1 W hen you go forth to battle against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than your own, do not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you.

“Cuando salgas a la batalla contra tus enemigos y veas caballos y carros, y pueblo más numeroso que tú, no tengas temor de ellos; porque el Señor tu Dios que te sacó de la tierra de Egipto está contigo.

2 A nd when you come near to the battle, the priest shall approach and speak to the men,

Cuando se acerquen a la batalla, el sacerdote se llegará y hablará al pueblo,

3 A nd shall say to them, Hear, O Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies. Let not your hearts faint; fear not, and do not tremble or be terrified because of them.

y les dirá: ‘Oye, Israel, hoy ustedes se acercan a la batalla contra sus enemigos; no desmaye su corazón; no teman ni se alarmen, ni se aterroricen delante de ellos,

4 F or the Lord your God is He Who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to save you.

porque el Señor su Dios es el que va con ustedes, para pelear por ustedes contra sus enemigos, para salvarlos.’

5 A nd the officers shall speak to the people, saying, What man is there who has built a new house and has not dedicated it? Let him return to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man dedicate it.

Los oficiales hablarán al pueblo: ‘¿Quién es el hombre que ha edificado una casa nueva y no la ha estrenado ? Que salga y regrese a su casa, no sea que muera en la batalla y otro la estrene.

6 A nd what man has planted a vineyard and has not used the fruit of it? Let him also return to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man use the fruit of it.

‘¿Quién es el hombre que ha plantado una viña y no ha tomado aún de su fruto ? Que salga y regrese a su casa, no sea que muera en la batalla y otro goce de su fruto.

7 A nd what man has betrothed a wife and has not taken her? Let him return to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man take her.

¿Y quién es el hombre que está comprometido con una mujer y no se ha casado ? Que salga y regrese a su casa, no sea que muera en la batalla y otro se case con ella.’

8 A nd the officers shall speak further to the people, and say, What man is fearful and fainthearted? Let him return to his house, lest his brethren’s hearts faint as does his own.

Entonces los oficiales hablarán otra vez al pueblo, y dirán: ‘¿Quién es hombre medroso y de corazón apocado? Que salga y regrese a su casa para que no haga desfallecer el corazón de sus hermanos como desfallece el corazón suyo.’

9 A nd when the officers finish speaking to the people, they shall appoint commanders at the head of the people.

Y cuando los oficiales acaben de hablar al pueblo, nombrarán capitanes de tropas que irán a la cabeza del pueblo.

10 W hen you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.

“Cuando te acerques a una ciudad para pelear contra ella, primero le ofrecerás la paz.

11 A nd if that city makes an answer of peace to you and opens to you, then all the people found in it shall be tributary to you and they shall serve you.

Y si ella está de acuerdo en hacer la paz contigo y te abre sus puertas, entonces todo el pueblo que se encuentra en ella estará sujeto a ti para trabajos forzados y te servirá.

12 B ut if it refuses to make peace with you and fights against you, then you shall besiege it.

Sin embargo, si no hace la paz contigo, sino que emprende la guerra contra ti, entonces la sitiarás.

13 A nd when the Lord your God has given it into your hands, you shall smite every male there with the edge of the sword.

Cuando el Señor tu Dios la entregue en tu mano, herirás a filo de espada a todos sus hombres.

14 B ut the women, the little ones, the beasts, and all that is in the city, all the spoil in it, you shall take for yourselves; and you shall use the spoil of your enemies which the Lord your God has given you.

Sólo las mujeres y los niños, los animales y todo lo que haya en la ciudad, todos sus despojos, tomarás para ti como botín. Comerás del botín de tus enemigos, que el Señor tu Dios te ha dado.

15 S o shall you treat all the cities that are very far off from you, that do not belong to the cities of these nations.

Así harás a todas las ciudades que están muy lejos de ti, que no sean de las ciudades de las naciones cercanas.

16 B ut in the cities of these people which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes.

Pero en las ciudades de estos pueblos que el Señor tu Dios te da en heredad, no dejarás con vida nada que respire,

17 B ut you shall utterly exterminate them, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, as the Lord your God has commanded you,

sino que los destruirás por completo: a los Hititas, Amorreos, Cananeos, Ferezeos, Heveos y Jebuseos, tal como el Señor tu Dios te ha mandado,

18 S o that they may not teach you all the abominable practices they have carried on for their gods, and so cause you to sin against the Lord your God.

para que ellos no les enseñen a ustedes a imitar todas las abominaciones que ellos han hecho con sus dioses y no pequen contra el Señor su Dios.

19 W hen you besiege a city for a long time, making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by using an ax on them, for you can eat their fruit; you must not cut them down, for is the tree of the field a man, that it should be besieged by you?

“Cuando sities una ciudad por muchos días, peleando contra ella para tomarla, no destruirás sus árboles metiendo el hacha contra ellos; no los talarás, pues de ellos puedes comer. Porque, ¿es acaso el árbol del campo un hombre para que le pongas sitio?

20 O nly the trees which you know are not trees for food you may destroy and cut down, that you may build siege works against the city that makes war with you until it falls.

Sólo los árboles que sabes que no dan fruto podrás destruir y talar, para construir máquinas de sitio contra la ciudad que está en guerra contigo, hasta que caiga.
