1 I n those days when an immense crowd had gathered and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and told them,

Những ngày đó, lại có một đoàn dân đông theo Đức Chúa Jêsus. Vì chúng không có chi ăn, nên Ngài kêu các môn đồ mà phán rằng:

2 I have pity and sympathy for the people and My heart goes out to them, for they have been with Me now three days and have nothing to eat;

Ta thương xót đoàn dân nầy: vì đã ba ngày nay, không rời bỏ ta, và chẳng có chi ăn.

3 A nd if I send them away to their homes hungry, they will be feeble through exhaustion and faint along the road; and some of them have come a long way.

Nếu ta truyền cho nhịn đói trở về nơi họ ở, dọc đàng chắc sẽ kém sức, vì có mấy người đã đến từ nơi xa.

4 A nd His disciples replied to Him, How can anyone fill and satisfy with loaves of bread here in desolate and uninhabited region?

Môn đồ thưa rằng: Có thể kiếm bánh đâu được trong đồng vắng nầy cho chúng ăn no ư?

5 A nd He asked them, How many loaves have you? They said, Seven.

Ngài nói: Các ngươi có bao nhiêu bánh? Thưa: Có bảy cái.

6 A nd He commanded the multitude to recline upon the ground, and He took the seven loaves and, having given thanks, He broke them and kept on giving them to His disciples to put before, and they placed them before the crowd.

Ngài bèn biểu đoàn dân ngồi xuống đất; đoạn lấy bảy cái bánh, tạ ơn, rồi bẻ ra trao cho môn đồ để phân phát cho đoàn dân.

7 A nd they had a few small fish; and when He had praised God and given thanks and asked Him to bless them, He ordered that these also should be set before.

Môn đồ cũng có mấy con cá nhỏ; Đức Chúa Jêsus tạ ơn rồi, cũng khiến đem phân phát như vậy.

8 A nd they ate and were satisfied; and they took up seven '> large provision] baskets full of the broken pieces left over.

Ai nấy ăn no nê; rồi người ta thâu được bảy giỏ những miếng thừa.

9 A nd there were about 4, 000 people. And He dismissed them,

Và, những người ăn đó ước chừng bốn ngàn người. Đức Chúa Jêsus cho chúng về;

10 A nd at once He got into the boat with His disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha (or Magdala).

rồi liền vào thuyền với môn đồ, sang xứ Đa-ma-nu-tha.

11 T he Pharisees came and began to argue with and question Him, demanding from Him a sign (an attesting miracle from heaven) to test Him.

Có mấy người Pha-ri-si đến đó, cãi lẽ với Ngài, muốn thử Ngài, thì xin một dấu lạ từ trên trời.

12 A nd He groaned and sighed deeply in His spirit and said, Why does this generation demand a sign? Positively I say to you, no sign shall be given this generation.

Đức Chúa Jêsus than thở trong lòng mà rằng: Làm sao dòng dõi nầy xin dấu lạ? Quả thật, ta nói cùng các ngươi, họ chẳng được ban cho một dấu lạ nào.

13 A nd He went away and left them and, getting into the boat again, He departed to the other side.

Ngài bèn bỏ họ, trở vào thuyền mà qua bờ bên kia.

14 N ow they had '> completely] forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.

Vả, môn đồ quên đem bánh theo, trong thuyền chỉ có một cái bánh mà thôi.

15 A nd Jesus charged and admonished them, saying, Look out; keep on your guard and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod and the Herodians.

Ngài răn môn đồ rằng: Hãy giữ mình cẩn thận về men người Pha-ri-si, và men đãng Hê-rốt.

16 A nd they discussed it and reasoned with one another, It is because we have no bread.

Môn-đồ nói cùng nhau rằng: Aáy là vì chúng ta không có bánh.

17 A nd being aware, Jesus said to them, Why are you reasoning and saying it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet discern or understand? Are your hearts in hardness?

Nhưng Đức Chúa Jêsus biết điều đó, thì phán rằng: Sao các ngươi nói cùng nhau rằng đó là tại các ngươi không có bánh? Chớ các ngươi còn chưa nghe, chưa hiểu sao? Các ngươi có lòng cứng cỏi luôn ư?

18 H aving eyes, do you not see, and having ears, do you not hear and perceive and understand the sense of what is said? And do you not remember?

Các ngươi lại không nhớ hay sao? Có tai mà sao không nghe? Các ngươi lại không nhớ hay sao?

19 W hen I broke the five loaves for the 5, 000, how many '> small hand] baskets full of broken pieces did you take up? They said to Him, Twelve.

Khi ta bẻ năm cái bánh cho năm ngàn người, các ngươi thâu được mấy giỏ đầy bánh vụn? Thưa: Mười hai giỏ.

20 A nd the seven loaves for the 4, 000, how many '> large provision] baskets full of broken pieces did you take up? And they said to Him, Seven.

Còn khi ta bẻ bảy cái bánh cho bốn ngàn người, các ngươi thâu được bấy giỏ đầy bánh vụn? Thưa: Bảy giỏ.

21 A nd He kept repeating, Do you not yet understand?

Ngài phán: Các ngươi còn chưa hiểu sao?

22 A nd they came to Bethsaida. And brought to Him a blind man and begged Him to touch him.

Kế đó, Đức Chúa Jêsus và môn đồ đi đến làng Bết-sai-đa. Người ta đem cho Ngài một người mù và cầu xin Ngài rờ đến người.

23 A nd He caught the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village; and when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands upon him, He asked him, Do you '> possibly] see anything?

Ngài bèn nắm tay người mù, dắt ra ngoài làng, thấm nước miếng trên mắt người, đặt tay trên người, và hỏi, có thấy chi không?

24 A nd he looked up and said, I see people, but like trees, walking.

Người mù ngó lên rồi thưa rằng: Tôi thấy người ta, và nhìn họ giống như cây.

25 T hen He put His hands on his eyes again; and the man looked intently, and he was restored and saw everything distinctly '> at a distance].

Rồi Đức Chúa Jêsus lại đặt tay trên mắt người; người nhìn xem, được sáng mắt thấy rõ ràng cả thảy.

26 A nd He sent him away to his house, telling, Do not enter the village or tell anyone there.

Đức Chúa Jêsus khiến người về nhà, và truyền rằng: Đừng trở vào trong làng.

27 A nd Jesus went on with His disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He asked His disciples, Who do people say that I am?

Đức Chúa Jêsus đi khỏi đó với môn đồ mình, đến trong các làng gần thành Sê-sa-rê phi-líp. Dọc đàng, Ngài hỏi môn đồ rằng: Người ta nói ta là ai?

28 A nd they answered, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.

Thưa rằng: Kẻ thì nói là Giăng Báp-tít; người thì nói là Ê-li; kẻ thì nói một trong các đấng tiên tri.

29 A nd He asked them, But who do you yourselves say that I am? Peter replied to Him, You are the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

Ngài hỏi: Nhưng các ngươi thì nói ta là ai? Phi -e-rơ thưa rằng: Thầy là Đấng Christ.

30 A nd He charged them sharply to tell no one about Him.

Đức Chúa Jêsus bèn cấm ngặt môn đồ chớ nói sự mình cùng ai hết.

31 A nd He began to teach them that the Son of Man must of necessity suffer many things and be tested and disapproved and rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be put to death, and after three days rise again '> from death].

Bấy giờ, nước khởi sự dạy môn đồ rằng Con người phải chịu khổ nhiều, phải bị các trưởng lão, các thầy tế lễ cả, và các thầy thông giáo loại ra, phải chịu giết, sau ba ngày phải sống lại.

32 A nd He said this freely (frankly, plainly, and explicitly, making it unmistakable). And Peter took Him by the hand and led Him aside and then began to rebuke Him.

Ngài nói tỏ tường điều đó với môn đồ. Phi -e-rơ đem Ngài riêng ra, mà căn gián Ngài.

33 B ut turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, Get behind Me, Satan! For you do not have a mind intent on promoting what God wills, but what pleases men.

Nhưng Đức Chúa Jêsus xây lại ngó môn đồ, và quở Phi -e-rơ rằng: Hỡi quỉ Sa-tan, hãy lui ra đằng sau ta; vì người chẳng nghĩ đến việc Đức Chúa Trời, song nghĩ đến việc người ta.

34 A nd Jesus called the throng with His disciples and said to them, If anyone intends to come after Me, let him deny himself '> lose sight of himself and his own interests] and take up his cross, and '> joining Me as a disciple and siding with My party] follow with Me.

Đoạn, Ngài kêu dân chúng và môn đồ, mà phán rằng: Nếu ai muốn theo ta, phải liều mình, vác thập tự giá mình mà theo ta.

35 F or whoever wants to save his '> higher, spiritual, eternal] life, will lose it '> lower, natural, temporal life which is lived only on earth]; and whoever gives up his life for My sake and the Gospel’s will save it '> higher, spiritual life in the eternal kingdom of God].

Vì ai muốn cứu sự sống mình thì sẽ mất; còn ai vì cớ ta và đạo Tin Lành mà mất sự sống thì sẽ cứu.

36 F or what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his life '> in the eternal kingdom of God]?

Người nào nếu được cả thiên hạ mà mất linh hồn mình, thì có ích gì?

37 F or what can a man give as an exchange ( a compensation, a ransom, in return) for his life '> in the eternal kingdom of God]?

Hay là có người nào lấy chi mà đổi linh hồn mình ư?

38 F or whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous (unfaithful) and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory (splendor and majesty) of His Father with the holy angels.

Vì giữa dòng dõi gian dâm tội lỗi nầy, hễ ai hổ thẹn về ta và đạo ta, thì Con người sẽ hổ thẹn về kẻ ấy, khi ngự trong sự vinh hiển của Cha Ngài mà đến với các thiên sứ thánh.
