1 N ow about this time, when the number of the disciples was greatly increasing, complaint was made by the Hellenists (the Greek-speaking Jews) against the Hebrews because their widows were being overlooked and neglected in the daily ministration (distribution of relief).

Trong lúc đó, bởi số môn đồ càng thêm lên, nên người Hê-lê-nít phàn nàn nghịch cùng người Hê-bơ-rơ, vì những người góa bụa của họ đã bị bỏ bê trong sự cấp phát hằng ngày.

2 S o the Twelve convened the multitude of the disciples and said, It is not seemly or desirable or right that we should have to give up or neglect the Word of God in order to attend to serving at tables and superintending the distribution of food.

Mười hai sứ đồ bèn gọi hết thảy môn đồ nhóm lại, mà nói rằng: Bỏ sự dạy đạo Đức Chúa Trời mà giúp việc bàn tiệc thật chẳng xứng hợp.

3 T herefore select out from among yourselves, brethren, seven men of good and attested character and repute, full of the Spirit and wisdom, whom we may assign to look after this business and duty.

Vậy, anh em hãy chọn trong bọn mình bảy người có danh tốt, đầy dẫy Đức Thánh Linh và trí khôn, rồi chúng ta sẽ giao việc nầy cho.

4 B ut we will continue to devote ourselves steadfastly to prayer and the ministry of the Word.

Còn chúng ta sẽ cứ chuyên lo về sự cầu nguyện và chức vụ giảng đạo.

5 A nd the suggestion pleased the whole assembly, and they selected Stephen, a man full of faith (a strong and welcome belief that Jesus is the Messiah) and full of and controlled by the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte (convert) from Antioch.

Cả hội đều lấy lời đó làm đẹp lòng, bèn cử Ê-tiên, là người đầy đức tin và Đức Thánh Linh, Phi-líp, Bô-cô-rơ, Ni-ca-no, Ti-môn, Ba-mê-na và Ni-cô-la, là người An-ti-ốt mới theo đạo Giu-đa;

6 T hese they presented to the apostles, who after prayer laid their hands on them.

và trình bảy người đó cho các sứ đồ; các sứ đồ cầu nguyện rồi, thì đặt tay lên.

7 A nd the message of God kept on spreading, and the number of disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem; and a large number of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Đạo Đức Chúa Trời càng ngày càng tràn ra, số môn đồ tại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem thêm lên nhiều lắm. Cũng có rất nhiều thầy tế lễ vâng theo đạo nữa.

8 N ow Stephen, full of grace (divine blessing and favor) and power (strength and ability) worked great wonders and signs (miracles) among the people.

Ê-tiên được đầy ơn và quyền làm dấu kỳ phép lạ rất lớn trong dân.

9 H owever, some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (freed Jewish slaves), as it was called, and of the Cyrenians and of the Alexandrians and of those from Cilicia and Asia, arose to debate and dispute with Stephen.

Nhưng có mấy hội viên của nhà hội gọi là nhà hội của bọn được tự do, với những người quê ở Sy-ren, người quê ở A-léc-xan-đơ, cùng người Giu-đa ở xứ Si-li-si và xứ A-si, nổi lên mà cãi lẫy cùng Ê-tiên.

10 B ut they were not able to resist the intelligence and the wisdom and the Spirit with which and by Whom he spoke.

Song chúng không chống lại nổi với trí khôn người cùng với Đức Thánh Linh, là Đấng người nhờ mà nói

11 S o they instigated and instructed men to say, We have heard this man speak, using slanderous and abusive and blasphemous language against Moses and God.

bèn xui xiểm mấy người đặng nói rằng: chúng ta đã nghe người nói ra những lời phạm đến Môi-se và Đức Chúa Trời.

12 t hey incited the people as well as the elders and the scribes, and they came upon Stephen and arrested him and took him before the council (Sanhedrin).

Chúng xúi dân sự, các trưởng lão và các thầy thông giáo, rồi xông vào người, dùng sức mạnh bắt và điệu đến trước tòa công luận.

13 A nd they brought forward false witnesses who asserted, This man never stops making statements against this sacred place and the Law;

Chúng đặt ra những kẻ chứng dối, nói rằng: người nầy hằng nói những lời phạm đến nơi thánh và luật pháp.

14 F or we have heard him say that this Jesus the Nazarene will tear down and destroy this place, and will alter the institutions and usages which Moses transmitted to us.

Vì chưng chúng ta đã nghe người nói rằng Jêsus ở Na-xa-rét nầy sẽ phá nơi đây và đổi tục lệ mà Môi-se đã truyền lại cho chúng ta.

15 T hen all who sat in the council (Sanhedrin), as they gazed intently at Stephen, saw that his face had the appearance of the face of an angel.

Bấy giờ, phàm những người ngồi tại tòa công luận đều ngó chăm Ê-tiên, thấy mặt người như mặt thiên sứ vậy.
