1 I n like manner, you married women, be submissive to your own husbands, so that even if any do not obey the Word, they may be won over not by discussion but by the lives of their wives,

2 W hen they observe the pure and modest way in which you conduct yourselves, together with your reverence.

vì thấy cách ăn ở của chị em là tinh sạch và cung kính.

3 L et not yours be the external adorning with interweaving and knotting of the hair, the wearing of jewelry, or changes of clothes;

Chớ tìm kiếm sự trang sức bề ngoài, như gióc tóc, đeo đồ vàng, mặc áo quần lòa loẹt;

4 B ut let it be the inward adorning and beauty of the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible and unfading charm of a gentle and peaceful spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

nhưng hãy tìm kiếm sự trang sức bề trong giấu ở trong lòng, tức là sự tinh sạch chẳng hư nát của tâm thần dịu dàng im lặng, ấy là giá quí trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời.

5 F or it was thus that the pious women of old who hoped in God were to beautify themselves and were submissive to their husbands.

Vì các bà thánh xưa kia, trông cậy Đức Chúa Trời, vâng phục chồng mình, đều trau giồi mình dường ấy;

6 I t was thus that Sarah obeyed Abraham calling him lord (master, leader, authority). And you are now her true daughters if you do right and let nothing terrify you.

7 I n the same way you married men should live considerately with, with an intelligent recognition, honoring the woman as the weaker, but are joint heirs of the grace (God’s unmerited favor) of life, in order that your prayers may not be hindered and cut off.

Hỡi người làm chồng, hãy tỏ điều khôn ngoan ra trong sự ăn ở với vợ mình, như là với giống yếu đuối hơn; vì họ sẽ cùng anh em hưởng phước sự sống, nên phải kính nể họ, hầu cho không điều gì làm rối loạn sự cầu nguyện của anh em.

8 F inally, all should be of one and the same mind (united in spirit), sympathizing, loving as brethren, compassionate and courteous (tenderhearted and humble).

Rốt lại, hết thảy anh em phải đồng lòng đầy thương xót và tình yêu anh em, có lòng nhơn từ và đức khiêm nhường.

9 N ever return evil for evil or insult for insult (scolding, tongue-lashing, berating), but on the contrary blessing. For know that to this you have been called, that you may yourselves inherit a blessing.

Đừng lấy ác trả ác, cũng đừng lấy rủa sả trả rủa sả; trái lại phải chúc phước, ấy vì điều đó mà anh em được gọi để hưởng phước lành.

10 F or let him who wants to enjoy life and see good days keep his tongue free from evil and his lips from guile (treachery, deceit).

Vả, Ai muốn yêu sự sống Và thấy ngày tốt lành, Thì phải giữ gìn miệng lưỡi, Đừng nói điều ác và lời gian dảo;

11 L et him turn away from wickedness and shun it, and let him do right. Let him search for peace (harmony; undisturbedness from fears, agitating passions, and moral conflicts) and seek it eagerly.

Phải lánh điều dữ, làm điều lành, Tìm sự hòa bình mà đuổi theo,

12 F or the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous (those who are upright and in right standing with God), and His ears are attentive to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who practice evil.

Vì mắt Chúa đoái trông người công bình, Tai Ngài lóng nghe lời cầu nguyện người, Nhưng mặt Chúa sấp lại nghịch với kẻ làm ác.

13 N ow who is there to hurt you if you are zealous followers of that which is good?

Ví bằng anh em sốt sắng làm lành thì có ai làm dữ lại cho anh em?

14 B ut even in case you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, blessed (happy, to be envied). Do not dread or be afraid of their threats, nor be disturbed.

Nếu anh em phải vì sự công bình mà chịu khổ, ấy thật là có phước. Chớ sợ điều họ sợ và đừng rối trí;

15 B ut in your hearts set Christ apart as holy as Lord. Always be ready to give a logical defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope that is in you, but do it courteously and respectfully.

nhưng hãy tôn Đấng Christ, là Chúa, làm thánh trong lòng mình. Hãy thường thường sẵn sàng để trả lời mọi kẻ hỏi lẽ về sự trông cậy trong anh em, song phải hiền hòa và kính sợ,

16 y our conscience is entirely clear ( unimpaired), so that, when you are falsely accused as evildoers, those who threaten you abusively and revile your right behavior in Christ may come to be ashamed.

phải có lương tâm tốt, hầu cho những kẻ gièm chê cách ăn ở lành của anh em trong Đấng Christ biết mình xấu hổ trong sự mà anh em đã bị nói hành;

17 F or better to suffer for doing right, if that should be God’s will, than to suffer for doing wrong.

vì nếu ý muốn Đức Chúa Trời dường ấy, thì thà làm điều thiện mà chịu khổ, còn hơn làm điều ác mà chịu khổ vậy.

18 F or Christ died for sins once for all, the Righteous for the unrighteous (the Just for the unjust, the Innocent for the guilty), that He might bring us to God. In His human body He was put to death, but He was made alive in the spirit,

Vả, Đấng Christ cũng vì tội lỗi chịu chết một lần, là Đấng công bình thay cho kẻ không công bình, để dẫn chúng ta đến cùng Đức Chúa Trời; về phần xác thịt thì Ngài đã chịu chết, nhưng về phần linh hồn thì được sống.

19 I n which He went and preached to the spirits in prison,

Aáy bởi đồng một linh hồn đó, Ngài đi giảng cho các linh hồn bị tù,

20 w ho long before in the days of Noah had been disobedient, when God’s patience waited during the building of the ark in which a few, actually eight in number, were saved through water.

tức là kẻ bội nghịch thuở trước, về thời kỳ Nô-ê, khi Đức Chúa Trời nhịn nhục chờ đợi, chiếc tàu đóng nên, trong đó có ít người được cứu bởi nước, là chỉ có tám người.

21 A nd baptism, which is a figure, does now also save you, not by the removing of outward body filth, but by the answer of a good and clear conscience (inward cleanness and peace) before God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Phép báp-tem bây giờ bèn là ảnh tượng của sự ấy để cứu anh em, phép ấy chẳng phải sự làm sạch ô uế của thân thể, nhưng một sự liên lạc lương tâm tốt với Đức Chúa Trời, bởi sự sống lại của Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ,

22 h as now entered into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels and authorities and powers made subservient to Him.

là Đấng đã được lên trời, nay ngự bên hữu Đức Chúa Trời, các thiên sứ, các vương hầu, các quyền thế thảy đều phục Ngài.
