1 N ow when Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had built the wall and that there was no breach left in it, although at that time I had not set up the doors in the gates,

Cuando se les informó a Sanbalat, a Tobías, a Gesem el Arabe y a los demás enemigos nuestros que yo había reedificado la muralla y que no quedaba ninguna brecha en ella (aunque en aquel tiempo yo no había asentado todavía las hojas en las puertas ),

2 S anballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, Come, let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they intended to do me harm.

Sanbalat y Gesem enviaron a decirme: “Ven, reunámonos en Quefirim en el llano de Ono.” Pero ellos tramaban hacerme daño.

3 A nd I sent messengers to them, saying, I am doing a great work and cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave to come down to you?

Y les envié mensajeros, diciéndoles: “Yo estoy haciendo una gran obra y no puedo descender. ¿Por qué ha de detenerse la obra mientras la dejo y desciendo a ustedes?”

4 T hey sent to me four times this way, and I answered them as before.

Cuatro veces me enviaron mensajes en la misma forma, y en cada ocasión yo les respondí de la misma manera.

5 T hen Sanballat sent his servant to me again the fifth time with an open letter.

Entonces Sanbalat, por quinta vez, me envió su siervo en la misma forma, con una carta abierta en su mano.

6 I n it was written: It is reported among the neighboring nations, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews plan to rebel; therefore you are building the wall, that you may be their king, according to the report.

En ella estaba escrito: “Se ha oído entre las naciones, y Gasmu dice, que tú y los Judíos están tramando rebelarse; por eso reedificas la muralla. Y según estos informes tú vas a ser su rey.

7 A lso you have set up prophets to announce concerning you in Jerusalem, There is a king in Judah. And now this will be reported to the king. So, come now and let us take counsel together.

También has puesto profetas para anunciar en Jerusalén en cuanto a ti: ‘Un rey está en Judá.’ Y ahora llegarán a oídos del rey estos informes. Ahora pues, ven, consultemos juntos.”

8 I replied to him, No such things as you say have been done; you are inventing them out of your own heart and mind.

Entonces le envié un mensaje, diciéndole: “No han sucedido esas cosas que tú dices, sino que las estás inventando en tu corazón.”

9 F or they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, Their hands will be so weak that the work will not be done. But now strengthen my hands!

Porque todos ellos querían atemorizarnos, pensando: “Ellos se desanimarán con la obra y no será hecha.” Pero ahora, oh Dios, fortalece mis manos.

10 I went into the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut up. He said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you—at night they are coming to kill you.

Cuando yo entré en casa de Semaías, hijo de Delaía, hijo de Mehetabel, que estaba encerrado allí, él dijo: “Reunámonos en la casa de Dios, dentro del templo, y cerremos las puertas del templo, porque vienen a matarte, vienen de noche a matarte.”

11 B ut I said, Should such a man as I flee? And what man such as I could go into the temple and yet live? I will not go in.

Pero yo dije: “¿Huir un hombre como yo ? ¿Y acaso uno como yo entraría al templo para salvar su vida? No entraré.”

12 A nd behold, I saw that God had not sent him, but he made this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

Entonces me di cuenta de que ciertamente Dios no lo había enviado, sino que había dicho su profecía contra mí porque Tobías y Sanbalat le habían pagado.

13 H e was hired that I should be made afraid and do as he said and sin, that they might have matter for an evil report with which to taunt and reproach me.

Le pagaron por esta razón: para que yo me atemorizara y obrara de esa manera y pecara, y así ellos tuvieran un mal informe de mí y pudieran reprocharme.

14 M y God, think on Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who would have put me in fear.

Acuérdate, Dios mío, de Tobías y de Sanbalat conforme a estas obras suyas, también de la profetisa Noadías y de los demás profetas que estaban atemorizándome.

15 S o the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days.

La muralla fue terminada el veinticinco del mes de Elul, en cincuenta y dos días.

16 W hen all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us feared and fell far in their own esteem, for they saw that this work was done by our God.

Cuando se enteraron todos nuestros enemigos y lo vieron todas las naciones que estaban alrededor nuestro, decayó su ánimo; porque reconocieron que esta obra había sido hecha con la ayuda de nuestro Dios.

17 M oreover, in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah’s letters came to them.

También en aquellos días se enviaban muchas cartas de los nobles de Judá a Tobías, y de Tobías venían cartas a ellos.

18 F or many in Judah were bound by oath to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah.

Porque muchos en Judá estaban unidos a él bajo juramento porque él era yerno de Secanías, hijo de Ara, y su hijo Johanán se había casado con la hija de Mesulam, hijo de Berequías.

19 A lso they spoke of good deeds before me and told him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to frighten me.

Además, hablaban de sus buenas obras en mi presencia y a él le informaban de mis palabras. Y Tobías me enviaba cartas para atemorizarme.
