never cease from among the Jews, nor the commemoration of them cease among their descendants.

y que estos días serían recordados y celebrados, de generación en generación, por todas las familias, provincias y ciudades; que estos días de Purim no dejarían de ser guardados por los judíos, y que su descendencia jamás dejaría de recordarlos.

29 T hen Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, with Mordecai the Jew, gave full power, confirming this second letter about Purim.

Y la reina Ester hija de Abihayil, y Mardoqueo el judío, suscribieron con plena autoridad esta segunda carta referente a los Purim.

30 A nd letters were sent to all the Jews, to the 127 provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, in words of peace and truth,

Y fueron enviadas cartas a todos los judíos, a las ciento veintisiete provincias del rey Asuero, con palabras de paz y de verdad,

31 T o confirm that these days of Purim should be observed at their appointed times, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had commanded, and as they had ordained for themselves and for their descendants in the matter of their fasts and their lamenting.

para confirmar estos días de Purim en sus tiempos señalados, según les había ordenado Mardoqueo el judío y la reina Ester, y según ellos se habían comprometido a sí mismos y a su descendencia, para conmemorar el fin de los ayunos y de su clamor.

32 A nd the command of Esther confirmed these observances of Purim, and it was written in the book.

Y el mandamiento de Ester confirmó estas celebraciones acerca de los Purim, y esto fue registrado en un libro.
