1 N ow in the twelfth month, the month of Adar, on the thirteenth day of Adar when the king’s command and his edict were about to be executed, on the day that the enemies of the Jews had planned for a massacre of them, it was turned to the contrary and the Jews had rule over those who hated them.

En el mes doce (es decir, el mes de Adar ), el día trece cuando estaban para ejecutarse el mandato y edicto del rey, el mismo día que los enemigos de los Judíos esperaban obtener dominio sobre ellos, sucedió lo contrario, porque fueron los Judíos los que obtuvieron dominio sobre los que los odiaban.

2 T he Jews gathered together in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus to lay hands on such as sought their hurt; and no man could withstand them, for the fear of them had fallen upon all the peoples.

Se reunieron los Judíos en sus ciudades por todas las provincias del rey Asuero para echar mano a los que buscaban hacerles daño. Nadie podía oponérseles, porque el temor a ellos había caído sobre todos los pueblos.

3 A nd all the princes of the provinces and the chief rulers and the governors and they who attended to the king’s business helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai had fallen upon them.

Y todos los príncipes de las provincias, los sátrapas, los gobernadores y los que manejaban los negocios del rey ayudaron a los Judíos, porque el temor a Mardoqueo había caído sobre ellos.

4 F or Mordecai was great in the king’s palace; and his fame went forth throughout all the provinces, for the man Mordecai became more and more powerful.

Mardoqueo era grande en la casa del rey, y su fama se había extendido por todas las provincias, porque Mardoqueo se engrandecía más y más.

5 S o the Jews smote all their enemies with the sword, slaughtering and destroying them, and did as they chose with those who hated them.

Los Judíos hirieron a todos sus enemigos a filo de espada, con matanza y destrucción; e hicieron lo que quisieron con los que los odiaban.

6 I n Shushan, the capital itself, the Jews slew and destroyed 500 men.

En la fortaleza de Susa los Judíos mataron y destruyeron a 500 hombres,

7 A nd they killed Parshandatha,

también a Parsandata, Dalfón, Aspata,

8 D alphon, Aspatha, Poratha, Adalia,

Porata, Adalía, Aridata,

9 A ridatha, Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai,

Parmasta, Arisai, Aridai y Vaizata,

10 A nd Vaizatha, the ten sons of Haman son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy; but on the spoil they laid not their hands.

los diez hijos de Amán, hijo de Hamedata, enemigo de los Judíos; pero no echaron mano a sus bienes.

11 O n that day the number of those who were slain in Shushan, the capital, was brought before the king.

Aquel mismo día comunicaron al rey el número de los que fueron muertos en la fortaleza de Susa.

12 A nd the king said to Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed 500 men in Shushan, the capital, and the ten sons of Haman. What then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is your petition? It shall be granted to you. Or what is your request further? It shall be done.

Y el rey dijo a la reina Ester: “En la fortaleza de Susa los Judíos han matado y exterminado a 500 hombres y a los diez hijos de Amán. ¡Qué habrán hecho en las demás provincias del rey! ¿Cuál es tu petición ahora ? Pues te será concedida. ¿Qué más quieres? También te será hecho.”

13 T hen said Esther, If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do tomorrow also according to this day’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.

Entonces Ester dijo: “Si le place al rey, que mañana también se conceda a los Judíos que están en Susa hacer conforme al edicto de hoy; y que los diez hijos de Amán sean colgados en la horca.”

14 A nd the king commanded it to be done; the decree was given in Shushan, and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.

El rey ordenó que así se hiciera; y un edicto fue promulgado en Susa, y los diez hijos de Amán fueron colgados.

15 A nd the Jews that were in Shushan gathered together on the fourteenth day also of the month of Adar and slew 300 men in Shushan, but on the spoil they laid not their hands.

Los Judíos que se hallaban en Susa se reunieron también el día catorce del mes de Adar y mataron a 300 hombres en Susa, pero no echaron mano a sus bienes. La Fiesta de Purim

16 A nd the other Jews who were in the king’s provinces gathered to defend their lives and had relief and rest from their enemies and slew of them that hated them 75, 000; but on the spoil they laid not their hands.

Los demás Judíos que se hallaban en las provincias del rey se reunieron para defender sus vidas y librarse de sus enemigos. Mataron a 75, 000 de los que los odiaban, pero no echaron mano a sus bienes.

17 T his was done on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, and on the fourteenth day they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

Esto sucedió el día trece del mes de Adar, y el día catorce descansaron, y lo proclamaron día de banquete y de regocijo.

18 B ut the Jews who were in Shushan assembled on the thirteenth day and on the fourteenth, and on the fifteenth day they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

Pero los Judíos que se hallaban en Susa se reunieron el trece y el catorce del mismo mes, y descansaron el día quince y lo proclamaron día de banquete y de regocijo.

19 T herefore the Jews of the villages, who dwell in the unwalled towns, make the fourteenth day of the month of Adar a day of gladness and feasting, a holiday, and a day for sending choice portions to one another.

Por eso los Judíos de las áreas rurales, que habitan en las ciudades abiertas (sin murallas), proclaman el día catorce del mes de Adar día festivo para regocijarse, hacer banquetes y enviarse porciones de comida unos a otros.

20 A nd Mordecai recorded these things, and he sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, both near and far,

Entonces Mardoqueo escribió estos hechos, y envió cartas a todos los Judíos que se hallaban en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, tanto cercanas como lejanas,

21 T o command them to keep the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and also the fifteenth, yearly,

ordenándoles que celebraran anualmente el día catorce del mes de Adar, y el día quince del mismo mes.

22 A s the days on which the Jews got rest from their enemies, and as the month which was turned for them from sorrow to gladness and from mourning into a holiday—that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days of sending choice portions to one another and gifts to the poor.

Porque en esos días los Judíos se libraron de sus enemigos, y fue para ellos un mes que se convirtió de tristeza en alegría y de duelo en día festivo. Los harían días de banquete y de regocijo, para que se enviaran porciones de comida unos a otros e hicieran donativos a los pobres.

23 S o the Jews undertook to do as they had begun and as Mordecai had written to them—

Así los Judíos llevaron a cabo lo que habían comenzado a hacer, y lo que Mardoqueo les había escrito.

24 B ecause Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to crush and consume and destroy them.

Pues Amán, hijo de Hamedata, el Agagueo, enemigo de todos los Judíos, había hecho planes contra los Judíos para destruirlos, y había echado el Pur, es decir, la suerte, para su ruina y destrucción.

25 B ut when Esther brought the matter before the king, he commanded in writing that Haman’s wicked scheme which he had devised against the Jews should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

Pero cuando esto llegó al conocimiento del rey, éste ordenó por carta que el perverso plan que Amán había tramado contra los Judíos recayera sobre su cabeza, y que él y sus hijos fueran colgados en la horca.

26 T herefore they called these days Purim, after the name Pur. Therefore, because of all that was in this letter and what they had faced in this matter and what had happened to them,

Por eso estos días son llamados Purim (Suertes), por el nombre Pur. Y a causa de las instrucciones en esta carta, tanto por lo que habían visto sobre este asunto y por lo que les había acontecido,

27 T he Jews ordained and took it upon themselves and their descendants and all who joined them that without fail every year they would keep these two days at the appointed time and as it was written,

los Judíos establecieron e hicieron una costumbre para ellos, para sus descendientes y para todos los que se aliaban con ellos, que no dejarían de celebrar estos dos días conforme a su ordenanza y conforme a su tiempo señalado cada año.

28 T hat these days should be remembered (imprinted on their minds) and kept throughout every generation in every family, province, and city, and that these days of Purim should never cease from among the Jews, nor the commemoration of them cease among their descendants.

Para que estos días fueran recordados y celebrados por todas las generaciones, por cada familia, cada provincia y cada ciudad; y que estos días de Purim no dejaran de celebrarse entre los Judíos, ni su memoria se extinguiera entre sus descendientes.

29 T hen Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, with Mordecai the Jew, gave full power, confirming this second letter about Purim.

Entonces la reina Ester, hija de Abihail, y el Judío Mardoqueo escribieron con toda autoridad para confirmar esta segunda carta acerca de Purim.

30 A nd letters were sent to all the Jews, to the 127 provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, in words of peace and truth,

Y se enviaron cartas a todos los Judíos, a las 127 provincias del reino de Asuero, palabras de paz y de verdad,

31 T o confirm that these days of Purim should be observed at their appointed times, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had commanded, and as they had ordained for themselves and for their descendants in the matter of their fasts and their lamenting.

para establecer estos días de Purim en sus tiempos señalados, tal como habían establecido para ellos el Judío Mardoqueo y la reina Ester, según habían fijado para ellos y sus descendientes, con instrucciones para sus tiempos de ayuno y de lamentaciones.

32 A nd the command of Esther confirmed these observances of Purim, and it was written in the book.

El mandato de Ester estableció estas costumbres acerca de Purim, y esto fue escrito en el libro.
