1 T he saying is true and irrefutable: If any man seeks the office of bishop (superintendent, overseer), he desires an excellent task (work).

Ví bằng có kẻ mong được làm giám mục, ấy là ưa muốn một việc tốt lành; lời đó là phải lắm.

2 N ow a bishop (superintendent, overseer) must give no grounds for accusation but must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, circumspect and temperate and self-controlled; sensible and well behaved and dignified and lead an orderly (disciplined) life; hospitable a capable and qualified teacher,

Vậy, người giám mục cần phải không chỗ trách được, là chồng chỉ một vợ mà thôi, có tiết độ, có tài trí, xứng đáng, hay tiếp khách và khéo dạy dỗ.

3 N ot given to wine, not combative but gentle and considerate, not quarrelsome but forbearing and peaceable, and not a lover of money.

Đừng mê rượu, cũng đừng hung bạo, nhưng phải mềm mại hòa nhã; lại đừng ham tiền bạc;

4 H e must rule his own household well, keeping his children under control, with true dignity, commanding their respect in every way and keeping them respectful.

phải khéo cai trị nhà riêng mình, giữ con cái mình cho vâng phục và ngay thật trọn vẹn;

5 F or if a man does not know how to rule his own household, how is he to take care of the church of God?

vì nếu có ai không biết cai trị nhà riêng mình, thì làm sao cai trị được Hội thánh của Đức Chúa Trời?

6 H e must not be a new convert, or he may as the result of pride fall into the condemnation that the devil did.

Người mới tin đạo không được làm giám mục, e người tự kiêu mà sa vào án phạt của ma quỉ chăng.

7 F urthermore, he must have a good reputation and be well thought of by those outside, lest he become involved in slander and incur reproach and fall into the devil’s trap.

Người giám mục lại phải được người ngoại làm chứng tốt cho, kẻo bị sỉ nhục và mắc bẫy ma quỉ.

8 I n like manner the deacons worthy of respect, not shifty and double-talkers but sincere in what they say, not given to much wine, not greedy for base gain.

Các chấp sự cũng phải cho nghiêm trọng, không được nói hai lời, không được ghiền rượu, không được tham lợi phi nghĩa,

9 T hey must possess the mystic secret of the faith with a clear conscience.

nhưng phải lấy lương tâm thanh sạch giữ lẽ mầu nhiệm của đức tin.

10 A nd let them also be tried and investigated and proved first; then, if they turn out to be above reproach, let them serve.

Những người đó cũng phải chịu thử thách trước đã, nếu không chỗ trách được thì mới được làm chức chấp sự.

11 w omen likewise must be worthy of respect and serious, not gossipers, but temperate and self-controlled, trustworthy in all things.

Vợ các chấp sự cũng phải nghiêm trọng, chớ nói xấu, phải có tiết độ và trung tín trong mọi việc.

12 L et deacons be the husbands of but one wife, and let them manage children and their own households well.

Các chấp sự chỉ nên làm chồng của một vợ mà thôi, phải khéo cai trị con cái và nhà riêng mình.

13 F or those who perform well as deacons acquire a good standing for themselves and also gain much confidence and freedom and boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Vì ai khéo làm chức vụ mình thì được bực cao trọng và lòng rất dạn dĩ trong đức tin đến Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ.

14 A lthough I hope to come to you before long, I am writing these instructions to you so that,

Ta mong mau mau đến thăm con, nhưng viết thơ nầy,

15 I f I am detained, you may know how people ought to conduct themselves in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and stay (the prop and support) of the Truth.

phòng ta có chậm đến, thì con biết làm thể nào trong nhà Đức Chúa Trời, tức là Hội thánh của Đức Chúa Trời hằng sống, trụ và nền của lẽ thật vậy.

16 A nd great and important and weighty, we confess, is the hidden truth (the mystic secret) of godliness. He '> God] was made visible in human flesh, justified and vindicated in the Spirit, was seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

Mọi người đều cho sự mầu nhiệm của sự tin kính là lớn lắm: Đấng đã được tỏ ra trong xác thịt, Thì đã được Đức Thánh Linh xưng là công bình, Được thiên sứ trông thấy, Được giảng ra cho dân ngoại, Được thiên hạ tin cậy, Được cất lên trong sự vinh hiển.
