1 T he word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him bound in chains among all who were carried away captive from Jerusalem and Judah, who were taken as exiles to Babylon.

Sau khi Nê-bu-xa -A-đan, làm đầu thị vệ, tha Giê-rê-mi ra tại Ra-ma, có lời nầy phán cùng người. Khi Nê-bu-xa -A-đan sai tìm, thì Giê-rê-mi đương bị xiềng ở giữa những phu tù khác của Giê-ru-sa-lem và Giu-đa mà người ta bắt đem qua Ba-by-lôn.

2 A nd the captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, The Lord your God pronounced evil upon this place.

Quan làm đầu thị vệ sai dẫn Giê-rê-mi đến và nói rằng: Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời ngươi đã rao tai nạn ấy cho chỗ nầy;

3 N ow the Lord has brought it about and has done as He said: because you have sinned against the Lord and have not obeyed His voice, therefore this thing has come upon you.

rồi Đức Giê-hô-va đã làm y như Ngài đã phán, vì các ngươi phạm tội nghịch cùng Đức Giê-hô-va và không vâng theo tiếng Ngài; nên sự nầy đã xảy đến cho các ngươi.

4 N ow, see, I am freeing you today from the chains upon your hands. If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will keep an eye on you and look after you well. But if it seems bad to you to come with me to Babylon, then do not do it. Behold, all the land is before you; wherever it seems good, right, and convenient for you to go, go there.

Nhưng ngươi thấy rằng ngày nay ta cứu ngươi thoát khỏi xiềng nơi tay ngươi. Nếu ngươi cho đi với ta sang Ba-by-lôn là phải, thì hãy đi, ta sẽ săn sóc ngươi. Nếu ngươi cho đi với ta sang Ba-by-lôn là không phải, thì đừng đi; nầy, khắp đất ở trước mặt ngươi, ngươi coi đâu tốt và đi đâu phải, thì đi đó.

5 W hile was hesitating, said, Go back then to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people; or go wherever it seems right for you to go. So the captain of the guard gave him an allowance of food and a present and let him go.

Vì Giê-rê-mi còn chưa trở về, nên Nê-bu-xa -A-đan tiếp thêm rằng: Hãy về cùng con trai A-hi-cam, cháu Sa-phan, là Ghê-đa-lia, tức người mà vua Ba-by-lôn đã lập làm tổng đốc các thành Giu-đa; hãy ở cùng người giữa dân sự, hay là ngươi thích ý đi đâu thì đi đó. Đoạn, quan làm đầu thị vệ cho người lương thực cùng lễ vật, và thả đi.

6 T hen Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and dwelt with him among the people who were left in the land.

Giê-rê-mi bèn đến cùng Ghê-đa-lia, con trai A-hi-cam, ở Mích-ba, và ở với người giữa dân sự còn sót lại trong đất.

7 N ow when all the captains of the forces that were in the open country and their men heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah son of Ahikam governor in the land and had committed to him men, women, and children, those of the poorest of the land who had not been taken into exile to Babylon,

Phàm những người đầu đảng còn giữ chốn thôn quê cùng thủ hạ mình nghe rằng vua Ba-by-lôn đã lập Ghê-đa-lia, con trai A-hi-cam, làm tổng đốc trong đất, và nghe vua đã giao phó cho người những đờn ông, đờn bà, trẻ con, cùng những kẻ rất nghèo khó trong đất, chưa bị đem qua Ba-by-lôn làm phu tù.

8 T hey went to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

Họ bèn đến cùng Ghê-đa-lia tại Mích-ba. Aáy là Ích-ma-ên con trai Nê-tha-nia, Giô-ha-nan và Giô-na-than, con trai Ca-rê-át, Sê-ra-gia, con trai Tan-hu-mết, các con trai của Ê-phai ở Nê-tô-pha, và Giê-xa-nia, con trai người Ma -a-ca, cùng những người đồng đi với họ.

9 A nd Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, swore to them and their men, saying, Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans; dwell in land and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.

Ghê-đa-lia, con trai A-hi-cam, cháu Sa-phan, dùng lời thề mà hứa với các người ấy cùng thủ hạ họ rằng: Chớ ngại làm tôi người Canh-đê; hãy ở trong đất và làm tôi vua Ba-by-lôn, thì các vua Ba-by-lôn, thì các ngươi sẽ được ích.

10 A s for me, I will dwell at Mizpah to stand before the Chaldeans who come to us; but as for you, gather the juice, summer fruits and oil, and store them in your utensils, and dwell in your cities that you have seized.

Về phần ta, nầy, ta sẽ ở lại Mích-ba, đặng chầu những người Canh-đê sẽ đến đây. Nhưng các ngươi hãy thâu rượu, trái mùa hạ, và dầu; hãy đựng vào bình các ngươi, và lập nghiệp trong các thành mình đã chiếm lấy.

11 L ikewise, when all the Jews who were in Moab and among the people of Ammon and in Edom and who were in all the other countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had set over them Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,

Hết thảy người Giu-đa ở trong Mô-áp, giữa con cái Am-môn, trong Ê-đôm và các xứ, nghe vua Ba-by-lôn đã để mấy người còn sót ở lại trong Giu-đa, và nghe đã đặt Ghê-đa-lia, con trai A-hi-cam, cháu Sa-phan, làm tổng đốc.

12 T hen all the Jews returned from all the places to which they had been driven and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, and gathered a great abundance of juice and summer fruits.

Các người Giu-đa đó bèn từ các nơi mình đã bị đuổi đến mà trở về trong đất Giu-đa, đến cùng Ghê-đa-lia tại Mích-ba, thâu rượu và trái mùa hạ nhiều lắm.

13 M oreover, Johanan son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces that were in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah

Bấy giờ Giô-ha-nan, con trai Ca-rê-át, và các người đầu đảng còn giữ chốn thôn quê, đều đến tìm Ghê-đa-lia, tại Mích-ba, và nói cùng người rằng:

14 A nd said to him, Do you know that Baalis king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life? But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.

15 T hen Johanan son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray you, and I will slay Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and no man will know it. Why should he slay you and cause all the Jews who are gathered to you to be scattered and the remnant of Judah to perish?

Giô-ha-nan, con trai Ca-rê-át, bèn nói kín cùng Ghê-đa-lia tại Mích-ba rằng: Xin cho tôi đi, tôi sẽ giết Ích-ma-ên, con trai Nê-tha-nia, mà không ai biết hết. Làm sao để nó cất lấy mạng sống ông, hầu cho mọi người Giu-đa nhóm họp xung quanh ông sẽ tan lạc, và dân sót của Giu-đa chết mất?

16 B ut Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, You shall not do this thing, for you speak falsely of Ishmael.

Nhưng Ghê-đa-lia, con trai A-hi-cam, trả lời cho Giô-ha-nên, con trai Ca-rê-át, rằng: Chớ làm điều đó; vì sự ngươi nói về Ích-ma-ên là dối trá.
