1 N O te jactes del día de mañana; Porque no sabes qué dará de sí el día.

Boast not thyself of to-morrow, For thou knowest not what a day bringeth forth.

2 A lábete el extraño, y no tu boca; El ajeno, y no tus labios.

Let another praise thee, and not thine own mouth, A stranger, and not thine own lips.

3 P esada es la piedra, y la arena pesa; Mas la ira del necio es más pesada que ambas cosas.

A stone heavy, and the sand heavy, And the anger of a fool Is heavier than they both.

4 C ruel es la ira, é impetuoso el furor; Mas ¿quién parará delante de la envidia?

Fury fierce, and anger overflowing, And who standeth before jealousy?

5 M ejor es reprensión manifiesta Que amor oculto.

Better open reproof than hidden love.

6 F ieles son las heridas del que ama; Pero importunos los besos del que aborrece.

Faithful are the wounds of a lover, And abundant the kisses of an enemy.

7 E l alma harta huella el panal de miel; Mas al alma hambrienta todo lo amargo es dulce.

A satiated soul treadeth down a honeycomb, And a hungry soul every bitter thing sweet.

8 C ual ave que se va de su nido, Tal es el hombre que se va de su lugar.

As a bird wandering from her nest, So a man wandering from his place.

9 E l ungüento y el perfume alegran el corazón: Y el amigo al hombre con el cordial consejo.

Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart, And the sweetness of one's friend -- from counsel of the soul.

10 N o dejes á tu amigo, ni al amigo de tu padre; Ni entres en casa de tu hermano el día de tu aflicción. Mejor es el vecino cerca que el hermano lejano.

Thine own friend, and the friend of thy father, forsake not, And the house of thy brother enter not In a day of thy calamity, Better a near neighbour than a brother afar off.

11 S é sabio, hijo mío, y alegra mi corazón, Y tendré qué responder al que me deshonrare.

Be wise, my son, and rejoice my heart. And I return my reproacher a word.

12 E l avisado ve el mal, y escóndese, Mas los simples pasan, y llevan el daño.

The prudent hath seen the evil, he is hidden, The simple have passed on, they are punished.

13 Q uítale su ropa al que fió al extraño; Y al que fió á la extraña, tómale prenda.

Take his garment, when a stranger hath been surety, And for a strange woman pledge it.

14 E l que bendice á su amigo en alta voz, madrugando de mañana, Por maldición se le contará.

Whoso is saluting his friend with a loud voice, In the morning rising early, A light thing it is reckoned to him.

15 G otera continua en tiempo de lluvia, Y la mujer rencillosa, son semejantes:

A continual dropping in a day of rain, And a woman of contentions are alike,

16 E l que pretende contenerla, arresta el viento: O el aceite en su mano derecha.

Whoso is hiding her hath hidden the wind, And the ointment of his right hand calleth out.

17 H ierro con hierro se aguza; Y el hombre aguza el rostro de su amigo.

Iron by iron is sharpened, And a man sharpens the face of his friend.

18 E l que guarda la higuera, comerá su fruto; Y el que guarda á su señor, será honrado.

The keeper of a fig-tree eateth its fruit, And the preserver of his master is honoured.

19 C omo un agua se parece á otra, Así el corazón del hombre al otro.

As water the face to face, So the heart of man to man.

20 E l sepulcro y la perdición nunca se hartan: Así los ojos del hombre nunca están satisfechos.

Sheol and destruction are not satisfied, And the eyes of man are not satisfied.

21 E l crisol prueba la plata, y la hornaza el oro: Y al hombre la boca del que lo alaba.

A refining pot for silver, and a furnace for gold, And a man according to his praise.

22 A unque majes al necio en un mortero entre granos de trigo á pisón majados, No se quitará de él su necedad.

If thou dost beat the foolish in a mortar, Among washed things -- with a pestle, His folly turneth not aside from off him.

23 C onsidera atentamente el aspecto de tus ovejas; Pon tu corazón á tus rebaños:

Know well the face of thy flock, Set thy heart to the droves,

24 P orque las riquezas no son para siempre; ¿Y será la corona para perpetuas generaciones?

For riches not to the age, Nor a crown to generation and generation.

25 S aldrá la grama, aparecerá la hierba, Y segaránse las hierbas de los montes.

Revealed was the hay, and seen the tender grass, And gathered the herbs of mountains.

26 L os corderos para tus vestidos, Y los cabritos para el precio del campo:

Lambs for thy clothing, And the price of the field he-goats,

27 Y abundancia de leche de las cabras para tu mantenimiento, y para mantenimiento de tu casa, Y para sustento de tus criadas.

And a sufficiency of goats' milk for thy bread, For bread to thy house, and life to thy damsels!
