1 S o you, my son, be strong (strengthened inwardly) in the grace (spiritual blessing) that is in Christ Jesus.

Vậy, hỡi con, hãy cậy ân điển trong Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ mà làm cho mình mạnh mẽ.

2 A nd the which you have heard from me along with many witnesses, transmit and entrust to reliable and faithful men who will be competent and qualified to teach others also.

Những điều con đã nghe nơi ta ở trước mặt nhiều người chứng, hãy giao phó cho mấy người trung thành, cũng có tài dạy dỗ kẻ khác.

3 T ake your share of the hardships and suffering as a good (first-class) soldier of Christ Jesus.

Hãy cùng ta chịu khổ như một người lính giỏi của Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ.

4 N o soldier when in service gets entangled in the enterprises of life; his aim is to satisfy and please the one who enlisted him.

Khi một người đi ra trận, thì chẳng còn lấy việc đời lụy mình, làm vậy đặng đẹp lòng kẻ chiêu mộ mình.

5 A nd if anyone enters competitive games, he is not crowned unless he competes lawfully (fairly, according to the rules laid down).

Cùng một lẽ đó, người đấu sức trong diễn trường chỉ đấu nhau theo lệ luật thì mới được mão triều thiên.

6 t he hard-working farmer who must be the first partaker of the fruits.

Người cày ruộng đã khó nhọc thì phải trước nhứt được thâu hoa lợi.

7 T hink over these things I am saying, for the Lord will grant you full insight and understanding in everything.

Hãy hiểu rõ điều ta nói cho con, và chính Chúa sẽ ban sự khôn ngoan cho con trong mọi việc.

8 C onstantly keep in mind Jesus Christ (the Messiah) risen from the dead, descended from David, according to the good news (the Gospel) that I preach.

Hãy nhớ rằng Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ, sanh ra bởi dòng vua Đa-vít, đã từ kẻ chết sống lại, theo như Tin Lành của ta,

9 F or that I am suffering affliction and even wearing chains like a criminal. But the Word of God is not chained or imprisoned!

vì Tin Lành đó mà ta chịu khổ, rất đỗi bị trói như người phạm tội; nhưng đạo của Đức Chúa Trời không hề bị trói đâu.

10 T herefore I persevere and stand my ground with patience and endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they too may obtain salvation which is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.

Vậy nên, ta vì cớ những người được chọn mà chịu hết mọi sự, hầu cho họ cũng được sự cứu trong Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ, với sự vinh hiển đời đời.

11 T he saying is sure and worthy of confidence: If we have died with Him, we shall also live with Him.

Lời nầy chắc chắn lắm: Ví bằng chúng ta chết với Ngài, thì cũng sẽ sống với Ngài;

12 I f we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny and disown and reject Him, He will also deny and disown and reject us.

lại nếu chúng ta chịu thử thách nổi, thì sẽ cùng Ngài đồng trị; nếu chúng ta chối Ngài, thì Ngài cũng sẽ chối chúng ta;

13 I f we are faithless, He remains true (faithful to His Word and His righteous character), for He cannot deny Himself.

nếu chúng ta không thành tín, song Ngài vẫn thành tín, vì Ngài không thể tự chối mình được.

14 R emind of these facts and charge them in the presence of the Lord to avoid petty controversy over words, which does no good but upsets and undermines the faith of the hearers.

Nầy là điều con hãy nhắc lại và răn bảo trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời rằng, phải tránh sự cãi lẫy về lời nói, sự đó thật là vô dụng, chỉ hại cho kẻ nghe mà thôi.

15 S tudy and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing the Word of Truth.

Hãy chuyên tâm cho được đẹp lòng Đức Chúa Trời như người làm công không chỗ trách được, lấy lòng ngay thẳng giảng dạy lời của lẽ thật.

16 B ut avoid all empty (vain, useless, idle) talk, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness.

Nhưng phải bỏ những lời hư không phàm tục; vì những kẻ giữ điều đó càng sai lạc luôn trong đường không tin kính,

17 A nd their teaching will eat its way like cancer or spread like gangrene. So it is with Hymenaeus and Philetus,

và lời nói của họ như chùm bao ăn lan. Hy-mê-nê và Phi-lết thật như thế,

18 W ho have missed the mark and swerved from the truth by arguing that the resurrection has already taken place. They are undermining the faith of some.

họ xây bỏ lẽ thật; nói rằng sự sống lại đã đến rồi, mà phá đổ đức tin của một vài người cách như vậy.

19 B ut the firm foundation of (laid by) God stands, sure and unshaken, bearing this seal (inscription): The Lord knows those who are His, and, Let everyone who names the name of the Lord give up all iniquity and stand aloof from it.

Tuy vậy, nền vững bền của Đức Chúa Trời đã đặt vẫn còn nguyên, có mấy lời như ấn đóng rằng: Chúa biết kẻ thuộc về Ngài; lại rằng: Phàm người kêu cầu danh Chúa thì phải tránh khỏi sự gian ác.

20 B ut in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and earthenware, and some for honorable and noble and some for menial and ignoble.

Trong một nhà lớn, không những có bình vàng bình bạc mà thôi, cũng có cái bằng gỗ bằng đất nữa, thứ thì dùng việc sang, thứ thì dùng việc hèn.

21 S o whoever cleanses himself will be a vessel set apart and useful for honorable and noble purposes, consecrated and profitable to the Master, fit and ready for any good work.

Vậy, ai giữ mình cho khỏi những điều ô uế đó, thì sẽ như cái bình quí trọng, làm của thánh, có ích cho chủ mình và sẵn sàng cho mọi việc lành.

22 S hun youthful lusts and flee from them, and aim at and pursue righteousness (all that is virtuous and good, right living, conformity to the will of God in thought, word, and deed); faith, love, peace (harmony and concord with others) in fellowship with all, who call upon the Lord out of a pure heart.

Cũng hãy tránh khỏi tình dục trai trẻ, mà tìm những điều công bình, đức tin, yêu thương, hòa thuận với kẻ lấy lòng tinh sạch kêu cầu Chúa.

23 B ut refuse (shut your mind against, have nothing to do with) trifling (ill-informed, unedifying, stupid) controversies over ignorant questionings, for you know that they foster strife and breed quarrels.

Hãy cự những lời bàn luận điên dại và trái lẽ, vì biết rằng chỉ sanh ra điều tranh cạnh mà thôi.

24 A nd the servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome (fighting and contending). Instead, he must be kindly to everyone and mild-tempered; he must be a skilled and suitable teacher, patient and forbearing and willing to suffer wrong.

Vả, tôi tớ của Chúa không nên ưa sự tranh cạnh; nhưng phải ở tử tế với mọi người, có tài dạy dỗ, nhịn nhục,

25 H e must correct his opponents with courtesy and gentleness, in the hope that God may grant that they will repent and come to know the Truth,

dùng cách mềm mại mà sửa dạy những kẻ chống trả, mong rằng Đức Chúa Trời ban cho họ sự ăn năn để nhìn biết lẽ thật,

26 A nd that they may come to their senses escape out of the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him, to do His will.

và họ tỉnh ngộ mà gỡ mình khỏi lưới ma quỉ, vì đã bị ma quỉ bắt lấy đặng làm theo ý nó.
