1 P aul, an apostle (special messenger) of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,

Ta, Phao-lô, theo ý muốn Đức Chúa Trời, làm sứ đồ của Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ, đặng rao truyền lời hứa của sự sống trong Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ,

2 T o Timothy, beloved child: Grace (favor and spiritual blessing), mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord!

gởi cho Ti-mô-thê, là con rất yêu dấu của ta: nguyền con được ân điển, sự thương xót, sự bình an ban cho bởi Đức Chúa Trời, là Cha, và bởi Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ, Chúa chúng ta!

3 I thank God Whom I worship with a pure conscience, in the spirit of my fathers, when without ceasing I remember you night and day in my prayers,

Ta cảm tạ Đức Chúa Trời mà ta hầu việc bằng lương tâm thanh sạch như tổ tiên ta đã làm, cả ngày lẫn đêm ta ghi nhớ con không thôi trong khi cầu nguyện.

4 A nd when, as I recall your tears, I yearn to see you so that I may be filled with joy.

Vì ta nhớ đến nước mắt con, muốn đến thăm con quá chừng, để được đầy lòng vui vẻ.

5 I am calling up memories of your sincere and unqualified faith (the leaning of your entire personality on God in Christ in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness), that first lived permanently in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am persuaded, in you also.

Ta cũng nhớ đến đức tin thành thật của con, là đức tin trước đã ở trong Lô-ít, bà nội con, và trong Ơ-nít, mẹ con, ta chắc rằng nay cũng ở trong con nữa.

6 T hat is why I would remind you to stir up (rekindle the embers of, fan the flame of, and keep burning) the gift of God, that is in you by means of the laying on of my hands '> with those of the elders at your ordination].

Vậy nên ta khuyên con hãy nhen lại ơn của Đức Chúa Trời ban cho, mà con đã nhận lãnh bởi sự đặt tay của ta.

7 F or God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.

Vì Đức Chúa Trời chẳng ban cho chúng ta tâm thần nhút nhát, bèn là tâm thần mạnh mẽ, có tình thương yêu và giè giữ.

8 D o not blush or be ashamed then, to testify to and for our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for His sake, but '> with me] take your share of the suffering of the Gospel in the power of God.

Vậy con chớ thẹn vì phải làm chứng cho Chúa chúng ta, cũng đứng lấy sự ta vì Ngài ở tù làm xấu hổ; nhưng hãy cậy quyền phép Đức Chúa Trời mà chịu khổ với Tin Lành.

9 W ho delivered and saved us and called us with a calling in itself holy and leading to holiness; not because of anything of merit that we have done, but because of and to further His own purpose and grace (unmerited favor) which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.

Aáy chính Chúa đã cứu chúng ta, đã gọi chúng ta bởi sự kêu gọi thánh, chẳng phải theo việc làm chúng ta, bèn theo ý riêng Ngài chỉ định, theo ân điển đã ban cho chúng ta trong Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ từ trước muôn đời vô cùng,

10 w hich He now has made known and has fully disclosed and made real through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, Who annulled death and made it of no effect and brought life and immortality (immunity from eternal death) to light through the Gospel.

mà bây giờ mới bày ra bởi sự hiện ra của Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ, Cứu Chúa chúng ta, Ngài đã hủy phá sự chết, dùng Tin Lành phô bày sự sống và sự không hề chết ra cho rõ ràng.

11 F or this I was appointed a herald (preacher) and an apostle (special messenger) and a teacher of the Gentiles.

Aáy là vì Tin Lành đó mà ta đã được lập làm người giảng đạo, sứ đồ và giáo sư,

12 A nd this is why I am suffering as I do. Still I am not ashamed, for I know (perceive, have knowledge of, and am acquainted with) Him Whom I have believed (adhered to and trusted in and relied on), and I am persuaded that He is able to guard and keep that which has been entrusted to me and which I have committed until that day.

ấy lại là cớ mà ta chịu khổ. Nhưng ta chẳng hổ thẹn vì biết ta đã tin Đấng nào, chắc rằng Đấng ấy có quyền phép giữ sự ta đã phó thác cho đến ngày đó.

13 H old fast and follow the pattern of wholesome and sound teaching which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.

Hãy lấy lòng tin và yêu trong Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ mà giữ lấy mẫu mực của các sự dạy dỗ có ích, là sự con đã nhận lãnh nơi ta.

14 G uard and keep the precious and excellently adapted which has been entrusted, by the Holy Spirit Who makes His home in us.

Hãy nhờ Đức Thánh Linh ngự trong chúng ta mà giữ lấy điều phó thác tốt lành.

15 Y ou already know that all who are in Asia turned away and forsook me, Phygelus and Hermogenes among them.

Con biết rằng mọi người ở xứ A-si đã lìa bỏ ta; trong số ấy có Phy-ghen và Hẹt-mô-ghen.

16 M ay the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus, for he often showed me kindness and ministered to my needs! He was not ashamed of my chains and imprisonment.

Cầu xin Chúa thương xót lấy nhà Ô-nê-si-phô-rơ, vì người đòi phen yên ủi ta, chẳng hề lấy sự ta bị xiềng xích làm xấu hổ.

17 N o, rather when he reached Rome, he searched diligently and eagerly for me and found me.

Lại còn, khi người vừa đến thành Rô-ma, đã vội vả kiếm ta, và kiếm được.

18 M ay the Lord grant to him that he may find mercy from the Lord on that day! And you know how many things he did for me and what a help he was at Ephesus.

Xin chính mình Chúa cho người tìm thấy sự thương xót của Chúa trong ngày đó! Con lại biết hơn kẻ khác, người ở Ê-phê-sô đã hầu việc ta mọi đàng.
