1 D esciende y siéntate en el polvo, virgen hija de Babilonia. Siéntate en la tierra, sin trono, hija de los caldeos, porque nunca más serás llamada tierna y delicada.

Come down and sit in the dust, virgin-daughter of Babylon! Sit on the ground,— no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.

2 T oma las piedras de molino y muele la harina; quítate el velo, despójate de la falda, descubre tus piernas, pasa los ríos.

Take the millstones, and grind meal; remove thy veil, lift up the train, uncover the leg, pass over rivers:

3 S erá descubierta tu desnudez, también será expuesta tu vergüenza; tomaré venganza y no perdonaré a hombre alguno.

thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen. I will take vengeance, and I will meet none. …

4 N uestro Redentor, el Señor de los ejércitos es su nombre, el Santo de Israel.

Our Redeemer, Jehovah of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel. …

5 S iéntate en silencio y entra en las tinieblas, hija de los caldeos, porque nunca más te llamarán soberana de reinos.

Sit silent, and get thee into darkness, daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no more be called, Mistress of kingdoms.

6 E staba enojado contra mi pueblo, profané mi heredad y en tu mano los entregué; no les mostraste compasión, sobre el anciano hiciste muy pesado tu yugo,

I was wroth with my people, I polluted mine inheritance, and gave them into thy hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the aged didst thou very heavily lay thy yoke;

7 y dijiste: “Seré soberana para siempre.” No consideraste esto en tu corazón, ni te acordaste de su resultado.

and thou saidst, I shall be a mistress for ever; so that thou didst not take these things to heart, thou didst not remember the end thereof.

8 A hora pues, oye esto, voluptuosa, tú que moras confiadamente, que dices en tu corazón: “Yo, y nadie más. No me quedaré viuda, ni sabré de pérdida de hijos.”

And now hear this, thou voluptuous one, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thy heart, It is I, and there is none but me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know loss of children:

9 P ero estas dos cosas vendrán de repente sobre ti en un mismo día: pérdida de hijos y viudez. Vendrán sobre ti en toda su plenitud a pesar de tus muchas hechicerías, a pesar del gran poder de tus encantamientos.

yet these two things shall come upon thee in a moment, in one day, loss of children and widowhood; they shall come upon thee in full measure for the multitude of thy sorceries, for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

10 T e sentiste segura en tu maldad y dijiste: “Nadie me ve.” Tu sabiduría y tu conocimiento te han engañado, y dijiste en tu corazón: “Yo, y nadie más.”

For thou hast confided in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath seduced thee; and thou hast said in thy heart, It is I, and there is none but me.

11 P ero un mal vendrá sobre ti que no sabrás conjurar; caerá sobre ti un desastre que no podrás remediar; vendrá de repente sobre ti una destrucción que no conoces.

But evil shall come upon thee—thou shalt not know from whence it riseth; and mischief shall fall upon thee, which thou shalt not be able to ward off; and desolation that thou suspectest not shall come upon thee suddenly.

12 P ermanece ahora en tus encantamientos y en tus muchas hechicerías en las cuales te has ocupado desde tu juventud; tal vez podrás sacar provecho, tal vez causarás temor.

Stand now with thine enchantments and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to turn them to profit, if so be thou mayest cause terror.

13 E stás fatigada por los muchos consejos; que se levanten ahora los que contemplan los cielos, los que profetizan por medio de las estrellas, los que pronostican cada luna nueva, y te salven de lo que vendrá sobre ti.

Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the interpreters of the heavens, the observers of the stars, who predict according to the new moons what shall come upon thee, stand up, and save thee.

14 H e aquí, ellos se han vuelto como rastrojo, el fuego los quema; no librarán sus vidas del poder de la llama. No habrá brasas para calentarse, ni lumbre ante la cual sentarse.

Behold, they shall be as stubble, the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, fire to sit before it.

15 A sí han venido a ser para ti aquellos con quienes has trabajado, que han negociado contigo desde tu juventud; cada cual vaga por su camino, no hay nadie que te salve.

Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, they that trafficked with thee from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his own quarter; there is none to save thee.
