1 – Сойди, сядь в пыли, девственная дочь Вавилона; сядь на землю, не на трон, дочь халдеев. Больше не назовут тебя нежной и утонченной.

Come down and sit in the dust, virgin-daughter of Babylon! Sit on the ground,— no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.

2 В озьми жернова, мели муку; сними свое покрывало. Подбери свои юбки, оголи свои ноги, переходи через реки.

Take the millstones, and grind meal; remove thy veil, lift up the train, uncover the leg, pass over rivers:

3 П усть обнажится твоя нагота, откроются взглядам твои срамные места. Я отомщу, никого не пощажу.

thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen. I will take vengeance, and I will meet none. …

4 Н аш Искупитель – Имя Его Господь Сил – Святой Израиля.

Our Redeemer, Jehovah of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel. …

5 – Сиди в молчании, ступай во тьму, дочь халдеев; не назовут тебя больше владычицей царств.

Sit silent, and get thee into darkness, daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no more be called, Mistress of kingdoms.

6 Р азгневался Я на народ Мой и унизил Свое наследие; Я отдал их в твои руки, и ты не явила им милосердия. Даже на стариков положила ты крайне тяжелое ярмо.

I was wroth with my people, I polluted mine inheritance, and gave them into thy hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the aged didst thou very heavily lay thy yoke;

7 Т ы сказала: «Вовеки пребуду владычицей!» Но не задумалась, не подумала о том, что может произойти.

and thou saidst, I shall be a mistress for ever; so that thou didst not take these things to heart, thou didst not remember the end thereof.

8 И так, послушай, искательница удовольствий, живущая в безопасности и говорящая себе: «Я, и нет никого другого. Никогда я не овдовею, не познаю потери детей».

And now hear this, thou voluptuous one, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thy heart, It is I, and there is none but me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know loss of children:

9 И то и другое постигнет тебя, в мгновение, в один день – утрата детей и вдовство. В полной мере постигнут они тебя, невзирая на множество твоих чародейств и великую силу твоих заклинаний.

yet these two things shall come upon thee in a moment, in one day, loss of children and widowhood; they shall come upon thee in full measure for the multitude of thy sorceries, for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

10 Т ы полагалась на свое злодейство и говорила: «Никто меня не видит». Твоя мудрость и знание сбили тебя с толку, когда ты сказала себе: «Я, и нет никого другого кроме меня».

For thou hast confided in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath seduced thee; and thou hast said in thy heart, It is I, and there is none but me.

11 П ридет к тебе беда, и не будешь знать, как ее отвести. Обрушится на тебя несчастье, и не отвратишь его выкупом. Внезапно постигнет тебя крушение, которое ты не предвидишь.

But evil shall come upon thee—thou shalt not know from whence it riseth; and mischief shall fall upon thee, which thou shalt not be able to ward off; and desolation that thou suspectest not shall come upon thee suddenly.

12 Н у что же, держись своих заклинаний и множества своих чародейств, в которых ты с юности преуспела. Может быть, получится, может быть, ужас внушишь.

Stand now with thine enchantments and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to turn them to profit, if so be thou mayest cause terror.

13 М ногочисленные советы лишь утомили тебя! Пусть встанут твои астрологи, эти звездочеты, предсказывающие по новолуниям; пусть спасут тебя от того, что тебя постигнет.

Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the interpreters of the heavens, the observers of the stars, who predict according to the new moons what shall come upon thee, stand up, and save thee.

14 В от, они как солома, палит их огонь. Самих себя не могут спасти от власти пламени. Это не угли, чтобы погреться, не костер, чтобы посидеть перед ним!

Behold, they shall be as stubble, the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, fire to sit before it.

15 В от что они для тебя – те, с кем трудилась ты, с кем торговала с юности! Каждый из них бредет в свою сторону; спасти тебя некому.

Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, they that trafficked with thee from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his own quarter; there is none to save thee.
