1 Y Abimelec, hijo de Jerobaal, fue a Siquem, a los parientes de su madre, y les habló a ellos y a toda la familia de la casa del padre de su madre, diciendo:

And Abimelech son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother's brethren, and spoke to them, and to all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,

2 H ablad ahora a oídos de todos los habitantes de Siquem: “¿Qué es mejor para vosotros, que todos los hijos de Jerobaal, setenta hombres, reinen sobre vosotros, o que reine sobre vosotros un solo hombre?” Además, acordaos que yo soy hueso vuestro y carne vuestra.

Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the citizens of Shechem, Which is better for you, that seventy persons, all sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or that one man rule over you? And remember that I am your bone and your flesh.

3 Y los parientes de su madre hablaron todas estas palabras por él a oídos de todos los habitantes de Siquem; y ellos se inclinaron a seguir a Abimelec, porque dijeron: Es pariente nuestro.

And his mother's brethren spoke of him in the ears of all the citizens of Shechem all these words. And their heart inclined after Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

4 Y le dieron setenta piezas de plata de la casa de Baal-berit, con las cuales Abimelec tomó a sueldo hombres indignos y temerarios que lo siguieron.

And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-Berith, and Abimelech hired with them vain and wanton men, and they followed him.

5 L uego fue a la casa de su padre en Ofra y mató a sus hermanos, los hijos de Jerobaal, setenta hombres, sobre una piedra. Pero Jotam, el hijo menor de Jerobaal, se libró porque se escondió.

And he came to his father's house, to Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy persons upon one stone; but there remained Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal; for he had hid himself.

6 Y se reunieron todos los habitantes de Siquem y todo Bet-milo, y fueron e hicieron rey a Abimelec, junto a la encina del pilar que había en Siquem.

And all the citizens of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went and made Abimelech king, by the memorial-oak that is in Shechem.

7 C uando se lo informaron a Jotam, fue y se paró en la cumbre del monte Gerizim, y alzando su voz, clamó y les dijo: Escuchadme, habitantes de Siquem, para que os oiga Dios.

And they told it to Jotham, and he went and stood on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said to them, Hearken to me, ye citizens of Shechem, that God may hearken to you.

8 U na vez los árboles fueron a ungir un rey sobre ellos, y dijeron al olivo: “Reina sobre nosotros.”

The trees once went forth to anoint a king over them; and they said to the olive-tree, Reign over us.

9 M as el olivo les respondió: “¿He de dejar mi aceite con el cual se honra a Dios y a los hombres, para ir a ondear sobre los árboles?”

And the olive-tree said to them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to wave over the trees?

10 E ntonces los árboles dijeron a la higuera: “Ven, reina sobre nosotros.”

And the trees said to the fig-tree, Come thou, reign over us.

11 P ero la higuera les respondió: “¿He de dejar mi dulzura y mi buen fruto, para ir a ondear sobre los árboles?”

But the fig-tree said to them, Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave over the trees?

12 D espués los árboles dijeron a la vid: “Ven tú, reina sobre nosotros.”

Then said the trees to the vine, Come thou, reign over us.

13 P ero la vid les respondió: “¿He de dejar mi mosto, que alegra a Dios y a los hombres, para ir a ondear sobre los árboles?”

And the vine said to them, Should I leave my new wine, which cheers God and man, and go to wave over the trees?

14 D ijeron entonces todos los árboles a la zarza: “Ven tú, reina sobre nosotros.”

Then said all the trees to the thorn-bush, Come thou, reign over us.

15 Y la zarza dijo a los árboles: “Si en verdad me ungís por rey sobre vosotros, venid y refugiaos a mi sombra; y si no, salga fuego de la zarza y consuma los cedros del Líbano.”

And the thorn-bush said to the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, come, put confidence in my shadow; but if not, fire shall come out of the thorn-bush and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

16 A hora pues, si habéis procedido con verdad e integridad al hacer rey a Abimelec, y si habéis procedido bien con Jerobaal y su casa, y si habéis procedido con él como él merecía

Now therefore, if ye have dealt truly and sincerely in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and if ye have done to him according to the deserving of his hands;

17 ( pues mi padre peleó por vosotros, y arriesgó su vida y os libró de la mano de Madián,

—for my father fought for you, and endangered his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian;

18 p ero vosotros os habéis rebelado hoy contra la casa de mi padre y habéis matado a sus hijos, setenta hombres, sobre una piedra, y habéis hecho rey sobre los habitantes de Siquem a Abimelec, el hijo de su sierva, porque es vuestro pariente);

but ye are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, seventy men, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his handmaid, king over the citizens of Shechem, because he is your brother;

19 s i habéis, pues, procedido hoy en verdad e integridad para con Jerobaal y su casa, regocijaos en Abimelec, y que él también se regocije en vosotros.

—if ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you;

20 Y si no, salga fuego de Abimelec y consuma a los habitantes de Siquem y de Bet-milo; y salga fuego de los habitantes de Siquem y de Bet-milo y consuma a Abimelec.

but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the citizens of Shechem and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the citizens of Shechem and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

21 E ntonces Jotam escapó y huyó, y se fue a Beer y permaneció allí a causa de su hermano Abimelec. Reinado de Abimelec

And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, because of Abimelech his brother.

22 Y reinó Abimelec tres años sobre Israel.

And Abimelech ruled over Israel three years.

23 P ero Dios envió un espíritu de discordia entre Abimelec y los habitantes de Siquem; y los habitantes de Siquem procedieron pérfidamente con Abimelec,

And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the citizens of Shechem; and the citizens of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech,

24 p ara que viniera la violencia hecha a los setenta hijos de Jerobaal, y recayera la sangre de ellos sobre su hermano Abimelec que los mató, y sobre los habitantes de Siquem que fortalecieron las manos de él para matar a sus hermanos.

that the violence to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and upon the citizens of Shechem, who had strengthened his hands to slay his brethren.

25 Y los habitantes de Siquem pusieron emboscadas contra él en las cumbres de los montes y robaban a todos los que pasaban cerca de ellos por el camino; y se lo hicieron saber a Abimelec.

And the citizens of Shechem set liers in wait for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them. And it was told Abimelech.

26 Y Gaal, hijo de Ebed, vino con sus parientes, y pasaron a Siquem; y los habitantes de Siquem pusieron su confianza en él.

And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem; and the citizens of Shechem put confidence in him.

27 Y salieron al campo y vendimiaron sus viñedos, pisaron las uvas e hicieron fiesta; y entrando a la casa de su dios, comieron y bebieron y maldijeron a Abimelec.

And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode, and made rejoicings, and went into the house of their god, and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.

28 E ntonces Gaal, hijo de Ebed, dijo: ¿Quién es Abimelec y quién es Siquem para que le sirvamos? ¿No es acaso hijo de Jerobaal, y no es Zebul su oficial ? Servid a los hombres de Hamor, padre de Siquem; pero ¿por qué hemos de servirle a él?

And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is he not the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his overseer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem! and why should we serve him?

29 ¡ Quién pusiera este pueblo en mis manos! Entonces yo quitaría a Abimelec. Diría a Abimelec: Aumenta tu ejército, y sal.

Oh! would that this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

30 Y cuando Zebul, gobernante de la ciudad, oyó las palabras de Gaal, hijo de Ebed, se encendió en ira.

And Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, and his anger was kindled;

31 Y envió encubiertamente mensajeros a Abimelec, diciendo: He aquí que Gaal, hijo de Ebed, y sus parientes han venido a Siquem, y he aquí que están incitando a la ciudad contra ti.

and he sent messengers to Abimelech craftily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren are come to Shechem, and behold, they shut up the city against thee;

32 A hora pues, levántate de noche, tú y el pueblo que está contigo, y pon emboscada en el campo.

and now, rise up by night, thou and the people that are with thee, and lie in ambush in the fields.

33 Y sucederá en la mañana, en cuanto salga el sol, que te levantarás temprano y arremeterás contra la ciudad; y he aquí, que cuando él y el pueblo que está con él salga contra ti, harás con ellos lo que te venga a mano.

And it shall be in the morning when the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and fall upon the city; and behold, he and the people that is with him shall come out against thee, and thou shalt do with him as thou shalt find occasion.

34 S e levantó, pues, de noche Abimelec, y todo el pueblo que estaba con él, y pusieron emboscada contra Siquem con cuatro compañías.

And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they lay in ambush against Shechem in four companies.

35 Y Gaal, hijo de Ebed, salió y se paró a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad; y Abimelec y el pueblo que estaba con él salieron de la emboscada.

And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city. Then Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, out of the ambush.

36 A l ver Gaal a la gente, dijo a Zebul: Mira, viene gente bajando de las cumbres de los montes. Pero Zebul le dijo: Estás viendo la sombra de los montes como si fueran hombres.

And Gaal saw the people, and said to Zebul, Behold, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains. And Zebul said to him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as men.

37 Y volvió a hablar Gaal y dijo: He aquí, gente que baja de la parte más alta de la tierra, y una compañía viene por el camino de la encina de los adivinos.

And Gaal spoke again, and said, Behold, people are coming down from the high part of the land, and one company is coming along by the way of the Magician's oak.

38 E ntonces Zebul le dijo: ¿Dónde está ahora tu jactancia con la cual decías: “¿Quién es Abimelec para que le sirvamos?” ¿No es éste el pueblo que despreciabas? Ahora pues, sal y pelea contra él.

Then said Zebul to him, Where is now thy mouth, thou that saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out now, I pray, and fight against them.

39 Y salió Gaal delante de los habitantes de Siquem y peleó contra Abimelec.

And Gaal went out before the citizens of Shechem, and fought against Abimelech.

40 A bimelec lo persiguió pero Gaal huyó delante de él; y muchos cayeron heridos hasta la entrada de la puerta.

And Abimelech pursued him, and he fled before him, and there fell many wounded, as far as the entrance of the gate.

41 Y Abimelec se quedó en Aruma, pero Zebul expulsó a Gaal y a sus parientes para que no se quedaran en Siquem. Captura de Siquem

And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah. And Zebul drove out Gaal and his brethren, that they might not dwell in Shechem.

42 A conteció al día siguiente que el pueblo salió al campo, y se lo hicieron saber a Abimelec.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

43 Y él tomó a su gente, la dividió en tres compañías y puso emboscada en el campo; cuando miró y vio al pueblo salir de la ciudad, se levantó contra ellos y los mató.

And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and lay in ambush in the field. And he looked, and behold, the people came forth out of the city; and he rose up against them and smote them.

44 E ntonces Abimelec y la compañía que estaba con él se lanzaron con ímpetu y se situaron a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, y las otras dos compañías se lanzaron contra todos los que estaban en el campo y los mataron.

And Abimelech, and the companies that were with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city; and two of the companies ran upon all that were in the fields, and slew them.

45 Y peleó Abimelec contra la ciudad todo aquel día, capturó la ciudad y mató a la gente que había en ella; entonces arrasó la ciudad y la sembró de sal.

And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that were in it, and broke down the city, and sowed it with salt.

46 A l oír esto todos los habitantes de la torre de Siquem, se metieron en la fortaleza del templo de El-berit.

And all the men of the tower of Shechem heard, and they entered into the stronghold of the house of the god Berith.

47 Y le dijeron a Abimelec que todos los habitantes de la torre de Siquem estaban reunidos.

And it was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem had gathered together.

48 A bimelec subió entonces al monte Salmón, él y toda la gente que estaba con él; y tomando Abimelec un hacha en su mano, cortó una rama de los árboles, la levantó y la puso sobre su hombro. Y dijo a la gente que estaba con él: Lo que me habéis visto hacer, apresuraos y haced lo mismo.

Then Abimelech went up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up and laid it on his shoulder, and said to the people that was with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, do as I have done.

49 Y todo el pueblo cortó también cada uno su rama y siguió a Abimelec, y las pusieron sobre la fortaleza; prendieron fuego a la fortaleza sobre los que estaban adentro, y murieron también todos los de la torre de Siquem, como mil hombres y mujeres. Muerte de Abimelec

And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and they followed Abimelech, and put to the hold, and burned the hold with fire upon them. And all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

50 D espués Abimelec fue a Tebes, la sitió y la tomó.

And Abimelech went to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.

51 P ero había una torre fortificada en el centro de la ciudad, y todos los hombres y mujeres, todos los habitantes de la ciudad, huyeron allí, se encerraron y subieron al techo de la torre.

But there was a strong tower in the midst of the city, and thither fled all the men and women, all the citizens of the city; and they shut it behind them, and went up to the roof of the tower.

52 Y Abimelec vino a la torre, la atacó y se acercó a la entrada de la torre para prenderle fuego.

And Abimelech came to the tower, and fought against it, and he drew near to the entrance of the tower to burn it with fire;

53 P ero una mujer arrojó una muela de molino sobre la cabeza de Abimelec rompiéndole el cráneo.

and a woman cast the upper stone of a handmill on Abimelech's head, and crushed his skull.

54 E ntonces él llamó apresuradamente al muchacho que era su escudero, y le dijo: Saca tu espada y mátame, no sea que se diga de mí: “Una mujer lo mató.” Y el muchacho lo traspasó, y murió.

Then he called hastily to the young man that carried his armour, and said to him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that they say not of me, A woman killed him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

55 C uando los hombres de Israel vieron que Abimelec había muerto, cada cual partió para su casa.

And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they went every man to his place.

56 A sí pagó Dios a Abimelec por la maldad que había hecho a su padre al matar a sus setenta hermanos.

And God rendered back the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did to his father in slaying his seventy brethren.

57 D ios también hizo volver sobre sus cabezas toda la maldad de los hombres de Siquem, y vino sobre ellos la maldición de Jotam, hijo de Jerobaal.

And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render back upon their heads; and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
